hey Fairy how many smoothies should I have per day? like one or two? I would like to know how much is just right a daythank you
I would shoot for 2 large handfuls of greens a day - however many smoothies that takes for you - until your skin clears, and then you can go down to one a day if you'd like and see if that's enough to maintain your results. Good luck! 🙂
I was browsing Borders today and I looked through the Eat Right for your Type book on diets for blood types, and as type A I should avoid bananas and mangoes (((
Didn't stop me from using a banana in my smoothie though. Had my first one today! w/ a scoop of MSM.
I personally hate the frozen berries, I can taste the freezer burn, blech. >
hey guys, i was reading up on broccoli sprouts and i realise its very nutritional. so i went to a nearby supermarket and found this item on sale: "broccoli and alfalfa sprouts". beside it was another item called "alfalfa sprouts". they looked exactly similar! but broccoli and alfalafa sprouts costly slightly more den the latter.. whats all of yall's take on that? do broccoli sprouts and alfalfa sprouts look alike? i read alfalfa sprouts although nutritious but it isnt as good as broccoli sprouts..
Panda1,
Thanks for alerting everyone about what great deals they have at Costco! So happy you found that. I love pre-washed spinach too. It's so nice to just open the bin and grab a big handful!
junebug1991,
Had the frozen berries been frozen for a long time? I hate freezer burn tasting foods as well, and I've never tasted that with my frozen berries.
Here's an article that discusses metabolic types, which can also apply to blood types: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/diet-...stionnaire.html
bluks,
I love sprouts! Broccoli sprouts are great, but alfalfa sprouts have a bad reputation. I don't remember why exactly, but I'm sure a google search would pull it up.

Now YOU are giving alfalfa sprouts a bad name! There have been cases of salmonella contamination and illness associated with alfalfa sprouts...however, salmonella can be transmitted by MANY things including any and all types of sprouts. The only reason you have heard the bad stories about alfalfa sprouts is because it is the most common and popular sprout! If broccoli sprouts start selling wildly across the country, you'll hear of salmonella stories with that too.
And either way, you are much much more likely to get salmonella from raw meat, eggs or your pet feces than from any vegetable. Here is info from the CDC about salmonella:
Salmonella live in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals, including birds. Salmonella are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Contaminated foods usually look and smell normal. Contaminated foods are often of animal origin, such as beef, poultry, milk, or eggs, but all foods, including vegetables may become contaminated. Many raw foods of animal origin are frequently contaminated, but fortunately, thorough cooking kills Salmonella. Food may also become contaminated by the unwashed hands of an infected food handler, who forgot to wash his or her hands with soap after using the bathroom.
I get very sensitive about this topic because people act like my lizard is a walking sack of salmonella even tho she only goes to the bathroom in a special bathtub and gets washed afterwards. She is cleaner than most dogs or cats! 🙂
Lutya,
Alfalfa sprouts have had a bad reputation long before I came along.... haha And, I really didn't mean to indirectly insult your pet lizard by my statement about them. I never knew that a salmonella risk was associated with lizards. Not that it matters, one should always wash their hands after petting animals or reptiles anyway, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov).
There was a salmonella outbreak associated with alfalfa sprouts, but that was *not* what I was thinking of, as that was several years ago. I knew there was something not good about them in general.... I looked it up, and alfalfa sprouts have a toxin called canavanine that can harm the immune system. For years, I have heard to avoid them. Here's a link that discusses it: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA202343

oh my, you're right. i shall not buy anymore alfalfa sprouts. although they are nutritional, L. canavanine post a risk that i wouldnt want to take. thanks for the info fairy!
Hello fairy!
Thanks for your wonderfull thread. I've been doing the green smoothie thing with 2 handfulls organic spring mix every morning for about 2 months now with decent results on my skin.
One unforeseen effect it's had is my weight loss. I wasn't fat by any means (34 waist), but I can't fit into 75% of my jeans now because they are simply too baggy. Probably a 32 now and much more lean.
Thanks again!
I hear you on the weight thing. I am abou 5'9" i guess, not totally sure and about 150 right now. I use to be about 170 kinda built...wish i was 180 built but we all know how that goes. All this cutting back on the bad crap is gonna but a dent in my weight cause i can eat a ton and never gain weight really. Gotta find way to put weight on.
bluks,
You are very welcome!
GoBills,
Thanks for posting, and I'm happy to hear that you are doing so well with the smoothies! Adding nuts/seeds to your smoothies would help to make them more calorically dense, and eating foods like beans, grains and starchy vegetables would help as well.
Panda1,
Good for you Panda!! I have never juiced wheatgrass (but think it would be great to do!!) and don't know much about it, but I've heard from friends in the know that you do need a special juicer. Something about it having to do with the texture of wheatgrass? If you haven't yet checked out this site, you might find it helpful: http://www.living-foods.com/marketplace/wheatgrass.html . I got my Green Star from them. If you don't have a regular juicer, you might consider investing in one of the juicers listed at the above site that can juice "both" wheat grass and regular vegetables.
I drink smoothies that are look like this
12 oz almond milk
2 tablespoons young barley grass
1 serving olive oil
brown rice protein
half cup of rasberries
half cup of strawberries
I can add some more greens to it. Never thought of it though. Never even knew about the green smoothies things.
Panda1,
How cool that it does fruits and veggies too! Juicing something like carrots would definitely give your arms a workout!!! haha I'm excited for you too!! Let us know how it all goes!
lul,
If you add some greens, you might want to add in some sweet fruits, like apples or pears. Hope it works out for you!
I Love this idea =) I don't think my smoothie is quite kosher though, because I used a fruit juice instead of water... but its an organic not-from-concentrate 100% fruit one, so it can't be thaat bad. Though my smoothie is very very sweet... tastes identical to what i'd usually get from lovejuice or boostbars though. It has a large handful of baby spinach in. The main ingredient is mango which explains the sweetness.
LisaLil,
Your smoothie sounds delicious! It's okay to do fruit juice, except that fruit juices can aggravate acne due to their high sugar concentrations. If that's what it takes to get in your greens though, then I'd continue - perhaps you could use a little less juice though?
I read somewhere that the blood type diet has alot of flaws. I just skimmed it, but still. And you gotta look at it like this, i searched online and there is only one guy that has even written about this really. Im not totally convinced.
Indeed, I mean, I've been eating bananas and some "forbidden" things all my life and I've still got a head, two arms, and two legs. Nothing went wrong there.
I must say, the quality of my skin has changed dramatically. (I am drinking these with a scoop and a half of MSM powder). I can put on makeup more easily and I just look healthier and brighter in general.
P.S. For the other person who has spilled their smoothie on their rug/drapes I'd really like to know how to remove those stains...
^ I just used regular hand soap to get the green stain out of my drapes. I cleaned it as soon as it happened too. Took my drapes down, drenched them in water with soap, scrubbed and rinsed. With my carpet, I have a vacuum that can suck up water, so I first got as much off the carpet as I could with a paper towel. I then drenched the carpet in water, vacuumed it up, drenched it again, rubbed in it, vacuumed it up and finished off with a small amount of soap. You can't even tell it happened.
Hey again thought I'd chip in with how my experience is going. Cut down the fruit juices, added more baby spinach... tastes a lot less sweet now much more enjoyable. I shall def continue for 6 weeks =)
I think the most important thing with them is to make sure that the blender/smoothie maker gets rinsed out straight after using it hehe.
LisaLil,
Great to hear from you! I'm really glad the smoothies are going well and that you're going to stick with it for 6 weeks! Yea!!
LOL about your blender comment!! You might be right - I would imagine not rinsing it out right away would make for quite a clean up job later!! haha I just emphasized this more under the first post.
Panda,
I know what you mean about the spinach!! I barely get any juice from spinach either - even with my Green Star!
I think the wheatgrass along with the smoothies is a great idea for sure!
With the DIM, maybe you could try it every other day and see how that does? And then start skipping 2 days, and so on, until you determine how much of it is needed? Remember too that DIM occurs naturally in cruciferous veggies like kale, collars, bok choy, cabbage, etc.
Anyway, I'm excited to hear how things progress for you!! I'm looking forward to hearing about your growing wheatgrass too - that's going to be so cool!
Hey Panda!!
That is sooooo great!!! I love hearing about your wheatgrass and all the benefits you'll be receiving from it. Gardening and being outside in the sun is definitely therapeutic! I love tending to my plants, watering them, etc.
SO cool that you figured out you'll yield more juice with the circular trays! I will definitely keep that in mind if I buy them at some point.
Looking forward to hearing how it goes. I'm so happy you're having so much fun with this! Thanks for keeping us informed!
