Haha I was reading this thread the other day and so today after work I went to the grocery store and unloaded on some fruits and vegetables. My basket weighed like a millioin pounds but all that food rang up as only twleve dollars. I was like oh my god....healthy food is cheap.
So I went home...threw that stuff in the blender and let it rip. Haha it was a good first test. Even though at times it was like I was eating grass....my blender sucks. I'm hoping this makes me healthier...!
Thanks!
nfallin00,
Thanks for your upbeat post! It made me laugh, haha.
Glad you got such a great deal on all your fruits and veggies! haha
Since your smoothie tastes like grass, I'd recommend doing a much higher ratio of fruits to greens at this point. Baby spinach is perfect to start with, because it's very mild in flavor. Once you get used to it a bit, then you can work your way up toward more greens. Sweet tasting fruits like apples, pears, bananas, peaches, etc all do a great job of balancing out the green flavor.
If you run into any problems, let us know so we can help!

Hah well thank you...I actually just made another one this morning. I didn't buy spinach but I bought other things so I threw some celery and parsley in with bananas and dripped a little bit of honey in there with a dash of vanilla extract (haha I thought it might make it taste good). And it was actually pretty good. I'm feeling good about this.
^ Dr. Fuhrman recommends greens for everyone on a daily basis - and especially for those with acne! Here are some articles about greens from Dr. Fuhrman's blog: http://www.google.com/search?q=greens+site...amp;rlz=1I7SNCA
I've never imagined the juice of green leaves and fruits could be this tasty! Thanks!
You are very welcome! So glad you like it, and thanks for your post! 🙂
What would be the most cost-effective way to go about doing this? I am a college student with a mediocre blender.
I would be on the lookout for whatever fruits happen to be on sale. If you find frozen fruit on sale, stock up on those if there's room. Sometimes you can get a better deal if you buy fruit packaged in greater quantities, like apples, which you can often find bagged. For leafy greens, I would opt for the kind that you need to wash yourself, as the pre-packaged can be a bit pricier - keep a lookout for whatever greens are best priced. If you're a member of Costco, they often have great deals on greens, fruit and frozen fruit. Anyone else have any ideas? Good luck! 🙂
I've heard it's not good to use spinach every day as your greens. Is there any truth to this?
I don't think it would hurt, but it's really best to use an assortment of greens so that you get a bigger variety of nutrients. 🙂
Hey ABG Fairy, thank you soooooooooo much for starting this thread and keeping it going for so long! I've been doing the green smoothies for a little over a week, and two days in I noticed a remarkable improvement in my skin. I haven't completely stopped breaking out (damn hormones!) but the overall condition of my skin is nice again, making it much easier to hide the few breakouts I do still get. Also my eyes are clearer and my puffy dark circles have virtually disappeared. I think I must be going through a detox phase because these last few days I've been feeling pretty rough no matter what, but for the first two or three days every time I drank a smoothie it gave me this wonderful energy boost. I'm looking forward to feeling like that all the time! Seeing the difference this has made has convinced me to go raw.
I do have a question about one of your smoothie recipes:
Sinfully Chocolate Smoothie:
1 banana
1 cup frozen mango
½ cup frozen raspberries
1 handful spring mix
2-3 cups water
2 tbs cocoa powder
I have been trying to get my dad to start drinking green smoothies... and hopefully to eventually go raw. He's terminally ill (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) but not to the point where he's symptomatic. So he's got a couple years, hopefully, but I think that he could significantly extend his lifetime and improve the quality of it with an immune system boosting diet of raw foods and green smoothies. But he just says "Gross!" So I was wondering if that recipe might work to trick him into drinking a smoothie. Does it taste just like a chocolate shake? I don't have frozen raspberries at the moment and would prefer not to cover up the lovely taste of mangos with cocoa powder- would it work just as well with two bananas?
I can't believe I'm having to trick my dad into eating greens like a little kid.
I'd like to remind everyone that while green smoothies are delicious and good for you, they are NOT good for your carpet, clothes, bedlinens or draperies. Keep a tight lid on your smoothie if you set it down for a few minutes, especially if you have animals, small children, coworkers who behave like animals or small children... or if you are just clumsy, like me.
Hi Jen and Tonic!
Thank you so much for all your kind words, and I am SO happy to hear how well you are doing with the smoothies!! People like you are the reason I started this thread. It's so great to be able to share this information with others.
I am so sorry to hear about your dad - what a horrible thing. If he's just in the beginning stages though, there is certainly hope. I will send you a PM later when I have more time with some information that you might find helpful.
For the smoothie recipe, it's fine to leave out the cocoa, but you'll need either raspberries, blueberries or strawberries to "disguise" the color of the greens. I used to make green smoothies for my brother without him knowing they had any greens by using these berries, hehe. I would just tell him I made him a smoothie, and he thought they were delicious! LOL!! Had he known there were any greens, he would have refused them, as he's just like your dad in thinking they sound gross.... even though he's seen with his very eyes how they've changed my skin!! haha I usually used a small handful of spinach in my brother's, as spinach is so mild in flavor.
You are right in that smoothies don't like drapes, carpet, etc.!! haha I had a spill once.... sat my smoothie down on a coaster, not knowing that it had a small, clear digital camera battery cap on it... so I sat it down, let go, and to my horror, out of the corner of my eye, I saw my smoothie tilt and spill all over the place!! Luckily, it didn't have any dark berries in it, and it came up beautifully with soap and water.... phew!!
Quick question. I want to try this for the 12 weeks and so I don't get discouraged from complexity, I want to keep it simple.
I should have about 8 cups everyday. And are there certain ratios of fruit to veggie? Or is that more for the flavor part of it? Spinach is easiest for me to get so can I just get a cup of spinach and add any fruit until it gives me the desired taste? Is that good?

I've tried frozen raspberries and found they didn't really cover up the color enough- in fact they sometimes made it a gross purpley green. I find the bright green color That's why I was thinking coca powder is a brilliant idea... I just didn't want to waste nicer fruits like mango by covering them up with cocoa powder... we tend to battle over mangoes in this family! And I know raspberry goes amazingly with chocolate so I definitely will pick some up again first chance I get. Come to think of it, I used to like frozen chocolate covered bananas so I bet a banana-greens-cocoa smoothie would be tasty. If this is chocolately enough it may help with my occasional cravings and I might even try feeding it to my family for "dessert."
I made a banana strawberrie with some nes quik mix this morning. Didnt add to much quik cause i tasted it and it would take way to much to really get taste. But it was still a good smoothie for just throwing crap in there.
haha, sounds tasty - maybe next time you can throw some greens in there! 🙂

So happy to hear you want to give the smoothies a 12 week try! 🙂
Though it's important to eat fruit everyday, their main purpose in the green smoothies is to cover up the taste of the greens, so yes, just use however much you need. Most people do 60% fruit to 40% greens.
Spinach is a cruciferous veggie and incredibly high in nutrients, so it would be great to start with. With time, you can vary up your greens. For the first 6 weeks - or 12 if you don't yet see improvements after 6, I'd use 2 handfuls of spinach a day - about 2 cups. Good luck!

I guess it depends on what greens you use. The ones I made for my brother were usually a light to medium shade of pink, but I only used a small handful of spinach in his. For your dad, I would try using less greens, because otherwise, it's hard to fully cover up the color of the greens.
I have made banana-chocolate green smoothies before, and they are delicious, so definitely give it a go! And yes, I've had them for dessert before too, hehe. 🙂
Just havent got to store yet. What other things besides spinach again? Preferably something i can just get a walmart or something. In others words common.
While im on here and i dont wanna start another thread cause its cluttered as it is, i have few more questions.
When looking for tortillas do you guys think just wheat tortillas are fine. Ham? Is that a low GI food and eggs. If im not allergic i should be fine with 2 scrambled eggs right? im talking maybe every day or otherday

The first post has info on greens, but you should easily be able to find spring mix, romaine and maybe even some kale or collard greens at Walmart. Let me know how you like your first green smoothie! 🙂
Whole wheat tortillas are fine as long as you aren't sensitive to wheat or gluten. Seek out Food for Life's sprouted whole wheat tortillas if you can! Eggs are fine as well. As or ham... I'm not a fan. haha Pigs are scavengers and have toxins in their meat - I'd opt for turkey instead, as it's an excellent and clean source of animal protein. If you can get free farmed turkey, that's even better. Steer clear of any "deli" meats, as those as they are often full of nitrates.

I know exactly how your feel about the mangoes! I'm the same way. I love mangoes way too much to mix them up with something else; I want to enjoy their unique taste! Anyway, if you like raspberries, but they don't conceal the green color, try blackberries!!! Works every time for me; it turns the smoothie kind of pink/purple. But chocolate does the job too, especially if you want to make it look decadent for your family to drink. I don't know how you feel about sugar (I don't use it in my smoothies 'cause they don't need 'em, but I am not against sugar), but you might try some natural, unbleached sugars to make the smoothies an extra sweet treat for your dad to enjoy while he drinks all those antioxidants from the fruits! It's a win-win, really.
