green smoothie sounds like a great idea! i shall try it out soon..

any loyal supporters of green smoothie can give suggestions on what greens to use?

so far from what i read.. spinach seems to be the top pick.. sadly broccoli isnt..

do you think its wise to take a green smoothie first thing in the morning.. like 1 hour b4 breakfast? do yall think we would get a stomach upset or something? i read we should eat something light after waking, prefably with lots of fibre like fruits, because at that moment our body is in the process of detoxification. a heavy breakfast isnt such a good idea.

oh and i read lettuce has very little nutrients and fiber in them.. why is it included in so many of your recipes? isnt cabbage a better substitute? its much higher in fibre and calcium!

oh and i wonder how much does one serving of greens look like.. a handful?

please give a reply to my queries! im so eager to try out the green smoothie!

Hey there

the greens I use are spinach, kale, lambs lettuce, coriander, parsley, mint, watercress. I just grab a bit of each of them and stick them in.

I did do smoothies for breakfast and one in the evening but was starting to find them heavy on my digestion. Now I have a green juice for breakfast (all the nutrients but no fibre) and a smoothie early on in the evening so as I don't get too full late on at night.

They truly are wonderful things...

The greens you researched are great! Kale and collards have the highest nutrition. Here is a list that gives the nutrient values of different foods: http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article17.aspx

My favorite greens to use are baby spinach, spring mix, baby romaine, kale and collards. Of course, there are many more as well that you can use!

It's fine to do broccoli if you want! Just be sure to throw some leafy greens in as well. Take a look at the recipe for the veggie based smoothie under the first post - you might like that one best since you're wanting to do broccoli.

Doing a smoothie for breakfast is perfect! I always do a smoothie for breakfast. It's a great way to start your day!

The lettuce you are referring to would be iceberg lettuce, which has much less nutrition compared to other leafy greens. Go for the dark green leafy greens. 🙂

Try doing at least one handful a day. You don't need to measure - just grab a good handful. Start out with a small one and then work your way up to a big handful - or two! 🙂

I'm glad that you're so interested in the smoothies! Let us know how it goes! 🙂

first time i actually made my own green smoothie ^^. kinda simple.. jst 1 apple, handful of grapes, handful of spinach, and approx 200ml of water. now its in my stomach.. wonder how its doing XD.

im a little worried about consuming raw spinach though.. isnt there a risk of taking a huge colony of bad bacteria(if organically cultured) / unhealthy amt of pesticides (if inorganically cultured)? my parents are nagging at me over that even though i insist washing thoroughly is safe..

oh well lets see how it goes..

thanks for the prompt replies! the supermarket near my house doesnt have collards or kale to my disappointment.. only spinach and lots of chinese-named greens.. wikipedia doesnt have any detailed descriptions of those chinese vegs.. probably i should jst pick any dark green leafy vegs..

anybody done research on recommended green smoothie recipes for people with weak digestion? im abit concern that i might be one of the victims..

oh and i have moderate to serious facial acne =\ been troubling me for like 4 years since i was 14 hmmmph. i tried antibiotics.. herbs.. vit ABCE in tablet form, ACV, all doesnt work at all. guess im jst gnna give in to nature and take lots of fruits and vege and probiotics as the last resort. after all.. health triumphs over whats on the surface =D

cheers to green smoothies! if it doesnt give me stomach upset....

Congrats on making your first smoothie!! =D Don't worry about the spinach - unless you here on the news to of course, haha. 🙂 Thoroughly washing with water is what the Centers for Disease Control recommend. Here are some questions/answers about spinach: http://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2006/september/qa.htm . Some people soak their produce in a water/bleach solution and then rinse before eating. I just rinse mine with water. 🙂 I'm not sure if spinach is a high pesticide food or not - I buy organic containers of it. Some greens, like kale, aren't high in pesticides, and I'll often buy those conventionally grown.

I hope the greens will help you! Are you also getting good oils, like fish oil?

^ Good - omega 3's are very important for good health. Maybe taking those along with doing the greens will be the winning combo for you - I hope so! :)

I drink it first thing in the morning on its own. If you can do that, great, if not, just drink it at whatever time works for you during the day. As long as you get your greens in at some point, you should be fine. 🙂

I drink 4-6 cups a day, but 4 cups is all I need for maintenance... or at least 1 big handful of greens a day.

Lots of people have posted positive results with their skin from drinking the smoothies, and usually, (and I suspect that only a small minority of people who receive positive results actually post) in cases like these, it's normally the people struggling who stick around and post. If you really want to do know if they'll work for you, I'd recommend doing 2 large handfuls a day (about 8 cups of smoothie) for "at least" 6 weeks and see if you notice any improvement. Also, I'd cut down on sugar, starches and animal products as well and try to eat more vegetables. 🙂 You might want to read over the first post again, and take note of Dr. Fuhrman's quote on how helpful leafy greens are for skin problems.

oh.. =D i barely consume stuff that are high in sugar.. been off icecream and sweets for SOOOO long. choc are still addictive =p but i take it like once a week.. so should be alright..

i dont drink coffee too. brown rice and wholemeal bread feels most of my carbohydrate intake.. but to reduce animal products... not quite possible =D im doing weight training! although i have the protein shake to supplement my protein requirement..

i take 2.5 cups(approx 625ml of which 175ml is water) in the morning b4 my breakfast.. and 2.5 cups in the afternoon.

and each time i take the 2.5cups, it makes me really full! =D so i find it quite impossible to take green smoothies with a proper meal..

im sure i'll lose weight if it goes on like this.. but im already so skinny! hahaha. i think drinking green smoothie would be a great idea for people out there who would like to lose a couple of pounds!

to prevent losing weight i suppose would be to increase my calories intake in my proper meals..

taking green smoothie makes me feel healthy =D ive nvr taken so much vege my whole life! now 1 300-500g packet only last 1 - 2 days haha! and im the only one in my family consuming!

my green smoothie includes apples/banana most of the time because they are cheap. i read raspberries are one of the most nutritious berries but they cost quite alot..

anyway you seem to be the replying very frequently.. its great! we should keep this topic alive =D

=.= green smoothies make my poop dark, soft, framented and smelly...

which from what i read isnt healthy at all!

healthy poops are light brown, stays together in one large lump and doesnt stain the toilet bowl when come in contact.

hopefully this is only temporary and those unhealthy poops are just a sign of those old poops that stayed in my colon being expelled.. =\

im currently on the 5th day of green smoothies. i think im gonna add in berries so i do not get sick of apples, grapes and banana. some of the greens can be realli disgusting =D!

-i have approximately 20-30 pimples of small to moderate sizes all over my face, mostly concentrated along and above the jawline(below the cheek bones) and around the mouth.

-5 days ago my skin was more inflammed and had many pus forming because i totally stopped my usual toner, moisturiser, and spot correction gel. they cost alot and i have decided to use a natural approach.

-now the old pimples are healing and shinking at a faster then usual rate. even though those big ones have merely turn into slightly flatter brown red spots. probably need more time for them to fade away.

-much lesser formation of pus too, probably because my skin is starting to cope with the absence of moisuriser and spot targeting gel. alternatively it could be due to the green smoothies working.

-overall, my skin feels much less painful as compared to 5 days ago and my skin doesnt feel tight and dry right after i wash with an ordinary tea tree oil facial wash. my skin seem to be coping well on its own now. over the 5 days, only 3 new pimples form. the rest are all old ones.

the topical treatment i had really helped alot but i think its useless depending on them. it only treat whats on the surface and none beneath. when i was on the topical treatment, i only had 7-10 pimples the most. with 30 mins running 3 times a week, it usually range betwen 3-5 small ones. amazing huh. but now im glad i got over the fear of going sch wif a whole face filled wif acne.

i shall give more updates regarding my skin's condition in the next few days. (=

^ I am glad that you seem to be doing so well! :) As for the digestive issues, just continue with the smoothies and see how you do - they should help with all of that. :)

For weight training, you can actually get a lot of protein from plant foods. All plant foods have protein (in fact, green veggies are 50% protein!), but beans/legumes and nuts/seeds are especially high. Sunflower seeds are cheap and are a great source of protein for weight lifters. Of animal sources, I would recommend eggs, but no more than about 7 a week. Here is a great article on protein: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/hurtf...nd-powders.html

If you're concerned about losing weight with the smoothies, you could add some nuts or seeds to your smoothie, but no more than one ounce per meal.

Love reading your updates of how you're doing! :) I'm really hoping you keep seeing good results, and I think you will. Since much of your acne is along the jawline, that is usually related to hormones, and the greens will help to balance out your hormones. :)

Great idea to add berries to your smoothies!! You might enjoy adding cocoa as well. Do you have access to parsley? If you're not liking the taste of greens, you might really enjoy adding some parsley to your smoothies along with some lemon, as they really give a fresh taste and are delicious! The veggie based smoothie recipe on the first post contains parsley. :)

What do you lot do with the remaining smoothie after you have made it? I usually put it in bottles (like coke bottles) and leave it in the fringe. But it just goes all horrible, lumpyish and sticks to the sides of the bottles. Any recommendations on what to do with it?

as for me i usually just make 1 serving of the green smoothie and drink it immediately.

one serving = 1 big handful of greens + 1 apple + another random fruit + 150-200ml water.

i end up with approx 700ml green smoothie. i take it on empty stomach or in between meals when i dont feel full. so 700ml usually dont make me too full.

for the next serving ill just make a new batch of green smoothie and finish it right away.

that i suppose would be the best method to have your daily intake of green smoothie.

however if you are making a day's worth of green smoothie.. i suppose one way could be:

keep the initial amount of water content low. which means when you make your smoothie, add sufficient water to blend it but not too much to dilute it. keep it in a container preferably sealed and place in the fridge, like you did. (make sure you let the bottle be filled to the brim as much as possible because the smoothie if exposed to any amount of air can lose its nutrients through oxidation or something.) when you want to consume another serving, just pour out a portion and add water to make it less 'lumpyish'. as for those sticking to the side of the bottle.. for the last portion of smoothie, add water directly in and shake it =D

sounds dumb but i cant think of any alternatives... hope this helps! (=

Bluks gave some great ideas for this. I often drink mine down all at once too, but sometimes, I do store some in the fridge for later that day or the next day. I store mine in a regular glass, put a saucer on top, and stick it in the fridge. When I drink it later, I just stir it up first. After I drink it, if I immediately rinse the glass, then it doesn't stick to the sides. Do you think this might work for you?

to abj fairy:

another query regarding parsley that you add to your green smoothie.

how much do you use? parsley is a herb so i think it shouldnt be consume in too large a dose..

and i read it is anti-microbial.. does it kill the probiotics too? hmmm

there are alot of sources out there that criticises anti-biotics for killing both good and bad bacteria.. however i cant find any that raise the issue regarding natural food that possess anti-fungal, anti-microbes capable of doing the same thing as anti-biotics. if so.. i wouldnt want to take parsley.. =\

Bluks,

I rotate my greens all the time, so I don't worry about getting too much of one green. I know that parsley is one of the most nutritious greens out there. As for the other stuff about parsley, I wouldn't be able to answer your questions without doing research, but here's a link that might help: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=f...ce&dbid=100 If you find out, let us know! :)

2nd week on green smoothies.

6-7 cups of 250ml each cup daily. (2+ handful of green leafy, 2 apples + random greens and random fruits)

compared to last week in terms of facial skin: generally the same.

the week b4 starting green smoothie(before 11 jan 2008): 20+ pimples, very inflamed 75/100 with as much as 15 pus forming periodically, pimples ranging from small to big spread throughout the jawline and below the cheek.very oily. rate of healing 20/100.

1 week after starting green smoothie(18 jan 2008): 20+ pimples (only 3 new with disappearance of several old ones), moderately inflamed 50/100, pimple shunk significantly and healing faster then usual + bigger acne flatten and turn light brown with as much as 4 pus forming periodically. still spread throughout jawline and below cheek. still very oily. rate of healing: 55/100

2 weeks after starting green smoothie(26th jan 2008): 20+ pimples (4 new with disappearance of several old ones), moderately inflamed 50/100, healing as fast as last week, no significant change with reference to lst week. as much as 4 pus forming periodically. still very oily. rate of healing: 55/100

external factors that could have caused change in no. of pimples forming:

* week 2: exam and other issue related stress.

* week 2: addition of daily intake of kombucha (a fermented tea by friendly yeast and bacteria that helps detox - 1 days after consuming suddenly increase in pimples. slowed down after the 3rd day and back to the constant healing rate 55/100)

**note that the scores ?/100 given are only an approximate gauge of how well/bad the aspect is doing. the higher the score the larger the extent.

in terms of inflammation: 100/100 = whole face red. 50/100 = half of the face red. 0/100 = skin not red at all.

in terms of healing rate: 100/100 = no new pimples forming, old pimples are disappearing. 50/100= no additional pimple count, new pimples forming = old pimples disappearing.

0/100 = little or no signs of healing, new pimple forming continuously.

=D this seems quite fun! and yeah i know 20+ pimples place my skin in the moderate - serious acne. after 6 weeks i will give a judegement of how well green smoothie therapy works for me and also give recommendations if necessary. (= wish my luck! however a very high chance i will stick to it for overall health! furthermore, i dont feel as tired as i used to be when im in sch having lectures. now i barely doze off!

You are such a fun green smoothie tester! Thanks for posting your results! =D I am so glad that your skin seems to be improving as well!! And how great that you're feeling better too! :) I really hope you end up with the results you're hoping for, but if not, maybe we can fine tune your diet a bit. Hi ABG Fairy

I left you a post in another column but I'll leave one here.

I've started green smoothies last week (yum) half pear , half banana, frozen mango1/4 cup, and handful of spinach, handful of romaine.

My question is how else should I mix it up ? and yes a shopping list, and how do you make any kind of sweet?

I'm on week 2 of a candida cleanse and I'm still craving sweets!!
