I don't think I'm up to reading all 48 pages of this but I get the general idea since I did read the first page.

Is it hard to find combinations that taste good together or does it mostly all turn out good? What is the best fruit/veggie combination you have found so far?

LOL! Yeah, no need to read all the pages - it's mostly just people commenting and my answering people's questions. 🙂

About it tasting good - it can take some experimenting, although I think that if you stick with the basic recipes on the first post, you should like yours just fine. Occasionally, I experiment with new recipes - sometimes they're great, sometimes they're just okay, and sometimes they're really nasty! hahaha My favorite combinations lately are:

Fruit-based Smoothie:

* 1 apple

* 1 cup frozen mango

* 1/2 cup frozen raspberries

* 1 handful baby spinach

* 2 spoonfuls cocoa powder

* About 2 cups of water

Veggie-based Smoothie (my favorite lately!! I is *very* fresh tasting)

* 1 head Parsley

* 1 handful spinach

* 2 pears

* 1 lemon

* 2 cups water

(You can also add other veggies to this, like cucumber, cilantro, celery, bell peppers, carrots, etc.)

Well, I tried to make a green smoothie today. Try being the key word here. I could still taste the spinach (I didn't even add that much) even after I added 1 apple, 1 banana, a few chunks of fresh pineapple and a couple hand fulls of blueberries. I was just so disgusted by the drink. I might try to produce a more successful drink later, but I think I'm going to just try my fruits and vegetables separate for the time being. I love spinach when in an omelet or quiche, but it just tasted so wrong in that smoothie. I'm going to be eating a lot more spinach from now on, I think. I'll see if it does anything to help my skin.

Hi, I just saw this thread, looks fun :D

Can I use milk instead of water? I have no problem with dairy and I want to get more protein and calcium for weight gain purposes.

LOL, hmm... with all that fruit, I am *very* surprised you could taste the spinach!! Spinach usually has a very mild flavor - I use to sneak it into my brother's smoothies and he *never* had a clue, hehe. Did you use "baby" spinach? No big deal though, there are others ways to get in blended greens - you could try the mostly veggie smoothie, and you could add blended greens to soup bases as well. If you'd like a basic soup recipe, I just posted one on the first page. 🙂

Dairy is one of the top contributers to acne and is by no means a health food, so I'd advice not replacing the water with it. As for protein, beans/legumes, nuts/seeds (especially sunflower seeds) are all excellent sources of protein. As for animal sources, eggs are an excellent source. Dairy may not bother you now, but it may just be a matter of time. Consider reading this article: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/hurtf...acneuh-duh.html

Glad you stopped by and hope you become a new green smoothie fan! 🙂

so by green veggies you mean lettuce? I thought lettuce had no nutrition in it, or at least I assumed that :doh: . When you make the smoothies do you just use lettuce or do you mix in other leafy vegetables too? Would just using something like iceberg lettuce be ok?

Lettuce doesn't have any nutritional value, unless you have it with something else (which is one reason why we use dressing with lettuce) because as it is digested with the other nutritional foods, it is able to do amazing things for our health. If that makes sense.

-use soy or almond milk. I use half water, half soy or almond, and they are excellent.

Do be careful with soy though as for many, it makes them break out. Also, there is much controversy about it. I have decided to avoid it due to having heard about so many developing thyroid problems with it. I have switched to almond milk, but the kind in the store has way too many additives, so I make my own from a recipe found at www.rawfoods.com. 🙂 However, I believe Richie was asking about using the milk for protein sources, and I don't believe he'll get much protein from almond milk like he would soy?

I am going to continue to drink milk regardless, but thanks for the tips. I drink plenty of milk already, and combined with a generally healthy diet and the DKR I'm doing fine acne-wise. Plus I always drink wholemilk, which according to that survey is much less risky than skim.

Duh nuh nuh.... I made a smoothie. And it was Good!

It was:

A cup of silverbeet leaves

a banana

an apple

a mandarin

yoghurt

and milk

Only problem being my food processor is not great so the leaves were in small pieces rather than being pureed. it doesnt bother me though.

Next time I shall use mesclun salad mix as well, cos I dont know if silverbeet is any good nutritionally.

I eagerly anticipate tomorrows smoothie!

I may soon be a convert.

hahaha, you are a hoot Richie!! hehehe 🙂

Your first smoothie sounds yummy!! With your processor, could you try blending a little longer? One thing that makes blended greens so great is that they get so thoroughly blended - much more so than when we chew, so it's important that they blend well. 1 cup of blended greens is equal to eating 4 cups of non-blended greens! You should be able to get a decent blender for under $50 (may not last too long though). Also, Quisinart makes a blender/processor combo for around $100 I think. My sister has that one and loves it.

Love your enthusiasm - I anticipate your smoothie tomorrow as well! Hope it turns out well, and I hope you become a new convert too! 🙂

That would be great! You may want to consider the blended greens soup as well, which is another easy way to get in veggies. I just recently added the recipe to the first post. 🙂

My pleasure! 🙂

Yes, the only difference is that the juicer will remove the fiber and the blender will leave it in. If you have digestive issues and need help with moving things along, then you'll want to use the blender, as the smoothies are a great way to get in extra fiber. However, juicing can be highly beneficial, and if your acne is moderate/severe, it wouldn't hurt at all to consider juicing. I would follow the guidelines given by Dr. Fuhrman in the first post of this thread by doing half green juice and half apple or carrot juice. 🙂

Yeap i made another smoothie this morning, this time it was a jumbo biiiiiig one.

I put it in glasses in the fridge and drank them throughout the day.

It wasnt as good as yesterday, maybe cos I put heaps more greens in and they didnt blend up properly even tho i did it for ages. Luckily mum tells me we are getting an actual blender soon (as opposed to food processor)

How convenient!

In the meantime I shall use less greens and more sweet stuff. Also I forgot to try adding cocoa and cinnamon. :doh:

Sounds like you are doing well. I started out using a food processor too and when I changed to a blender I couldn't believe the difference! I always always put raw cacao powder in my smoothies but what with the holidays I'm down to my last teaspoon and my order doesn't arrive till the 5th! This is truly a tragedy! lol

What I've been doing is sticking in a couple of slabs off my raw chocolate bars. Doesn't blend up as well but still gives it a chocolate kick!

Yep and I've got you to thank for it all! I truly am so grateful for you posting this. It's actually my favourite time of day inventing new smoothies. I'm going to experiment with a bit of broccoli in tomorrow's one... will let you know how that pans out!

How much fiber do those smoothies have? It seems part of the benefit is adding fiber to the diet, though no doubt getting in more veggies is good too on it's own. Are they high in fiber? Is there any way of knowing how much fiber is in those? I know fruit is generally pretty low in fiber (with a few exceptions like pineapple), but what about the veggies? Would you say these smoothies are overall high in fiber?

The smoothies are absolutely high in fiber, and I agree that that is part of their benefit. Staying "regular" is essential to keeping acne at bay, and the smoothies definitely help with that. As for how much fiber, it depends on what fruits/veggies/greens you add to your drinks. All plants foods are great sources of fiber. Here's an article that explains more and gives the fiber content of several foods: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?pfriend...ent&dbid=59 . 🙂

My smoothies have tasted bad, but I found out how to make them taste good. I just add an apple. The ones I make these days contains lettuce, tomato, spinach and an apple. They don't look any good at all :P

Mr M, to be honest I wouldn't expect that to taste amazing! Try adding more fruit. Berries are great and they make it look a nicer colour. Try adding a banana or avocado to make it nice and smooth.

Mr. M, I agree with Ophelia that adding more fruit would help. A green smoothie is actually a fruit smoothie with some greens thrown in. I'd look over the recipes on the first post again for some tips and advice on what fruits to add.

Your recipe above would taste awesome with a lemon and some parsley thrown in. Looks like you're doing more of a veggie based smoothie, and my first post has a basic recipe for those that you might find helpful. 🙂
