Hi ABG Fairy

I left you a post in another column but I'll leave one here.

I've started green smoothies last week (yum) half pear , half banana, frozen mango1/4 cup, and handful of spinach, handful of romaine.

My question is how else should I mix it up ? and yes a shopping list, and how do you make any kind of sweet?

I'm on week 2 of a candida cleanse and I'm still craving sweets!!

Hi! I saw your other post, and I have you highlighted to send some info too, which I will be doing very soon! 🙂

In the meantime, here are some more examples I've come up with:

Examples of other fruit-based smoothies:

Peach-Pear Delight

1 pear

1 cup frozen peaches

1 handful baby spinach

2-3 cups water

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pineapple-Raspberry Paradise

1 apple

cup frozen pineapple

cup frozen raspberries

3-4 flat kale leaves (de-stemmed)

2-3 cups water

tsp cinnamon

Sinfully Chocolate Smoothie:

1 banana

1 cup frozen mango

1/2 cup frozen raspberries

1 handful spring mix

2-3 cups water

2 tbs cocoa powder

Examples of other Vegetable-Based Smoothies:

Fresher than Fresh Green Smoothie:

1 bunch parsley

cucumber

2 pears

1 lemon (Peel away skin and remove large seeds before adding)

3 cups of water

Blended Salad Recipe:

3 stalks of dinosaur kale (flat, dark, kale)

1 cucumber

to cup baby carrots

1 tomato

of an onion

avocado

stalk of parsley

1 lemon (Peel away skin and remove large seeds before adding)

apple

3 cups water

Hi ABG Fairy

I'm on week 2 of a candida cleanse

hey bchapais

i dont think having a fruit based green smoothie is good for your quest in candida cleanse.

sweet fruits feed the candida.. you might want to just stick to apples and lots of greens. berries can do too. but just not too much of them as well. mango is definitely a no. certain pears are very sweet too. the more sweet your green smoothie is.. the more the candida will be delighted..

Ya I think your right. especially the banana. Thats why they taste so good.

But you know.... the nutritionist/nurse/colon hydrotherapist who put me on the regimen said once I've been on about 3-4 weeks I can introduce slowly things like sweeter fruit. Every web site I go on tells me something different. Some say certain nuts others say all, some say only one green apple a day others say any fruit. So you see why its confusing!! I do agree those fruits are sweeter than the apple but do you really think 1/2 a banana a day would set me back? Have you ever done this sort of thing? I would love to talk to someone who has.Thankx

yeah i agree its pretty confusing.. but if health nutritionists or those specialist says that its okay to slowly return to the regular consumption of sweeter fruits.. i think that should be alright. provided it is realli 3-4 weeks after anti-candida diet.. i suspect i have candida too.. so im taking 10B probiotics of acidophillus + bifidobacterium + other strains, and daily consumption of 8 ounce kombucha from yst onwards. i have been taking 6-7 cups of green smoothies daily for the pass 2 weeks too. the green smoothie seem to be very effective in reducing inflammation. i have stopped applying facial stuff for 2 months and because of that i have like 20+ pimples along my jawline and below my cheeks and on my chin now. im not on an anti-candida diet though.. to exclude those regular carbo that i take is simply impossible and my parents would definitely be against it. i just hope this probiotics and greens would do the job. and im doing regular running 3 times a week 30mins duration each time. i personally think that banana in moderate like 3 times a week is alright provided you continue a regular intake of probiotics. the banana contains inulin which is a prebiotic, feeds the probiotics. to counter the sugar content you could take a much larger portion of greens.. i hope that helps..

Hi ABG fairy.. do you think adding cocoa powder to my smoothie would be a bad idea? Because to much chocolate candy makes me break out. I wonder if its just the sugar that causes my acne? I'm afraid to add cocoa powder.

I once believed in all that candida stuff, but not anymore. I do believe it exists in the body but if one has a healthy immune system (by eating a high-nutrient diet), it shouldn't be a concern. That is Dr. Joel Fuhrman's belief about it, and it makes sense to me. If a person has a problem eating certain fruits, it is most likely due to an allergy, and not due to candida. However, those with severe acne should definitely avoid dried fruit, fruit juice and would probably due better eating lower sugar fruits as well.

bchapais, I think the main issue people have with chocolate is due to the sugar and dairy it contains, so I'd go ahead and add it in if you'd like. :) Look for non Dutch processed if you can.

Okay thanks for the input. Can you tell me where Dr.Fuhrmans comments on candida would be? Do you know in what article he discussed it? I'd love to read it. This candida stuff is very different to different people. I would like to hear his thoughts.

I've never had a problem with fruits, love them, just sun dried tomatoes and chocolate candy.

thats why these smoothies are wonderful!! Because it gets more veggies in me( that I'n not fond of)!

I found the information in his forum for paying members. I basically summed up for you what he says. There are several people as well that got over candida symtoms after starting the high-nutrient diet recommended by Dr. Fuhrman. www.drfuhrman.com When you focus on eating high-nutrient foods, it makes life a whole lots easier. I no longer get caught up in anti-candida foods, food combining, low-glycemic foods, etc - I just eat good foods. :)

So glad you are enjoying the smoothies so much! I will be sending you that info you wanted too very soon - just currently tweaking it all up a bit. :)

3rd week on green smoothies.

6 cups of 250ml each cup daily. (2+ handful of green leafy, 2 apples + random greens and random fruits)

compared to last week in terms of facial skin: moderate improvement

the week b4 starting green smoothie(before 11 jan 2008): 20+ pimples, very inflamed 75/100 with as much as 15 pus forming periodically, pimples ranging from small to big spread throughout the jawline and below the cheek.very oily. rate of healing 20/100.

1 week after starting green smoothie(18 jan 2008): 20+ pimples (only 3 new with disappearance of several old ones), moderately inflamed 50/100, pimple shunk significantly and healing faster then usual + bigger acne flatten and turn light brown with as much as 4 pus forming periodically. still spread throughout jawline and below cheek. still very oily. rate of healing: 55/100

2 weeks after starting green smoothie(26th jan 2008): 20+ pimples (4 new with disappearance of several old ones), moderately inflamed 50/100, healing as fast as last week, no significant change with reference to lst week. as much as 4 pus forming periodically. still very oily. rate of healing: 55/100

3 weeks after starting green smoothie (2nd feb 2008): 10+ pimples (3/4 new with disappearance of several old ones), moderately inflamed 35/100, healing slightly faster then last week, some change with reference to 2nd week. as much as 2/3 pus forming periodically. skin moisture better maintained for some reason hence only turn oily after much longer compared to the past. rate of healing: 60/100

external factors that could have caused change in no. of pimples forming:

* week 2: exam and other issue related stress.

* week 2: addition of daily intake of kombucha (a fermented tea by friendly yeast and bacteria that helps detox - 1 days after consuming suddenly increase in pimples. slowed down after the 3rd day and back to the constant healing rate 55/100)

*week 3: addition of daily intake of 10B probiotics supplement from GNC. addition of garlic supplement from GNC. both helpful in maintaining healthy gut flora and eliminating unwanted bad bacteria/yeast like candida. candida could be a possible reason why i have severe acne, gas bloating and weak nails. furthermore i have taken half a year supply of antibiotics in the past.

**note that the scores ?/100 given are only an approximate gauge of how well/bad the aspect is doing. the higher the score the larger the extent.

in terms of inflammation: 100/100 = whole face red. 50/100 = half of the face red. 0/100 = skin not red at all.

in terms of healing rate: 100/100 = no new pimples forming, old pimples are disappearing. 50/100= no additional pimple count, new pimples forming = old pimples disappearing.

0/100 = little or no signs of healing, new pimple forming continuously.

just to let readers out there know: i only use an ordinary tea tree oil facial cleanser and nothing else. the cleanser didnt see to any improvement in the past when i wasnt on greens and the other supplements. hence any improvement in skin condition is solely due to what is consumed into my body in the past 3 weeks.

thanks! (= even if it doesnt eliminate all my acne, eating lots of greens through smoothies not only makes it easier, it actually reduces inflammation much much more then the multi vits and vit A vit E i used to take. i also get to eat 2 large apples a day! makes me feel super healthy..

im abit tempted to purchase those 'green' supplements from GNC though.. they come from sources of greens like chlorella which is superior to the greens i take because the amount of cellulose and other beneficial nutrients in those greens are larger and helps detox to a larger extend.. the supermarket near my house doesnt sell those better greens.. only has organic spinach.. wheat grass, and a couple other chinese named greens... and the rate at which i consume my fresh greens, the expenditure would be higher then the daily recommended doze of those supplements. =\ what do yall think?

Hey lollypolly.. what do you usually put in your smoothies? I've just started making them. I'm addicted. My concern is that I will start putting too much fruit.. I do like sweets>

It is a concern for many about putting in too much fruit. What I tended to find was at the very beginning there was way more fruit than greens. Very slowly I started to up my greens to a level I was comfortable with - this gets less yucky every day. For example, if I started out with the amount of greens I put in now, I'd have hated it. Anyway, after a while doing that I started to decrease the amount of sweet things. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to drink it but you find that your taste changes and you start to prefer them less sweet (well I did). Sometimes I ran out of the sweet fruits so I had to make do with just apple and loads of greens but now that tastes just fine to me.

My advice is just do what tastes good to begin with. If you worry too much about it then what's the point?

Typically I put in

1 banana

3 medjool dates

half punnet berries

2 handfuls of spinach

1 large handful of kale

1 handful of parsley or watercress or lambs lettuce or coriander

spirulina (green powder)

goji berries

Usually I just throw in whatever I've got - go mad!

As for the green powders, I think they have their place and can be a good thing to add to your run of the mill smoothie however personally I don't think they are 100% necessary. Plus they can be a bit pricey!

OK so I don't think I'm adding too much fruit yet. I just won't add more than 3. I use 1

banana usually one apple or pear and a 1/4 cup of frozen berries to 2 large handfuls of greens. I think I will do what you said and decrease the one fruit in a couple of weeks. Then decrease another fruit in a couple more. That way I'll only do one fruit and maybe a small handful of berries. Great idea thanks!

I agree with LollyPolly, that dried greens can have their place but aren't necessary. Dried can't compare to fresh. If you don't have access to blended greens, then they'd be great, but otherwise, I'd stick to freshly blended greens. 🙂

Ah man, what happened to me this week... fucked lol

I brought a green smoothie to work in a glass 0.5L bottle with aluminium foil wrapped around it and I had put it in the fridge. Shouldnt have done that...

My boss walked in our room telling us he had found a strange old thing in the fridge, 'the bottle said it contains orange juice, but it was green and weird'

he just happened to brought a load of cans of soda with him that day and stacked the fridge. He found my smoothie and removed the foil and washed the 'weird fluid' down the sink.

I didnt say anything, felt very uncomfortable :|

ROFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Veen, that is absolutely hilarious!!!!!!!!! Ahhahahahaahahhaha We smoothie fans can find great humor in the reactions of those ignorant to green smoothies around us! haha I get so easily amused over picturing how confused a person must have felt upon seeing a "green smoothie!!" hahahahahha I'm pretty mischievous though and love practical jokes, so I guess that just goes with the territory. :) I have a friend, who works in a "very" nice office building, and she accidentally spilt her smoothie all over the entryway carpet - everyone was probably like, "What's with all that green stuff?!" hahaha Green drinks are becoming more and more mainstream these days, but I guess there are still many people out there, like your boss, who have yet to be enlightened. haha

If you bring it to work again, and are concerned about people's reactions to a fruit smoothie with greens, you could tell them it's just a green drink with veggies - that would sound fairly normal, in a healthful kind of way of course, I would think. :) Also, remember that adding blueberries, raspberries, etc will "mask" the green color. You could just buy a closed, opaque container to put them in everyday as well - or just drink a couple cups before work and drink the other two when you get home?

Personally, I find it particularly fun to be "different" - especially when people make fun of me for it, and I continue with what I'm doing anyway - it makes me feel a bit like a pioneer I guess. :) And truthfully, I think most people wish they had the confidence to be different and do what they believe in. Drink your smoothie and be proud.

lol I was thinking like 'wtf did you do??? that was my afternoon snack!'

I like to be different too and dont care about what people think of my eating habits anymore but it was embarrassing cos it was my 3rd day there (traineeship) and I just let him think it was some 3 year old orange juice laying around :P

Its funny to see people reactions to green smoothies yeah. At my other job I gave it the twist that its a power drink with protein, milk, fruit and some lettuce, to gain muscle :)

you dont wanna spill it on the carpet though LOL people will think someone puked their guts out :D

Ok, so ive decided to jump on the bandwagon and have green smoothies everyday from now on! my new years resolution :D

just wanted to ask, is it ok to just have innocent smoothies (smoothies sold in the UK, theyre already bottled but are 100% fruit, no concentrate, no sugars, no flavours, nothing added) and pouring it into the blender, along with a mega handful of greens. that'd be the same right?

innocent smoothies:

oh and just wondering how this is working for everyones skin? ive been on tane end of last year, so all i need is something to heal my skin now, and figured all the fruits and veg would heal it a treat :)
