Wow I just made a great smoothie from

handful of spinach

1 banana

1 medjool date

half carton blueberries

pint of water

1 tablespoon spirulina

1 tablespoon flaxseed oil

I mixed the last two in cos i hate the taste of them both. It was so nice and yummy, tasted just like my fave which is banana and medjool date smoothie.

What other greens should i be adding and is this too many sweet things?

That sounds yummy!! I don't think you're using too many sweets at all - the banana and the one date are the only sweet things included, so no worries, unless you're very sugar sensitive, and in that case, it'd be good to leave out the date and maybe even the banana and opt for lower sugar fruits. Some people don't do well with dried fruits. Most likely, it's fine though, and a date is a great way to sweeten things!

I'd definitely seek to use other greens besides just spinach. Go to the your local market and just scan over the greens and experiment with what they have. Greens like kale, collards, parsley, cilantro, arugula - whatever green is edible and that you can tolerate. Some people even go out into the wild and pick their own greens! hehe Just be careful with that though - I don't know which ones are safe! If you do chose a green like kale with a tough stem, de-stem it before blended it in. I just wash several leaves at once, stack them up, and then just cut out the stems all in one quick, easy step. 🙂

Hope all is going well wilth your raw food diet! It's harder around the holidays - I've been cheating recently more than what is normal for me. Sure is fun though! haha I'm still eating 90% healthy though, so I figure, no worries. 🙂

I tried this for the first time the other day.

I put in a handful of romaine lettuce

1 bannana only because i didnt have any other fruits

A little bit of cranberry juice and orange juice

1.5 cups of water.

Do you think this is alright and what do you think I should change? Once i buy more fruits i will put 2 in like you say and maybe some frozen ones also.

I had a question though, when you do all this and blend it, does it sometimes have bits of the greens that werent blended? Mine did and it sorda grossed me out, haha.

LOL about the non-blended greens!! haha When I first started the smoothies, I was using a "vintage" Vita-Mix, and it would on occasion have unblended greens as well... kind of annoying!! haha My new Vita-Mix blends everything up nicely though. I would suggest blending a little longer, and hopefully that will fix the problem. 🙂

Your recipe sounds good, but if it's not sweet enough, I'd use more of the sweet fruits like you said you were going to do. Oranges don't help to sweeten, but they do add nice flavor, and the same goes for the cranberry juice (unless it's the sweetened kind of course, hehe).

Good luck! Remember that it might take a while before you figure out how you like your smoothies - just hang in there and stick it out for while. Let me know if you have anymore questions! 🙂

I went to a shop the other side of town and managed to get some curly kale, coriander and watercress so I'm going to give them a try later tonight and tomorrow for breakfast. I also have medjool dates, berries and apples to sweeten it up a bit. This morning I put some raw cocoa powder in and that was yum too! I have some shelled hemp seeds I might throw in for good measure!

Looking forward to experimenting with these. Can't believe it's taken me so long to come round to the fact that green is the way to go!

Raw is going fine except I think I'm intolerant to nuts so I've broken out quite a bit this week :(

^ Glad the smoothies are going well for you!! Sorry about your nut intolerance! :( I wonder if doing the smoothies would allow you to tolerate them again? I know the smoothies allow me to get by with eating certain foods now and then without any problems. I hope you start seeing great results soon! :)

Hopefully, we shall see. I had some cashews tonigh - I never learn! I picked some dandelion leaves today and I'm going to make a super charged smoothie with goji berries and dandelion leaves. I put some curly kale in last night's smoothie but it didn't blend very well. Ended up having to strain it! will try again tonight.

This mornings smoothie had

Spinach

raspberries

blueberries

spirulina

flaxseed oil

hemp seeds

water

cocoa powder

banana

medjool dates

it was yum!

lol no i hadn't de-stemmed it, lesson learned and I made sure I did that last night and it turned out much much better, kale is quite nice and I'd soaked the goji berries before hand to soften them up. I added dandelion leaves to last night's one and they were nice although I put too many berries in and it ended up quite sweet. I'm trying to broaden my horizons a bit so this morning I changed banana for apple and threw together

2 x apple

half punnet blueberries

1.5 handfuls spinach (I'm trying to add in more and more greens gradually)

6 x dandelion leaves

3 x medjool date (can't get enough of these)

spirulina & choc powder & flaxseed oil

2 x teaspoons hemp seeds

It truly was orgasmic! THANK YOU so much for finally making me see sense. I am doing two a day now, I can't wait for breakfast and tea time to come round so I can make up my magic concoctions.

Hemp seeds? Why dont you just put some weed in it, more effective :P

Flax oil is not very good, goes rancid easily, better use ground flax seed...

Coconut flakes is cool, im gonna try that

I just made one for tomorrows lunch:

100gr mixed baby greens

some rice milk

1 avocado (makes it nice and creamy)

1 small mango

can of pineapple slices (in juice)

handfull of cranberries

bit olive oil

some stevia, cinnamon and ginger powder

tastes very nice

1 mandarin

a handful of red grapes

a small bunch of romaine lettuce

1/2 cup of Activia peach flavor

1/2 cup of plain organic soymilk

i know they aren't the healthiest you can put in a green smoothie. but ive also run out of honey which i used to add to add sweetness. anyway, i'd appreciate it more if you could add any simple explanation as to why you called soy milk 'garbage'.

Because it has low nutrition (no absorbable calcium) and many anti-nutrients; its basically non-fermented soy pulp, grounded and mixed with water. Soy is only suitable for human consumption when its fermented - then it CAN have a good effect on your health. Soy milk gave me gas as hell :P

Soy contains a natural chemical that mimics estrogen, the female hormone. Some studies in animals show that this chemical can alter sexual development. And in fact, 2 glasses of soy milk/day, over the course of one month, contain enough of the chemical to change the timing of a woman‚„s menstrual cycle.

Soybeans also contain high levels of the anti-nutrient called "phytic acid. Phytic acid blocks the body's uptake of essential minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron and especially zinc. Epidemiological studies have shown that people in 3rd World Countries who have high consumption of grains and soy also commonly have deficiencies in these minerals.

I was on a roll with my green smoothies but I seem to have lost my flow a bit. This morning I made

2 x red apple

bit of cucumber

3 medjool dates

handful watercress

coconut water mixed with water

handful curly kale

handful goji berries

tsp maca, cocoa powder, flaxseed oil, spirulina and hemp seeds

blueberries

It's alright, not great though. I need to rediscover my edge. I think I prefer the spinach ones but I need to be more hardcore with my greens!

Gonna go to the shop later and see if I can pick up some better greens. I tried basil and coriander in yesterday's ones but they were a bit icky.

You are welcome LollyPolly!! So glad you're enjoying them so much! And, don't worry if you make an icky one now and then. That still happens to me occasionally, and as long as it's okay tasting, I just drink it down. The more you experiment, the more you'll figure out what you like and don't like. You are *very* creative with your smoothies - bet you'll come up with some really awesome stuff! 🙂

There is a lot of controversy about soy. However, there are a LOT of people who say that soy messed up their thyroids. Despite some doctors, like Dr. Fuhrman, who say that soy in moderation isn't dangerous, I decided to cut way back, and it's rare that I use soy products anymore. But anyway, AnswerMe, if you're looking for both sides of the argument, here is some information from Dr. Fuhrman - his post is about 4 posts down: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/healt...o-much-soy.html

That sounds good, I haven't tried the all out veggie ones yet as I'm still a learner. I've heard a lot of people say that you add more and more greens as you go and before you know it you crave the greens and not so much of the fruit. I'll wait until that happens but I do try to add a teeny bit more greens in every time.

Today I bought some spinach (I do like the spinach smoothies), pak choy (bak choi) - can you even blend that? I don't know just saw it and thought what the hell and some parsley. I just made a spinach & parsley one with all my other usual ingredients and you can really taste the parsley! Oh I got some fresh raw beetroot too so I'm going to throw some of that in tomorrow's one to test out. Every time I make it I'm throwing a couple teaspoons of raw choc powder in. It's really satisfying my cravings whilst masking overbearing green taste. I think maybe I should try to avoid using it every single time!

That's nearly been a week of blending I think? I am loving them big time. I have only been using banana or apple as a base. I don't think oranges agree with me. What other things could I try? Would pear be suitable or not strong enough to mask the green taste?

I saw you have 4 cups a day, does that mean you make four different kinds? I am making one for breakie and one after dinner but make about a pint or so each time and drink all in one go.

Thanks for your advice fairy! :) You're so supportive on this thread!

Dear all,

I have taken purely fruit and vegetable for the past three months with small amount of nuts and seeds, occasionally I will take egg or meat for about once or twice a month. As a result, I have no breakout and clear skin, thanks for that. But, I have my period stop for three months since I started this new diet style. I did some reading and they did mention that sudden diet style change may affect the period somehow. My main concern actually is, I did feel frequent urination urge and some kind of urge (of something is coming out) at the bottom part of abdomen since two months ago. This has troubled me for quite some time, I did some reading and I think the culprit may be lack of essential fatty acid. I am just wondering those who are doing this regime, did you ever have this strange feeling and how did you overcome?

I think that we all should take note of the essential fatty acid that our body needs.

I am sorry if this seems off topic to you....

Do you mean you have been eating only raw fruit and vegetables or cooked? It's possible your periods have stopped because you have dropped weight? This is quite common among raw people in particular. If you are talking about a frequent urge to go pee but not peeing then that could be a urinary tract infection. I'm only speculating, I think the best bet is to go see your doctor for a check up.

Re EFA, I get the bulk of mine from hemp seeds and flax seed oil.

Hope it works out for you

I tried this.. I looked what we vegs we could have in the refrigerator, and I ended up mixing 3 small tomatoes, 2 carrots a piece of cucumber and some lettuce.

The consistency was really naughty :P Maybe I should let the blender work for 10 minutes so it gets really mixed up.. Tomorrow I will buy more vegetables and try more. If this works I will quit my b5 (which I've used 3 weeks). Thank you for this thread.

I would love to have a go at drinking these delicious sounding green smoothies. i feel as if i don't get nowhere near enough fruit or veg in my diety, today I've had a total of 0 portions LOL.

The thing is I ahev 1 question before i start, how loud are blenders? Are they painfully loud? See i don't wanna damage my hearing, does it depend on what's being blended? Also Is it ok to put veg in the blender like chopped carrots? or are they too hard.

Hi there

My blender isn't that loud and it does the job really well. I'd say it's probably equivalent of switching on your hoover and sitting right beside it. But you'll only have it on for a minute or so.

As for harder items I guess it depends on your blender. Mine struggles if it's too big so I cut harder things down in to smaller chunks. You might be better starting off with the smoother items if you're new to it all.

All I can say is that having these smoothies is the best thing I have ever done for my health. It goes way beyond my skin but it does have a nice glow about it these days!

Good luck!

I just wanted to check back in with my experience with green smoothies. I made them faithfully for 6 1/2 weeks and only missed maybe 2 days out of the whole time. Basically it really didn't seem like i had any improvement in my skin. i think the fish oil i was taking was keeping my breakouts down. I was still breaking out here and there though so it didnt seem to me that green smoothies were going to be my cure :( just don't have the heart to continue making them, i think i would have seen some improvement by now if it was going to work. i'm now trying other dietary experiments b/c i still think my acne can be cured with food & supplements.

With the fruit based smoothie, it can take a while to get used to adding more greens. However, with the veggie based smoothie, you'd be surprised at how tasty it is!! It's easier to pile on the greens with that recipe and still have it taste great. :)

Bok Choy is very easy to blend and highly nutritious. I love adding parsley to the veggie based smoothies. I don't see a problem with always adding cocoa powder - I usually always add it when I make fruit based smoothies. Cocoa powder is good for you! :)

Pears are great to add to smoothies as are mangoes, pineapples, etc.

I only make one smoothie a day, but it usually consists of at least 4 cups, which I drink throughout the day. I drink part of it right away, and the rest I store in the fridge to drink later. :)

hi green smoothie fairy! just dropping by to say thanks guys for the info & links on soy. :)

No problem, and glad you stopped by! :)

I completely agree with LollyPolly here. Also, the urge to use the restroom but not really needing to can also be a symptom of kidney stones (I know this from experience!). Any pain in your side? Once I realized the culprit, I quickly got over my kidney stones with Chinese herbs... we're talking over night. Feel free to PM me about this. :)

You're welcome! Hmm... I would try adding more water and blending a little longer. Sounds like a great smoothie you made! Do be sure to add enough greens, and with the ingredients you used above, an apple, lemon, and a little parsley would taste divine. :)

The smoothies are a great way to get in extra fruits and veggies!

Blenders are loud. I use ear protection from home depot. They look like ear muffs and work great. The blender can be louder if you're using frozen ingredients. It's fine to add chopped carrots if your blender tolerates them. I use a Vita-Mix which blends just about anything but maybe just one small piece of carrot and see how it does. :)

Sorry Ami. :( It may be that you need to do more than just the smoothies alone. Greens are the most powerful foods you can do for your skin, but if you're still eating dairy, animal products, etc. they may not be enough to combat those foods. Have you tried fully eliminating diary? Also, besides just the smoothies, you could also do green "juices" which will be an even bigger anti-acne punch. Also, it's very important to make sure you are getting enough fiber as to have proper elimination - getting, uh, backed up, will contribute to acne for sure. It's very important to keep things moving. But anyway, sorry the smoothies alone aren't your answer. :( I hope you're able to discover what works for you very soon. :)
