This may already have been answered somewhere in the topic, but does anyone know if flaxseed oil works just as well as ground flaxseed?I need to get myself a blender.
I have read that ground flaxseeds is better, because you're getting the whole seed with all of the nutrients and lignans... or something like that. 🙂
Veggie girl,Do you not eat fruit? I think it's important to get in a few portions daily.
I stay away from high sugar fruits, but eat plenty of fruit: lemons, limes, cucumbers, avocados, and tomatoes...many people forget (or I guess don't know?) that the last three are fruits.

It's great that you are such a conscientious eater, and you're right, many do forget that those foods are considered fruits. I'd be curious to know though how they compare nutrient wise to other fruits, or if their nutrient contents are more like veggies? Hmm.... now you have me pondering. 🙂 All berries, green apples, grapefruits, kiwi, and oranges are all low sugar fruits as well - even fine for those with diabetes to eat them (no more than a few portions at a time though, according to Dr. Fuhrman, M.D.). I like to get a variety of fruit, and berries have some of the highest anti-oxidant count of any food out there. I often eat high sugar fruits, and my skin is still doing great - I have read that if you eat greens along with the fruit, the greens help balance out the fruit sugars - works me for! 🙂
Did anyone see Dr. Oz on Oprah this past week? He made a green smoothie (which he calls his *green drink*)!!
From Oprah: http://www2.oprah.com/health/oz/slide/2007...5_350_111.jhtml
Dr. Oz says he makes a breakfast drink for himself many mornings that he calls his green drink.
What's in Dr. Oz's green drink?
[note: The ingredients posted at the website seem off to me... I remember smaller amounts on the show!! Dr. Oz made a big deal about how important it is to include the apple (for sweetness) and the lemon!]
2 cups spinach (I think he just used one on the show?)
2 cups cucumber (I remember him saying 1 cucumber)
1 head of celery (I remember him saying four stalks)
1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
1 bunch parsley
2 apples (I remember him just saying 1)
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon
After everything is combined in a blender, this recipe makes 28 to 30 ouncesabout three to four servings. Oprah takes a sip and is pleasantly surprised. "It's a glass of fresh," she says.
---I just made a smoothie a while ago with 1 bunch parsley, 2 pears, one lemon and about 3 cups of water - delicious, and definitely had that "fresh" taste!
I have yet to make myself a green smoothie... lol. Still haven't gotten around to buying a blender. Soon!Oh yeah, do you guys eat anything before/after a green smoothie or do you eat drink it by itself, like a little meal?
You're going to have so much fun when you get your blender!! 🙂
I don't know about everyone else, but I just usually drink mine on its own, but sometimes I'll drink a couple cups or two after dinner (usually only if it's a "chocolate" smoothie though, hehe). 🙂
Has anyone noticed that their skin gets dry from these smoothies? My husband does kale smoothies and his skin gets really dry from them.thanks
Ehh, I dont know if he does, but you cant eat kale raw... you need to cook it first, but I wouldnt use it in a smoothie
And how do you know his skin gets dry from the smoothie, maybe its the environment

Actually, you can eat kale raw, but it's just not very palatable, haha. I always, always remove the stems before adding raw kale to my smoothies, otherwise, it gets way too fibery.... eeew!
I'm starting this up again and this time sticking to it!! Previously I had tried with yogurt and juice in my smoothies and wasn't seeing results so I nixed those two. Made a pretty decent one last night:
1 banana
handful of cranberries (nice flavor actually)
1/2 orange
frozen strawberries
2 big handfuls of baby spinach
3/4 cup water
1 scoop whey protein powder
dash of honey
Anyone else got any new tasty recipes?
^ Hi Ami!
Glad you're starting them up again!! I hope you see improvements soon!
The key with them is to keep experimenting and find what you like. It took me a while to learn how to make mine taste good. Try to stick to sweet fruits like apples, pears, bananas, mango, pineapple, etc.
Just wanted to say that the green smoothies (salad mix w/ spinach) has really killed my acne. Now all I have are red spots. I use goat's milk (about 3/4 cup) and kefir (plain, 1/4 cup) instead of water since I already get enough of that anyways. Cheers to the thread! I've been on the smoothies for 2 weeks now.
Oh! I also use some natural whey protein.
Any advice on the red marks? Point me to a good thread maybe?

Wow!!! I'm glad you're seeing results so fast! 2 weeks is a little fast I think to know for sure whether or not the results will stick around, but I've got my fingers crossed for you!!
I'd be cautious of using that much dairy, but just keep an eye out. 🙂 If you're going to eat dairy, goat's milk and kefir are certainly good choices!!
Why are you doing the whey protein? Do you feel you're not getting enough protein from your food choices? It's best to get protein from whole foods rather that protein powders if you can.
For the red bumps, I would recommend a BHA like salicylic acid (glycolic acid), or, try using Retin-A, which can speed up healing. I think there's a forum on this site about scarring - you might find some good info there. 🙂
Thanks for the tips! Yea it's been fun experimenting. I've tried a lot of fruits so far including oranges, apples, pears, bananas, strawberries, mixed frozen berries, frozen peaches, frozen mangoes, and a mixed bag of frozen melons/cantaloupe/grapes/peaches. so far i think my favorite mixtures are the ones with berries and bananas. they seem to be the yummiest. the peaches are good too.
won won, that's great to hear you're having success! as far as the red spots i recommend not worrying about them, only time really will heal them if you ask me. they can take several months to heal but as long as you're not breaking out anymore they should heal up pretty quickly. i've been taking fish oil (3g daily) and i think that helps speed up skin healing a bit. my face certainly has a nice glow to it and skin feels smoother.

I would normally agree with you, but I take this.
I definitely have a lot of meat during the day too.
Has anyone noticed a change in dark circles after drinking green smoothies after a while? Just wondering... I'm not sure if dark circles can be abolished by a healthier diet, but that would be great...
Dark circles are caused by the liver being overworked. So yes! I would definitely think it can be remedied through a healthier diet and the green smoothies.
I think one of the major reasons the green smoothies work is that most of them would be fairly alkaline. If you add in heaps of acidic fruits like blueberries, cranberries, and plums, it might negate the healing properties of them. The most alkalising fruits are lemon, limes, avacados, and grapefruit which are probably the best to add to the smoothies. Just a thought.

I definitely don't add those fruits in. They are nowhere near as good as bananas or raspberries in the smoothie.
Not one new pimple in 2 days! That's a record without topicals. The smoothies are the ONLY change to my diet in the last two weeks.
AFter doing these smoothies for quite awhile now, I can honestly say they are not helping my skin. 🙁 They are very tasty however! I think I make mine a bit too sweet but oh well. Im addicted now!
Aw, and you're a very healthy, mostly vegan eater too, right? Maybe adding twice the amount of greens to yours? I like mine really sweet too, but lately, I've been making mine with lots of greens, veggies, parsley and a small amount of fruit. The recipe below doesn't taste like fruit, but it tastes *very* fresh and has lots and lots of greens - you might want to try it! 🙂
* 1 or 2 pears
* 1 bunch parsley
* 1/2 cucumber
* 1 lemon (just skin in, cut in half, scoop out seeds, and throw in the blender)
* 2-3 cups water
***Be sure to add at least one pear (or apple) and the lemon, otherwise, it may taste a bit bitter. 🙂

Wow!!!! I really hope those results continue for you! Let us know! 🙂
I was making these for myself most mornings for about a week or two, but they always make me feel sooo high from all the sugar. It seems like that much sugar can't be good, but its such a great way to get those greens in. I use about 2 cups of spinach with a banana, some frozen strawberries and frozen blueberries or raspberries. I am torn. Anyone else experience this sugar high?
All,
I have added new recipes and video links to the first page for those who would like to check them out!

You might just be really sensitive to fruit sugars, and bananas are high in fruit sugar. What you described happens to my sister if she drinks a smoothie with too much fruit. Apples are sweet without being so high in sugar - maybe try one of those? Also, you may want to take a look at the new recipe I posted about the veggie based smoothie - that one might be more suitable for you.
