Thanks acne be gone fairy..youre awesome. Ive been doing a green smoothie in the morning and usually a salad at night. I need to start doing more cooked vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower too. Just since cutting out grains I dont know what kinda sauce to make with them since I cant have soy sauce.
My acne is terrible right now. I really hope all these changes will pay off.
OH YEAH! I tried something today. Since I was worried a little bit about yeast issues, I decided to make a "savory" smoothie today instead of a sweet one and I LOVED how it turned out!
I used:
handful of baby spinich
1/2 avacado
handful of romaine leaves
half of a lemon{not juice, I cut the pulp out}
two tomatoes
a handful of baby carrots
a handful of alfalfa sprouts
SMALL amount of whey protien powder {havent been able to get hemp protien yet}
teaspoon of spirulina algae
1/2 teaspoon {aprox} of cayenne pepper
a few pinches of black pepper
It turned out..AWESOME! I absolutely loved it. It didnt spike my blood sugar the way the fruity smoothies do {its okay sometimes I just want to watch my sugar especially since I got a yeast infection right after starting these smoothies} and it was delicious. Honestly..I freakin love vegetables. Its good to know the veggie smoothies taste just as good so I can have them when I dont feel like something sweet. The cayenne pepper made it just the right amount of spicy!
I've been wanting to do this since fooooooreeever but I don't know what kind of blender to get. Recommendations? I don't want some random cheap one that might break down easily, but I don't want a really expensive one either (like above $200 or so).
I'd recommend a Vita-Mix. They are excellent blenders, and I love mine!! Maybe you could find a used one on ebay? If not, just be sure to chose a high-powered blender.
I was just wondering if it tastes really weird to have veggies and sweet fruit together...I remember my neighbors mom making me and my best friend eat this concoction of vegies like carrots and stuff with apples or w.e...I threw up
Well, if you just use a small amount of greens, and a mild tasting one, like baby spinach, you won't even taste it in your smoothie. However, mixing greens and fruit is just a personal thing - most people prefer more of a fruit taste in their smoothies, but I know some people that prefer more greens than fruit! You'll just have to give it a try and see. 🙂 For you, I'd start with something like 1 1/2 cups frozen mango or pineapple, 1/2 cup frozen berries, and a small handful of baby spinach. Oh, and you could throw some cocoa powder in there too if you wanted. 🙂

Aw, thanks! 🙂 Wow, I'm impressed, because you came up with a blended salad all on your own!!! It took me a year before I made a "non-fruit" smoothie! haha Yours sounds delicious!! Onions and garlic would be great in that too! It's it great to know too that you're getting four times the amount of nutrition from eating that all blended than if you ate it as a salad? And - you don't have to use a high fat dressing!
Oh, you mentioned a sauce for your veggies. You could make a nut based cream sauce by doing (1 cup cashews, 1 cup almond milk, 2 tbs fresh lemon juice and 2 tbs dried onions - blend). Butter buds are really good on veggies, and sometimes I'll just do a scoop or two of almond butter with some Thai seasoning. 🙂
I bet you'd really enjoy making some veggie soups too! Here is a really tasty recipe of mine that is really simple, easy to make, and perfect for this time of year, as it has a savory, Thanksgiving time taste to it. 🙂
Carrot/Orange Soup:
* 1 quart carrot/orange juice (mostly carrot I think) as the base (Or, veggie broth)
* 1 lb frozen broccoli blended with juice
* 2 small zucchinis blended with juice
* 1 lb frozen mixed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) added to soup (I like to dice mine into bite sized pieces by putting them in my Vita Mix on low).
* Lentils
* turmeric, cinnamon, vegizest (dried veggie powder) added - these flavorings taste awesome with the base!!
* Cream - Optional (equal parts cashews (or almond, walnuts, etc) to unsweetened soy milk, or just blend cashews with the juice) - still delicious without this.
* Brown rice - Optional
* heat on low until warmed
There are SO many different veggie soup combos that can be made!! It's so easy to just blend a bag of frozen veggies with a liquid base (carrot juice, tomato juice, veggie broth, etc), add in some diced veggies (If I don't feel like washing and cutting, I just put some frozen veggies into my blender (vita-mix, which is high-powered) on low), add in some beans or lentils, spices (for example, for chili, saute some onions and garlic in a teaspoon or oil or broth, and add those into the soup along with chili spices like cumin, chili powder, etc), diced tomatoes, etc. Easy!! 🙂
How long {those who have had success} did you guys take drinking these smoothies before you noticed a difference in your skin?
Ive changed my diet a LOT in the past few weeks. No noticable difference yet though.
edit- lol thoushaltlaugh! I picture all of us acne.org people in our kitchens going nuts putting random things into the blender like mad scientists or something.
i just made a green smoothies that tastes so horrible! lol!i mixed one carrot, a bunch of celery and one capsicum. the taste of celery dominates the other taste and it is definitely not very yummy! and i couldn't stand it and mixed a bit of raisins to sweeten it 😛
LOL!!! Carrots, celery and spice, oh my!!!! hahahhaha That's quite a combination! hehe How about adding some leafy greens (the key ingredient for improving your skin) and some fruit to sweeten it? Maybe try following the basic recipe on the first post? If you keep experimenting, you'll find something you like. Let me know how it goes!! LOL 🙂

I think for most, 6 weeks would be enough time, but I know that for some, it can take a few months before changes are seen. I guess it all depends on what kind of diet you were eating beforehand. My diet, before starting the smoothies, wasn't comprised of many veggies or greens, but at the same time, it wasn't comprised of a lot of junk either, so maybe that's why I responded so quickly.
Are you still eating dairy or animal products? Hang in there - I'm sure you will start noticing differences soon! 🙂
I eat eggs, and one small serving of dairy a day {which I seem to be able to tolerate, Ive done countless tests on myself trying to figure out what foods Im sensitive to and not}. The thing with me is, when something irritates me{food allergy, stress, etc}, I get a zit almost instantly. People say this is impossible and its untrue for me. Ive tested it.
I do feel better from having a smoothie every day! Im still detoxing a lot from liver and parasite cleanses and I think all this nutrition is helping a lot.

Hmm... I wonder if you cut out dairy if you would then be less susceptible to breaking out due to stress or food allergies? I'd make sure you're eating organic dairy products free from antibiotics and hormones, which I'm sure you are.
I'm glad you're feeling better with the smoothies! 🙂
^Nah, no organic dairy where I live. Ill definately always buy that kind if it exists though.
Ive cut out dairy before for random bits of time and it didnt seem to make a difference. BUT- its definately true that too much dairy is bad. Ive found if I have more than one small serving a day I feel really mucousy and irritated. I also cant drink milk or eat too much cheese but I seem to be able to eat cottage cheese and yogurt {the yogurt I get is all natural, the cottage cheese is just the crappy foster farm brand}.
Im moving soon and hopefully there will be some better grocery stores there. Unfortunately, sometimes it comes down to how expensive something is and the organic dairy costs more Ive heard.
^ Ah, gotta love cottage cheese!! I rarely ever eat it, and I never crave it, but I definitely enjoy it - grew up on the stuff! haha With the yogurt, hopefully you're at least getting acidophilus in it - at least you know what your limits are with it.
I hear you about the expense! Organic is good, especially for foods like apples, strawberries, etc. that are really sprayed heavily with pesticides, but on the other hand, people have gotten well just by eating a healthful diet with no organics!
^ Good thinking! I read once at the Centers for Disease Control that they recommend thoroughly rinsing produce in plain water only, but who knows! Oh, one more thing about pesticides - I have also heard that if present on fruits and vegetables, often, the insoluble fiber in that produce will "absorb" much of the pesticides present on that produce once inside the body, so I thought that was good to know as well! I guess the main key is to just eat fruits and veggies - however you can get them!
~ Acne Be Gone Fairy (Who's off to go make some very green cruciferous vegetable juice).
^True, organic stuff is always nicer, but the benefits of even unorganic fruits and vegetables way outweigh the risks IMO. I read somewhere awhile back that the pesticides in produce are nowhere near as absorbed as pestacides in meat. That basically whatever crap they feed the cows(not to mention the crap they give the cows to make them make more milk, etc), if it has stuff on it, the cows eat it, and then residues remain in the fat of their body. Then when you eat a steak, you get all this stuff thats stored in the fat. Fat makes a lot of stuff more absorbed in the body.
Yeah Im not a scientist and am not very good at explaining this stuff lol..but it relates to what you said pretty much, that the fiber and other stuff in the fruit helps sweep a lot of that stuff out of the body. Still, washing everything is important!
Anyways, *bump*ing this thread, we havent talked about our smoothies in a bit. I made a good one today, a big handful of baby spinach, one peach, a handful of frozen strawberries and two big scoops of hemp protein!
^ You are so right about pesticides and toxins being stored in animal fat!! I don't think most people realize this. I agree that the important thing is to just eat fruits and veggies, however you can get them!
Your smoothie sounds similar to what I made today! Kept it very simple - just frozen fruit mix (mango, banana, and strawberries I think) with some spinach, flax seeds and water!
I never really tried the green smoothies since I eat alteast once salad a day or I have a supergreen drink with spirlana, barley, wheatgrass etc. I guess I need to try one of these green smoothies. I think i might use spinach, blueberries, flax oil, advocado, water, and papaya.
Yum!!

Sounds like a great smoothie recipe!! You'll actually get even more nutrition from the smoothies rather than the salad or green drink, because unlike the salad, you'll be getting 4 times the nutrition from the greens you add in (because they have been blended and the cell walls have been broken down, which releases more nutrition), and you'll get more than with the green drink, since the ingredients are all fresh. Glad you're going to give them a try!! 🙂
Has anyone noticed that their skin gets dry from these smoothies? My husband does kale smoothies and his skin gets really dry from them.thanks
I have not noticed this myself, but there have been a couple posters that have reported this. If your husband's skin in uncomfortably dry, he could try adding 1 tbs of ground flax seed to his smoothies, eating nuts/seeds, or adding some fish oil to his diet.

thanks for the response. Both flax and fish oil makes our skin even more dry-hurting dry! Do you know why /how the smoothies cause dry skin? Doesnt it seem weird for green leafy veggies to be causing dry skin?

No problem! 🙂 I've never heard of oils making one's skin more dry, so I'm at a loss on that one! I'd say only 4 or 5 people have commented on the smoothies making their skin less oily, but not overly dry. My reasoning is that greens help regulate your hormones, so that could be the reason for producing less oil. I don't understand why your skin is uncomfortably dry though. I take it you're drinking plenty of water? What type of cleanser are you using? This article by skin care expert, Paula Begoun might be useful: http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/art.asp?ID=140 . I hope you're able to figure the problem out!! I would just focus on eating lots of veggies, especially green veggies, and hopefully your hormones will normalize, and you will start producing the right amount of moisture for your skin. Wish I had more answers for you! Maybe consider starting a new topic on this? There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this board. 🙂
I just came across this thread and have to say I green smoothies-have been making them for a few months now.
I agree with the acne bomb comment! If I drank/ate all that fruit I'd break out really bad for sure! Not to mention all that sugar=yeast.
IMO, adding a handful of greens to a fruit smoothie does not make it a green smoothie! I guess my definition of a green smoothie is not the color, but rather the ingredients=mainly green vegetables.
All greens have different types of low doses of alkaloids. Victoria Boutenko, the founder of green smoothies, talks of the dangers of doing too much of one green.
I'd love to see her credentials and find out why she thinks it is dangerous, as I have read quite the opposite-that an alkaline diet is very good for you and one should aim to remove the acids from their body. I've been following an alkaline diet and have never felt healthier or had clearer skin. Some of the more commercial versions are the PH Miracle & the Acid-Alkaline Diet. This is a diet recommended by many holistic doctors and also given to Cancer patients, Diabetics, Candida sufferers, people looking to lose weight, etc.
In another topic on juicing I think I posted a green smoothie recipe, doesn't taste all that great, but once I noticed the difference in how I felt, how my skin became radiant and clear, and how much energy I got from it I was hooked! Variations could be adding organic powdered (or freshly juiced) wheat/barley/dog/lemon/shave grass and/or juiced: asparagus, turnip greens, dandelion greens, parsley, basil, mint, boston lettuce, or green peppers.
Alkaline Green Smoothie Recipe:
1 peeled lemon
1 peeled lime
2-5 stalks celery
1 roma tomato
1 peeled cucumber
handful broccoli
2 handfuls kale
1 handful mustard greens
small bunch collard greens (too much makes it bitter)
1-2 cups spinach
avocado
2 tbsps olive, flax, or coconut oil
1 gram sea salt
Juice all veggies except the spinach & avocado, then liquefy all in the blender.
-To sweeten, omit the mustard & collard greens and add 1 juiced pear, another cucumber, and you can also add up to 1 tsp of Stevia.
-An easier version would be just cucumber, kale, lime, spinach, and avocado.
Both flax and fish oil makes our skin even more dry-hurting dry! Do you know why /how the smoothies cause dry skin? Doesnt it seem weird for green leafy veggies to be causing dry skin?
I don't believe that the flax oil or veggies are creating the dry skin, in fact they usually make dry skin better if not go away altogether. Make sure you are drinking adequate water; 1 liter for every 40lbs you weigh, dry skin brushing helps, don't take really hot baths or showers, and moisturize with an oil such as almond, coconut, or sesame right after you shower.
how many greens and fruits do you a week on avg for your green smoothies? im thinking of adding one daily for lunch or something.
My smoothies now consist of usually one piece of fruit, like an apple, maybe 1/3 cup frozen berries, 1/3 cup frozen fruit like mango, etc, and 2 large handfuls of greens. I usually do this 7 days a week. On the main page, I have more fruit and less greens listed, and this is to help people "ease into" the smoothies, because most want their smoothies to taste like fruit when they start. Glad you want to try them! I think it's so important to get in blended greens, however it is you do it! 🙂 You can also make "blended salads," which are all veggies, and I make veggie soups too in which I will add blended leafy greens and veggies.
Veggie girl,
Do you not eat fruit? I think it's important to get in a few portions daily.
Your smoothies sound like what I call "blended salads," which are smoothies made of all veggies and no fruit. Most people refer to fruit/green smoothies as green smoothies, and one handful of greens is enough to make a green smoothie.
I actually use more greens and less fruit than in the main recipe, but for most people to do this, especially in the beginning, it's best for them to start with less greens so that their smoothie tastes more like a "fruit" smoothie. I want people to succeed with this, and most people aren't too excited about drinking a drink that tastes like "leafy greens!" haha
Oh, your reference to Victoria Boutenko... she was talking about alkaloids (naturally occurring toxins found in some foods), not alkaline, and as far as I know, all leafy greens are alkaline, and I know Victoria would agree that an alkaline diet is a very healthy diet. 🙂
The thing to remember is drinking these smoothies isnt the same as drinking fruit juice. You are getting all the fiber with the fruit too, helping it break down slower and not spiking your blood sugar. I was worried about yeast problems too when I first started the smoothies, but now I think my system is getting healthier and I havent had any more yeast infections or anything. The fruit smoothies are awesome!
