I tried these for the first time today. They were amazing! My first one tasted like apple pie!

Couple of questions before I start:

1. Is there DEFINITELY an initial breakout when doing this?? My face is about 95% clear right now and I just want to drink these smoothies because they are healthy, so I don't want to have any kind of breakout.

2. Can I just buy the romaine lettuce that comes in a bag?

3. Does this get expensive? It seems like it would for having one everyday.

1) I don't know why anyone would really get an intitial breakout from consuming smoothies. Maybe if you had a bunch of acne underneath the surface, in that case that would have to come to the surface anyways.

2) Yeah, romaine is good, but IMO those bags are way overpriced. If you go to a fruit market or farmer's market you can get greens for a fraction of the price.

3) it's cheap as hell if you shop at the right places. A good fruit market will have all your fruits and greens for under $1 a pound. Two peices of fruit can cost a dollar and half a pound of greens (which is A LOT) would run maybe 50 cents. Stuff like collards and mustard greens run really cheap, like 50-60 cents a pound. All in all, A smoothie can cost you about $1-2$ tops unless you are buying all aorganic or something.

This sounds like it would be pretty good to get a good amount of fruits and veggies since I'm too lazy to just snack on them through out the day, but I'm just worried it would taste funny.

I would easily be able to get the greens though I imagine, there's a garden in our backyard, and we have farmers markets every Thursday evening, my step sister has a rather large garden as well that provides a good amount for our farmers markets.

Dyl - so glad you liked your first smoothie so much!!! =D

Card00d85 - I wouldn't worry about an initial breakout! You could always slowly "ease" into the smoothies though and just start with a small amount of greens and fruit - maybe 1 cup a day - do that for a couple of days, and then add another half cup and so on. :)

Ariventa - those are awesome tips, and you've really inspired me to go shop at my local farmer's market!!

X__Tiff - I recommend just starting out with a "small" amount of greens - preferably a mild tasting green like baby spinach or baby romaine. The more you experiment with different fruits and greens, the sooner you'll discover what you like. How great that you can get wild grown greens in your step-sister's garden!!!

I'll have to try this out next time I find a way to get out and get some more fruits and such at the store, one problem to this is I don't think I've got a blender. :surprised:

I'm quite sure my step dad broke it trying to make some frozen margaritas.

We've been looking into buying a newer one recently anyways so once I find time to get out I'll look into gathering up the stuff to make it. Maybe use more fruits than greens to try and give it a more sweet taste?

alright i think green smoothies are an awesome thing, but i only made one smoothie so far thats semi-tasty. Do carrots or broccoli make good smoothies?

This is what I made:

2 bananas

frozen strawberries

handful of romaine lettuce

tbsp. ground flax seeds

water

x__Tiff, I hope you're able to get a blender soon! :) And yes, I would definitely start with more fruit - at least 60-70%, and then you can always start doing more greens as you go along. :)

pcpwns, carrots and broccoli would be fine. The smoothie you made sounds delicious!! If you were wanting it sweeter still (it should have been plenty sweet though, as bananas are very sweet), you could add some mango or pineapple - or even some honey. :)

I'll have to talk with my parents about it, my step father should be coming back home tomorrow, so I can try and gather up a good amount of fruits, and veggies if we go out to the store, and talk them into getting a blender. I'll try starting with more fruit, then occasionally add in more greens, see what I am comfortable with and what tastes alright to me.

The thought of a veggie and fruit drink doesn't seem like it tastes too good right off the top of my head, but a lot of nasty sounding food usually do turn out to be some of the best.

^ That's great! I hope you're able to get a blender very soon. I think it's great that you're being open-minded about the green smoothies even though they don't particularly sound good to you. :) A lot of people (even my own brother!) would refuse to even try one! It *does* sound very foreign at first though!! haha Just remember to start with a lower percentage of greens, like you're planning, and maybe start with a mild green, like baby spinach. :)

Well, I'd have no reason to just not try it, from the looks of it others around here are seeming to enjoy it so it is worth a shot, and since I am too lazy to eat my fruits and veggies through out the day this would be a good way for me to get them, and enjoy something if I turn out to like the green smoothie. :D

I've tried out some pretty weird foods from other things, like cheez-it's and BBQ sauce. [ Odd but quite tasty really.]

too much much sugar will break you out, dont make it so sweet.

Great info! I normally go for fruit smoothies with no vegetables, because fruit tastes really good in a smoothie!

still doing the smoothies, i add a lot more greens (baby spinach, brocolli and herb leaves) with a few fozen mixed berries and water (so its not that great tasting). just struggeling with the motivation. however, if i am constantly reminded on how good they are for my health, it helps. Would you recommend the 'Eat to Live' book? Is there a lot of information on the benefits of ingesting more greens?

x__Tiff, let me know when you try them! :)

luckylotte, thanks! :) If you like your fruit smoothies, I think you'll be surprised at how good they still taste with a few greens added! I'd start with a small amount of baby spinach, as it has a really mild flavor. :)

Lilo, good for you making such healthy smoothies!! I use a lot of greens too, so mine don't always taste awesome either, but as long as they don't taste "bad," I'm happy with them. On occasion when I do want them to taste really good, I'll use less greens and will sometimes add unsweetened vanilla soymilk by Westsoy.

Lilo, unfortunately, the powdered greens can't compare to fresh greens, so you will most likely not get the same results. If you want it to be really easy, I suggest pre-washed, packaged salad greens like baby spinach, romaine, spring mix, etc. 🙂

I was a bit skeptical of how it'd taste, but I made my first smoothie tonight with:

1 Apple

10-15 green/red Grapes

1/4 cup Frozen Raspberries

Large handful of Spinach/Romaine

It tasted awesome! This will definately be a daily thing from now on.

I'm always so happy to read posts like this!! 🙂 I'm thrilled that you liked your smoothie, and the more you make them and experiement with different fruits, the more you'll like them! I made an awesome one today with spinach, frozen tropical fruit mix and frozen cherries (I was out of fresh fruit!). Lately, I'm addicted to adding frozen mango to mine. 🙂

I have a question.

Are any of you guys worried about feeding candida overgrowth with all the sugars in the fruits we are eating in the smoothies? Im trying to avoid all wheat gluten for awhile to see if it helps my skin, therefor Ive basically been living off these smoothies. I just dont want to throw my body into severe candida either. I love the smoothies though, Ive been doing them for three days now. I feel like fruit can be really good, Im just scared of doing something wrong I guess.

I;m not worried about it. I believe I used to have some candida issues. My tongue was really white and coated and I had that yeasty feeling all the time. That went away a long time ago and the smoothies haven't made a negative impact. I have even been using some apple cider in the smoothies since it's starting to get to that time of year, becoming colder etc. And I'm fine. I will mention I put about 2 tablespoons of olive oil and protein powder in my smoothies so I get a pretty balanced, high calories smoothie. Here's my typical recipe:

1-2 pieces of fruit. usually Bananas, apples, pears, grapes

8-12 oz. of greens (around 4-6 handfuls) Usually chard, mustard/collard/turnip greens, spinach, romaine, choy

2 tablespoons olive oil

30 grams egg white protein powder.

Everything needs to be in balance. You wouldn't, for example, want to do only green smoothies all the time without also eating a wide variety of other veggies like broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, etc. If you're eating a wide variety from a healthful, plant-based diet, your immune system should be so strong, that candida should not be an issue. I don't eat grains very often at all, but I still find plenty of things to eat, like beans, nuts and seeds, and lots of veggies. You can click on the link in my signature for more information, or if you'd like, I can send you a list of easy, healthful recipes. 🙂

I've been wanting to do this since fooooooreeever but I don't know what kind of blender to get. Recommendations? I don't want some random cheap one that might break down easily, but I don't want a really expensive one either (like above $200 or so).

I was just wondering if it tastes really weird to have veggies and sweet fruit together...

I remember my neighbors mom making me and my best friend eat this concoction of vegies like carrots and stuff with apples or w.e...I threw up
