i'm sad to say this, but drinking 2-3 cups of green smoothies almost every day didn't help with my acne even little bit. i did this for 4 months straight. i always used either kale, spinach, or romaine lettuce.

but i do believe that cutting down on my sugar intake does have some effect on my acne.

Aw, I'm so sorry it didn't help! 🙁 How's the rest of your diet, and how many greens would you say you used everyday? 2-3 cups probably didn't contain enough fruit and greens - I tested it out, and for me, I needed to drink at least 4 cups a day to keep my acne away, which was the equivalent of about 2-3 servings of fruit, and about 2 cups of leafy greens (1 large handful). At least you know they are healthy for you regardless, and maybe you could continue them while adding one more serving of fruit and a larger handful of greens? 🙂

hmm thats disappointing, but believable because if this was all you had to do to get rid of acne its so obvious that someone probably wouldve figured it out by now.

im still giving it a shot though.

what was the rest of your diet like?

Well, it *was* all I had to do! 🙂 My acne was mild though (despite that fact that it was leaving behind some scarring), and I although I wasn't eating many fruits and veggies before I started the smoothies, I wasn't eating lots of junk either and was eating very few animal products, especially dairy. I really think the smoothies worked for me, because I was giving my body something I needed. I think my body needed the extra fiber and nutrients from the fruits and greens. However, if the rest of my diet had been poor, who's to say that the smoothies would have still worked for me? I have no doubt that diet is repsonsible for acne - for those of us that are prone to acne, leafy greens and green veggies are our best source for fighting it.

This shit is really working for me, I can't belive it!! I have done this 3 weeks now and my skin looks amazing, I think i've got 3 spots since it started to work and they have been relly small. I have noted that my skin is also healing faster.

Im using sudocrem, dans BP and paulas choice 2% BHA beside it and drinking about 1,5L smoothies everyday. So it's 3 glasses of 0,5L, 1 for breakfast, 1 for lunch 1 for dinner.

Here is my list of what my smoothies contain.

* 2 glasses of water

* 2 carrots OR 1 whole lime

* 3 whole apples

* 1 whole pear (sometimes)

1 handfull of:

* Blueberries

* Strawberries

* Spinach

* Raspberries

* brocolli (sometimes)

It taste good, not excellent but you can drink it without problem.

My acne is almost gone now, some old spots are still healing. But 2 problems is left, my skin gets still oily during the day..but less than before.

The other problem is that I still have black pores, my nose looks terrible if you look really close.

This is something I can live with anyway. It's just a bonus if there is something that can prevent it in the future!

~ Acne Be Gone Fairy ~ What happend with your msn? Never see you there, I would be pleased to talk with you someday. Now while Im still writing I would like to ask you how much you are taking per day? 0,5L, 1L, 1,5L?

To everyone out there, give it a try! I was a little bit sceptic to this before and I don't regret one second that I tried this.

Oh cool!! So happy to hear you're getting such great results!! :) I still drink 3-4 cups a day, but I'm also doing LOTS more veggies than when I started. However, when I first started, 3-4 cups a day (about 2 cups of leafy greens and 2-3 servings of fruit) were all I needed to keep my skin clear. :)

Sorry I haven't signed on MSN yet!! I've been incredibly busy lately. However, I will sign on right now and see if you are on! If not, I will try another time. :)

never noticed this thread, interesting how your able to absorb more by blending.

I'll give it a shot, maybe not as hardcore as some are; should still be effective at one cup a day.

Glad you're going to give it a try! 🙂 Honestly though, I'm not sure that one cup a day will be enough to make a big difference. My first 6 weeks of introducing the smoothies to my diet, I did about 7-8 cups a day, because I really wanted to saturate my body with good nutrition. So in those 7-8 cups, that equaled about 2-3 cups of greens (about 2 oz. by weight I'm guessing). Half of that might have been effective enough though, because to maintain my clear skin, I just drink about 4 cups a day. The main thing is to make sure you have at least one good handful of leafy greens in your drink and at least 2 servings of fruit. Hope it works out for you! 🙂

i'm thinking of investing in an oscar juice extractor, because its ideal for extracting juice from leafy greens. i already have a power blender to make smoothies with. however, it does'nt blend greens veggies well. any other suggestions or advice?

^ I use a Vita-Mix blender. It's top of the line and does a great job! For juicing, the Green Star juicer is known to produce the best quality juice. If you're using it daily though, it can take about 15-20 minutes to clean. However, you can get glass canning jars (the old fashioned looking ones), pour in your juice up to the fill line, cover the with the metal topper, and then use a Food Saver machine to suck out all the air so that your juice will stay fresh longer. It makes your juice last 3-4 days. If you're looking to clear your skin, green cruciferous veggies, as said below, would be your best bet. 🙂

Dr. Fuhrman, who I mentioned in the first post, says that leafy greens are extremely important when it comes to clearing acne. Here's a quote of his:

"The number one priority is nutrient density in your skin. To increase the phytonutrients in your skin have two to four ounces of green cruciferous juice a day, mixed in some other juice such as carrot/strawberry.

Then have 6 ounces of raw greens, mixing kale, organic spinach and lettuce smoothie.

Also consume a daily bowl of a green-based soup with broccoli rabe, bok choy, collards and other dark greens cooked into the soup base. You can eat raw nuts, but not more than two ounces with any one meal. You can eat fresh fruit, but not more than 2-3 fruit equivalents with any one meal.

Try to sweat as much as possible and of course, eat when hungry and do not overeat.

If you do all this your hormonal peaks will diminish in 2 or 3 months and your skin will make great strides."

Acne Be Gone Fairy,

thanks for keeping this post running. everytime i see it popping up it inspires me to keep trying the green smoothies. this time i'm really planning on sticking with them. i've done it 2 days in a row now!

one especially tasting fruit that i've tried in my smoothies (and you normally wouldn't even think of this i bet) was canteloupe. it's delicious. i paired it up with another fruit, can't remember if it was a banana or strawberries but it was really good. And I had a question for you Acne Fairy--i know you dont add any juices to your smoothies, just water, but if i like to do so, what do you recommend is the healthiest, least sugary juice to add?

I'm glad you want to give the smoothies a good try! 🙂 It's great that you're experimenting with different fruits to see what you like. I actually can't eat canteloupe - it gives me bad stomach pains for some reason, but melons can be odd fruits and many say they should be eaten alone, but it's great that you can eat them with other fruit!

I'm a little more accepting of juices these days. 🙂 I still think they should be kept to a minimum though, but I don't see anything wrong with maybe adding juice from an orange (they can be quickly juiced with a small, citrus juicer) or a grapefruit. Careful with the orange though - many say they promote acne. You could even add a little carrot juice if you like (or just add a few baby carrots to your smoothies!). I use carrot juice in my veggie soups quite a bit. I think the main thing is to just not drink the juice alone - if you're combining it with greens and fiber, I think it's fine to have now and then. 🙂

I would ask your doctor, as sometimes certain foods are off-limits with certain medications. However, I believe doing the smoothies would be just fine. The Vitamin A in smoothies is in the form of beta-carotene, which then gets converted to Vitamin A when ingested. You can not overdose on Vitamin A when it comes from beta-carotene. Since you are on Accutane, I especially think you could benefit from the smoothies. 🙂

Thanks for the reply. I think adding baby carrots would be an excellent idea actually! I'll have to try that soon. I searched and searched Walmart's juice aisle for the least sugary juice and came up with lite apple juice with just 14g of sugar versus some "natural" apple juices that contained up to 48g! yikes...as far as the oranges, i'm pretty darn certain my acne is hormonal and i've gone a long time w/o eating them and not noticed a reduction in acne 🙁

do you think the green smoothies helps balance out hormones?

well, i'm on the bandwagon, made my first today. blended a cup of baby spinach, watercress and rocket, an apple, banana, half a papaya, tablespoon of flax seeds and two glasses of water. not great, but definately drinkable.

i have tried it before, but gave it up after a while because it tasted horrible. the problem was that i made it with greens only, and you can only handle so much (unaware of this message board).

currently i'm acne free because i'm taking accutane, but i've been on several courses and know by now that after i stop taking the pills, give a month or two, the acne is back. i still have 2 months worth.

i'm really hoping that this will work, together with the fish oil and flax seeds.

do you think the green smoothies helps balance out hormones?

Does the apple juice you bought contain artificial sweeteners, like aspartame? If so, you want to avoid that and stick with all natural.

I do think the smoothies can help to balance out hormones! Here's a quote from Dr. Joel Fuhrman on balances hormones:

"The number one priority is nutrient density in your skin. To increase the phytonutrients in your skin have two to four ounces of green cruciferous juice a day, mixed in some other juice such as carrot/strawberry.

Glad you're liking the smoothie okay! The more you experiment with them, the more you'll like them, as you'll discover what combos taste good to you and which ones don't. 🙂

If you want to rely on diet for your skin, I recommend lots and lots of greens - they are the most important food to include in your diet when it comes to acne - and probably most diseases as well! It's pretty easy to get them in with green smoothies, blended salads, blended in soup bases, and salads. See the quote above (indented) on the role greens play with hormones and skin.

day two and going strong, had about four glasses of super green today, i prefer to make them fresh every time, two glasses at a go. its a fantastic way to make sure you get your veggies, seeing as i don't like to eat them. at night, in addition to leafy greens and fruit, i add brocolli. have'nt noticed any digestive problems thus far when mixing veggies with fruit.

i have a braun blender and its works very well.

i know its a bit soon, but my skin had more colour today and i felt really good.

Lilo, how wonderful that you're enjoying the smoothies so much!! I love that they make it so easy to get in your veggies!! I often do two smoothies a day - I always do a green smoothie for breakfast, and then for lunch, I'll often do a "blended salad" with no fruit, just greens and veggies. I'll then eat steamed veggies or a veggie soup for dinner. Now that I'm eating so many veggies, my skin has gotten more color to it (and it's *not* due to getting more sun!), and I actually had to get a darker concealer color! Back when I first started the smoothies though, my four cups of smoothie a day was about all the veggies I was getting, and that was still enough to make a huge difference in my skin! 🙂

how much carrots are you consuming a day and how often? the color may be due to the beta-carotene in the the carrots --> it has been known to turn skin a few shades darker if you drink too much. the color is harmless...you may just look like you tanned so be careful! 😀

I checked the apple juice I'm using, no weird artifical sweetners or anything! :cool:

I made a delicious smoothie last night too! Here's what I used:

-handful of spinach leaves

-frozen mixed fruit (melons,grapes,peaches)

-3 strawberries

-1/4 orange

-plain yogurt

-little bit of apple juice

-1 scoop vanilla flavored whey protein

YUMMY!

Actually, I haven't eaten many carrots lately at all! haha That's a good guess, but the carotenoids in green veggies can give your skin color too! I didn't know that until I really got into eating lots of vegetables! 🙂 Luckily, my skin doesn't look orange, just healthy. I tried my old concealer the other day, and it looked pasty on my skin, because it was way too light! haha

Sounds like a great smoothie!! If you're struggling with acne still though, you might want to consider going off dairy products for a while and see how you do. 🙂

Carrots blend fine for me, but I have a powerful Vita-Mix. I don't put carrots in my green smoothies - I do occasionally add them if I'm doing a "blended salad" though. Focusing on just the leafy greens in your smoothies is perfect. 🙂
