Could you tell me if you cook the greens (spinich, kale, collards) before you add them?

No, just add them raw. If you give them a whirl, I hope you like them! Welcome to the boards!! 🙂

Mmm.. just made a great combination, I think it'd be great for someone just starting green smoothies who isn't quite used to the taste yet. (which is my case)

2 bananas, cut into 1/4's

1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries

1-2 handfuls of romaine (I tried to make it about a 70% fruit, 30% green mixture because I'm still not one to like greens, hopefully that changes with time though)

1 1/2 cups of water

1/4 tsp cinnamon

Blend throughly, and viola!

I drank green smoothies for two years. Stopped last year. There was NO difference in my skin at all! If anything it was worse on the smoothies.

You could just be coincidently breaking out.

A zit takes about 2 weeks to surface, so this breakout could just be a bunch of blemishes that had been surfacing for the past 2 or so weeks.

That sounds like a great recipe! Yeah, it's definitely good to start out slowly with the greens and acquire a taste for them. I have gotten to where I'm been doing about 70% greens to 30% fruit lately, and I love it! 🙂 At first though, I needed a LOT of fruit!

Aww, Pandaboy I'm so sorry! sad.gif I really hope you'll continue them strictly for at least a few more weeks though - you really should give them at least 6 weeks at the very minimum, so you really haven't been doing them long enough yet. It took me a little over 4 weeks before I noticed that I suddenly wasn't getting any new blemishes. I hope they'll work out for you. smile.gif

Yes but you'd think that if it were to work I would have seen at least some improvement by now. So far there has been NO IMPROVEMENT which discourages me. I take it that when you said it took 6 weeks before u noticed that breakouts stopped, that your skin GRADUALLY improved as opposed to . . . 6 weeks later and bam no breakouts. I.T. did you see any improvements at all after the 4 week stage?

I know this is a super long thread but I really don't think that many people have seen that much improvement (unless of course everyone who was cured are not posting anymore).

Yeah, I think the case with most people on these boards is that when they find something that works for them, they never bother coming back to encourage others. There are definitely several very positive posts mixed in this thread though.

I wish I remembered exactly how my skin cleared up and whether or not it was a gradual thing. I just remember that a little after a month, I stopped getting new bumps. Dr. Fuhrman (link on the first page) says it can sometimes take the body 6 months before changes are seen. You don't have anything to lose by continuing for another couple of weeks except for better health. Good luck.

hi IT!

right now, i make 4 cups of smoothie in the morning, drink about 2 cups and leave the rest to drink in the afternoon. i refrigerate it. my mom noticed i was doing this and told me that once vegetables and fruits have been broken down into some form other than their original form, the nutrients in the veggies/fruits starts decreasing because of something to do with the interaction with oxygen (don't know exactly).

what do you think about this?

Hi K_chocolat! I have heard this many times about oxidation and do believe there is much truth to it, and I have been concerned about it as well. I do think it's most beneficial to drink it right away, but that's not always practical, and I don't think a few hours is enough to decrease the nutrients too greatly. (I wish I knew more specifics!) I've recently been making mine fresh everyday, but half the time, I was drinking day old smoothies, and they still kept my skin clear. If you can drink them fresh, then do that, but if not, just do whatever you can to make it work. I see it as this... A smoothie that's a few hours old is better than no smoothie at all. 🙂

You're welcome! 🙂 That sounds like a good plan - I've been doing that a lot lately. I've stopped using frozen fruit as well, because it's hard for me to drink the smoothies really fast when they're freezing cold!

Yes!! I hate that!! haha I think I'll continue to get the frozen fruit, but I'll let it thaw out in the fridge first.

What kind of blenders are you all using?

I'd like to know too, because my blender just broke.

Will a juicer be just as good? Or will it break down the nutrients too far?

I use a high powered Vita-Mix. You can find them used on eBay.

You want to use a blender, because they leave the fiber, unlike juicers, which seperate the juice from the fiber and pulp, and you want all that stuff! 🙂

I'd like to start trying to do this! Couple of questions, I apologize if they've been answered before, but sifting through over 30 pages of posts is a lot!!

I'm noticing a lot of differences in how much people drink per day, whether or not to store it and drink later, or tomorrow.... typically, how much do you recommend to make when you are just starting out? I have very mild acne (hooray, finally! Just 2 small pimples and a lot of red hyperpigmentation that's slowly fading) so I'm not sure that I need to do 6-8 cups. Leaving it in the fridge overnight is fine?

Why do you say not to store the leftover smoothie in a plastic container? Is it b/c of a nasty plastic taste?

Does anyone bring this on the go? I'm usually rushed in the morning, trying to get to work on time, so I'd like to blend and leave!! Can anyone recommend a good thermos, bottle, etc?

Thanks!!!

Hi! Don't blame you for not wanting to look through 30 pages!! haha My acne was mild when I started the smoothies, and I did 6-8 cups (2 handfuls a day) the first 4 weeks. That may not have been necessary though, as I cut back to just 1 large handful a day, and that was enough to keep the acne away. You may want to try one a day and see if that works for you. It's best if you can drink them fresh, but leaving them in the fridge is fine, and for many, much more convenient than having to make fresh smoothies daily. Plastic is toxic, so that's why I recommend not using it, as I have read that plastic molecules can seep into food/drinks, etc. Good luck with them! 🙂

Yea!!!! That's really great to hear! 🙂

I don't use ACV very often, but I probably should - it's great stuff!! I see no problem with using it along with the smoothies. 🙂

hi IT

maybe i asked you this already, but how was your acne before? mild/moderate/severe?

also, did you acne previously improve when you've started eating healthier before starting with the smoothie?

Hi! My acne was mild, but I usually averaged 2-4 blemishes on my chin at any given time, and I had several tiny little bumps on my forehead. Despite eating healthy, I still had acne. After the smoothies, my forehead and chin cleared up. 🙂

Okay so I just made my first one this morning. i used the recipe that "little did he know" suggested...except I did 2 cups of water:

2 bananas, cut into 1/4's

1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries

1-2 handfuls of romaine (I tried to make it about a 70% fruit, 30% green mixture because I'm still not one to like greens, hopefully that changes with time though)

1 1/2 cups of water

1/4 tsp cinnamon

it was AMAZING!! thanks for the recipe idea!!

it made about 4 cups. Is this how much you should drink per day? Do you think drinking 2 cups a day is too little to get the green smoothie benefits?

Yeah, that's the same recipe I give on the front page and what's great about it, is you can switch out different fruits and greens, even spices, to give different flavors. I'm currently drining more of a 70% greens, 30% fruit mixture, but when you first start out, it's definitely best to do mostly fruit! So glad you liked it! I find the greens taste even better when I add spices like turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. and add onion - yum! 🙂
