Today I put a full 12oz of spinach in my smoothie :)

Stevia works wonders for adding more greens yet not compensating taste.

Awesome! I haven't yet tried stevia to compensate for the greens so I can add more - I will though. Thanks for the tip.

I just made another one.

I used one apple (skin on) a small bit of OJ, a couple ounces of water, a bit of banana (had to share it with my boys), a large handful of romaine lettuce leaves, a small handful of kale, and a dash of spring mix salad. It wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't go so far to say it was good, lol. But, I"m full, that's what counts.

Is it possible to drink too much of this?

Not really :)

Since greens are so low in calories yet so high in nutrients, you'd have an absurd amount to get too many calories. Although you could overdose on the fruit, like eating 10 pieces of fruit in a day. Like it's been stated before, nutrients like iron and vitamin A, though harmful if taken to excessive amounts from animal products, are generally harmless when taken to excess in plant products.

By the way whats up with the anorexic model in your sig?

Glad you made another one! Sounds like you had quite a bit of greens in there, so I think at least 1 or 2 more servings of fruit would have made it taste better. Sweet fruits, like pineapple, mangos, peaches, etc. really make a difference when you add them, and they are very convenient to add when you buy them frozen. You might also try adding some honey and cinnamon. 🙂

<quote> Cut 2 pieces of fruit (apples, pears, bananas, plums, etc) into 8ths

Throw in 2 large handfuls of greens

Add about 1 cup of frozen fruit Optional (tropical fruit mix, pineapples, mangoes, raspberries, etc.) Whole Foods has a great selection.

About 4 cups of water (Be sure to add enough so its drinkable).

Add flavorings Optional (Cinnamon, honey, etc.)

Blend ingredients</quote>

So if one blending give you enough for 2 days, and you drink 4 cups a day, you make 8 cups at a time, right? So that make 2 large handfuls of greens, =1 large handful per day. So basically, it doesn't really matter how much volume we drink everyday, as long as we are getting about 1 handful of greens, and about 1 cup of fruits?

Excellent question! Yes, the main thing is to be getting one large handful of blended greens a day and a couple servings of blended fruit.

Adding a bit of frozen berries (no added sugar) works so excellent, I know this was mentioned before but my sis just made a smoothie and added some frozen berries and its the best one thus far. MMM!!!!!!

Thanks!

I made one yesterday with parsley and spinach, and I personally liked it but my husband almost gagged =(

Could you give me a recipe for a smoothie you made to your brother that he loved and couldn't tell had greens in it?

Thanks!

It's been a while, but let's see... The best tasting one I made for him.... I think I used 1 apple, and 1 banana, one regular sized handful of spinach (I find spinach to have the mildest taste), about 1 cups of frozen pineapple (a very sweet fruit) and half a cup or frozen raspberries. I also added honey and some cinnamon. It turned out to look like a light pink smoothie - he had no clue there was spinach in it. LOL It wasn't a lot of spinach, but at least it was in there. He won't drink my smoothies anymore - he says they make him feel weak and light-headed - probably because the ones I made for him didn't have enough greens to balance out all the fruit sugar. Pears, peaches and mangos are great to use as well. Just go easy on the greens, use baby greens (they are the most nutritious and also have the mildest taste), and always add some sort of dark colored fruit like raspberries, blueberries, etc.

I love adding frozen berries to mine as well! GREAT signature by the way! 🙂

I know it says to use a high powered blender, but would a hand blender work?

The reason I ask is that is all I have, but I could head to Giant Tiger and get one for $20 if i really need to (I would have to walk with it :P)

Try what you have and see how you like it first. The point of blending is so that the greens and fruits get thoroughly blended so that the cellular walls get broken down more thoroughly and more nutrition is released. You want it to have a smoothie consistency. Welcome to the boards! 🙂

Well, I just made my 1st smoothie. 1 cup frozen mangos, 2 cups water, 1 handful organic greens.

The Verdict!...

It tasted like a leaves with water. I added some honey into it but it didnt help. I could barely get past a few sips. Did I do it right?

Here is the prewashed organic field greens stuff I used:

Baby Lettuce (red and green romaine, red and green oakleaf, lollo rosa, tango) baby spinach, red and green chard, mizuna, arugula, fris©e, radicchio.

Its good in a salad though :)

You need another serving of fruit in there! Try adding something like an apple, pear or banana. 🙂

My advice would be , try the basic recipe (apple and or pear + greens + frozen fruit + water) and experiment with that .

The combination Apple/Pear/Kale/Frozen raspberries + water is delicious , it's all about finding the right proportions of each element.

My first one wasn't really jummie but after some experimenting i'm quite able to make a very OK smoothie =)

Great advice. Just keep experimenting. Like Quinten, I had made some nasty tasting smoothies in the beginning too. LOL

Yeah - you need to experiment. I have found a really good basic one I like - 1 apple, 1 banana, juice of half a lemon and as a couple of handfuls of mild greens (baby spinach is good). I defy anyone to dislike the result ...

EDIT: Sorry that should have read juice of half a LIME. Lemon might taste ok too though - I've just never tried it!

A new recipe idea for the more savoury-oriented, 'mature' palates out there :-) If you like the drink Bloody Mary, then maybe this is for you. Well, I love it anyway!

Tomato juice

Handful of kale

Small piece of ginger

Lots of lemon and lime juice

Parsley

Water

It comes out an unappetising-brown colour, because of the green kale and red tomato juice, but it tastes great! I also like spinach, fresh tomatoes, cucumber and yoghurt.

Hey, I know this has been asked before, but just for an update, who has had success with this? Can you post and just say yes or no? I'm on week one and need inspiration!

Wow, Katie! For your first week, you should be proud of that recipe! It sounds GREAT! Thanks for sharing it. If you scroll back through the last few pages, you'll find several glowing testimonies. 🙂 Think of how great this is for you health wise - that alone is worth doing it for. I hope you see improvement with your skin though as well. Good luck! 🙂

Ah thanks, independent thinker! I feel all bashful, like the teacher has given me a gold star! :D Today, I've added an apple to that tomato juice recipe, which is really good too. I can imagine celery would taste good in it too.

Yes, I am going to continue this whatever happens, as it can only be beneficial - in so many ways. But I'm also going to look back through these posts for acne testimonies as that's the thing I really want to get better more than anything else, and I need inspiration!

Aw, that's cute! haha I bet an apple would taste great in there. Apples blend really well with other foods, and they are so sweet.

Is your diet fairly healthy as it is? If so, I think by adding the smoothies, you will definitely see improvement. If you want to jumpstart things, I would try drinking about 6-8 cups a day for the first month. I know it's a lot, but that's what I did my first month. Once I started seeing improvements, then I went down to only 4 cups a day.

Keep us informed, and I'm here to help! 🙂

I'm not sure about cups - is that as in the american measuring system? - but I reckon I've been drinking about 1 1/2 to 2 pints a day. Kind of enjoy it. I'll keep you updated on my progress

Ah! You're from England!! I love England. I have been fortunate enough to have gotten to spend some time there. I hope to go back one day!

Ok, 4 cups is equal to 2 pints. So, you should be aiming for at least 2 pints a day, but you could aim for about 4 pints a day for a month of so if you want to speed things along. 🙂 Cheers! 🙂

Has anyone considered using microgreens for green smoothies? They are harvested before they are mature, which apparently makes them taste better and contain higher percentages of vitamins and minerals. I added a handful of microgreens into my smoothie this morning and it tasted really good. Maybe someone (*cough* RS *cough*) might be able to provide some more info.

If any of this is true, it would be good for people who find it hard to tolerate the greens as you would need to use less greens to get the same effect.

I made a smoothie this morning and shared half of it with my husband. It was so funny, he drank it but he cringed, and then went and rinsed his mouth out!

For the amount they cost (they run spendy where I live, and hard to find), I don't know if you'd be getting a good deal for the amount you would need. I've had them before but not in a smoothie.

I stick to spinach, kale and lettuce. Spinach has the second highest number of antioxidants compared to the ORAC scale and the most mild taste, and I believe the most chlorophyll (which is the cleansing part of greens). Kale has the highest ORAC rating for antioxidants but it can taste stronger. Either way if you can get past that, there's a lot of unique antioxidants that aren't in other greens (things that you would find in broccoli, cauliflower, etc.). Lettuce isn't that special compared to the two others but it does have a good amount of chromium I believe. Just stick to the baby greens!

Are watercress and alpha sprouts considered as leafy greens?

What about from the herb family like parsley, corriandar and basil? Are these more used to flavour or can I put handfuls of these to get the same benefit as other leafy greens mentioned?
