I read thru some of the thread, but I have a few questions, sorry if they've been asked
Is romaine hearts good to use?? And is it bad to add some soy milk? Also do you need to drink these with nothing else in your system so it digests better, like just drink in between meals, or can you have it within 30 minutes of something else? I like smoothies so I will give it a go, thanks for the tip!
Romaine hearts would be just fine - just be sure to use a variety of leafy greens. Soy milk would be fine to add as well - I don't know that I would add it everyday though. As a general rule, it's always optimal to eat fruit/leafy greens alone, so yes, I'd try to do them on an empty stomach (30 min. before eating) if you can, but as for the benefits, I think it mainly just matters that you get your greens in at some point in the day. 🙂
Does anyone own a high-end blender? I was thinking of buying a Vitamix.
Yes, I own an old 3600 model Vita Mix (you can find it on eBay). It works just fine, and is a LOT cuter than the new ones, as it looks vintage and is stainless steel. The new ones are really pricey.
Well, today is the last day of my second week of Green Smoothies. I've had one literally every day with the equivalent of 2 huge handfuls of greens (usually kale or baby spinach). I've recently been using this smoothie recipe:
1 apple
1 pear
2 kiwis
handful of blueberries
a little juice
the equivalent of 2 large handfuls of greens
I am literally 100% clear of any active acne. I had pretty mild acne before this and had experienced a pretty bad breakout right before I started drinking the smoothies. The only thing keeping my face from being 100% clear is 1 redmark on my forehead from a pimple I got a few days ago.
Now, topically I use alba organics sea lettuce facial cleansing milk with a drop or two of tea tree oil added twice daily. I used to use Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face wash, but found it too irritating (my skin is pretty sensitive). Other than that, I have changed nothing in my regimen except for the smoothies.
My skin looks and feels like normal skin. I have much more energy, a more stable and happy mood, and people tell me I look healthy (I do lift weights 5 days a week, but I've been doing this for close to 8 months now).
I also eat very healthy in general and try my best to avoid sugar, white rice, white bread, and generally any processed food. My diet consists of (lots of) organic free-range chicken, vegetables, and brown rice/whole wheat bread. I eat red meat every few days (usually steak).
I have been drinking more than usual lately (just turned 21) but it doesn't seem to have an adverse affect on my skin (at least yet).
Now I don't want to count my chickens too soon, but I really think this regimen is working for me. Only time will tell, and I will update my progress either way.

I'm so excited for you!!! 🙂 You got some very fast results, and you are doing very well to be consuming 2 handfuls a day (I only do one large handful a day). Thank you so much for sharing your results and keep us informed! 🙂
today i made my second smoothie and it was so yummy!
-frozen banana
-kiwi
-some pineapple
-4 large handfuls of mixed baby greens
-water
the greens taste extremely mild. i would've added more but i ran out! =(
i suppose if i used kale though, it wouldn't taste so good. lol
but now i need to go grocery shopping for more fruits and greens =P
I am going to try this tomorrow =)
I do think that if it doesn't do much for my acne, it will be beneficial anyway for my overall health.
But on the link where Victoria Boutenko talks about Green Smoothies, I do not think that she really gives good arguments to one of the questions, the one about chimpanzees and their low life expectency etc.
But this aside, it doesn't matter, I still think it's a great idea!
Thanks!
V.
Awesome - let us know how it goes for you!
I love the part about the chimpanzees and how their DNA is so much like ours. I don't know why Victoria didn't address the fact that their diet is mostly leafy greens and fruit. They'll actually grab a banana and then wrap it in a leafy green before eating it. 🙂

Wow! 4 handfuls is great!! 🙂 If you use kale, don't use the stems - they are extremely course!
Is there a way to make Green Smoothies hot, or at least warm? I have an intolerance to cold drinks (it's more of a mental issue than a digestive issue).
Sure! 🙂 I would use room temperature fruits. You could add warmed up water as well (just don't warm your water in the microwave - can be dangerous) If you are using a Vita-Mix or a high powered blender, the heat from the motor will warm your drink the longer you blend. Actually, I find that when I don't use frozen fruits in my smoothies, my smoothies end up being at about room temperature. Is that warm enough, or do you want warmer? If you want warmer, you could always pour the mixture into a pot and warm it on the stove. Since you do like warm, you may want to consider an all veggie green smoothie. You could puree things like leafy greens, tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic, onions, etc. Blend until slightly warm, or warm up on the stove. Does this help any? 🙂
Hi ,
First of all i would like to thank IndieThinker for this great piece of advice , i allready was a healthy person but i feel that adding green smoothies to my daily "diet" has improved my overall health.
It was also a good excuse to up my daily intake of greens.
I don't have severe acne but thanks to the smoothies i avoid the odd pimple popping op (let's say i'm 99% clear of active acne) , i just look and feel better overall (people telling me i'm lookin' healthy and good) , my face feels realy smooth and my (not so bad) redmarks are fading.
Also when i get a little wound it heals so fast.
I have been doin' the smoothies for about 3 months , not always as i should but what the heck nobody's perfect. I try to do it as close to 100% as i can during the week (healthy lifestyle - water - enough sleep - green smoothies - low on sugars - fruit - low on grains - ...) and in the weekends , mostly saturdays i "take a day off" meaning i don't think that much about what i'm eating , if i feel like havin' a biscuit or something like that i eat that without much remorse . And when i go out on saturday nights i have some coke's or alcohol .
This one day "off" realy helps , it doesn't mean that i will eat as much biscuits and candy and chips as i can but i'll have one or two if i feel like it.
Because i feel so healthy i'm having a realy positive attitude , i'm open , sociable , i laugh alot . Girls notice me when i go out and start flirt with me , my sister even said here friends tought i was cute =)
You got to look at the overall picture , one 'small' change in your daily life can have such a possitive effect on other things.
When my acne was a bit worse i was ALSO an open person and sociable and ... but now i'm feeling so much more confident of myself.
I must say i never realy had severe acne but my motto is if you want something , go get it . I did and it feels damn fine !

What an awesome post!!!! I'm glad you're doing so well with the smoothies and that you're enjoying life. Great advice you gave! 🙂
I think it would be a great idea to create a new topic with only green smoothies recipes (with measurements and all). The only things allowed would be recipes and what people thought of them. Every week, we could summarize all the comments and add them below the recipe, so that we don't end up with tons of posts, and several pages to weed through. Comments about acne could go to this post instead. What do you think? I could help with summarizing etc.
Also, I did my first green smoothie yesterday. It didn't taste great, but it was very drinkable.
First, I think I added too many greens. I had 2 salad hearts (1 romaine and one hydroponic) that were going to be thrown out, so I chopped them and added them to the blender with a small handful of organic spinach. I added 1 chopped apple, 1 banana, quite a lot of frozen blueberries, a bit of honey, a bit of coconut, a small cup of water and orange juice. I got about 4 cups of liquid, which I put in two glasses that I closed with a lid (they were jam jars originially). So now, I have 1 and my husband has one too.
It tasted pretty good, but I could definitely taste the lettuce in there. So next time, less greens...
I will drink half in the morning, and half this afternoon, to get benefits throughout the day.
Thanks!
A recipe post would be cool, but I think you have to be a moderator to condense other people's post into one. I'm guessing that more than half of the posts under this thread are recipes if you're looking for more ideas. I just stick to the basic fruits - a couple apples, pears, bananas, etc - add in some frozen fruit like pineapple, raspberries, blueberries, mangos, tropical fruit mix, berry mix, and then a couple large handfuls of greens - and of course, some water.
Yes, I think you'll like your smoothie better with less greens! Let us know how your next one is! 🙂
anyone here tried using Chinese broccoli/Chinese kale? it tastes weird like ginger, some cooked meat or something good for cooking. i wonder if it's as good as the more common type of kale. i dont like the taste. the fruits stayed sweet but the leaves just add that weird taste. just wanted to share.

Yes I was wondering if you had to be a mod, or if the person who started the post could do it as well.
Oh well... It's not a big deal.
Yeah, I'm not able to alter anyone's posts - great idea though! 🙂
I'm just wondering.... But all the people who are drinking this those who have and haven't seen any results. Whats your diet like ?
Mines fairly healthy but I tend to slack a bit as I have done recently. Nothing to excess lol but just the odd chocolate bar here and sweet there and crisps. Over all its not too bad. I wake up every morning drink green tea and oats and usually have chicken for lunch or some kind of pie but meh.
Would it help speed it up, if i stuck to an uber strict healthy diet ? Or would I still see results by merely drinking the greenie drink.

Excellent question. It sounds to me like your diet is plenty good enough to experience good results. If you were eating fast food everyday, then you'd have a concern. My diet is healthy as well, but only about 80% - I eat chocolate now and then, cookies, popcorn with butter, and I'll go out to eat 3 or 4 times a month and eat whatever I want then as well.
i recently tried the green smoothie, and in 3 days i had horrid acne, and severe headaches and diahrea.......i don't know if maybe i was detoxing, or dying......so i stopped because the breakouts were very bad, but i did have a little more energy......
Oh, I'm sorry to hear your acne flarred up!! 🙁 That doesn't seem to be a common reaction, but it is very possible that you could have been detoxing. If you can handle the break out and don't think they'll leave behind scars, I'd go ahead and continue with the smoothies. As for digestion, it may just be that your body isn't used to so much fiber. I would start again by maybe just doing 1 or 2 cups a day and then gradually build up from there. Let us know how you're doing. 🙂
I am seriously thinking of starting on green smoothies. I am a vegetarian college student (who doesn't get enough fruit/veggies). I eat bananas and drink orange juice, and eat salads when I can, but green smoothies sound like a more convienient an inexpensive way to get all my needed veggies.
My question is: What are good sweet fruits to add to the smoothie (frozen and fresh)?
I have a huge sweet tooth and would like to make something that is naturally sweet. I hear mangos are good, but I have not had the oppertunity to try one (although i probably will now lol). I like coconuts, do they count as a fruit? I will pobably add honey also.
I appreciate any help that is given.

I'm glad you want to try the smoothies - I think you'll find you love the convenience of them, and the fruits/greens added to your already healthy diet will bring lots of great benefits - and hopefully to your skin as well! 🙂
As R.S. said, tropical fruits, bananas and pineapples are great, and the frozen fruit mix that Ariventa mentioned would be good too. I like starting with a base of apple, pears or bananas. These are all sweet fruits. For extra sweetness, I add frozen fruits of pineapple, mango, peaches etc. Pineapple to me gives the most sweetness - it's kind of like adding pure sugar. Frozen mangoes are great as well. I think a handful of raspberries taste really good with the pineapple. Frozen fruits are great, since they're already washed and diced, and in some cases, are much cheaper as well. Since you're in college, you'll want convenience. Apples, pears and bananas are all very quick to cut up and throw in the blender. Bagged greens are great, because you just open the bag, grab a couple handfuls and throw them in. You can then throw in some frozen fruit, water, and any flavorings like honey, cinnamon, vanilla, etc. and you're good to go. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and good luck! 🙂
I have the fruits down but what kind of good greens should I use? I mean drinking this everyday will take up a lot of greens and I'll probally drink about 16oz a day.
Is there somewhere I can mixed leafy green mix like Costco or something?
Yes, actually, Costco is an excellent place to buy organic greens! They have the best prices I have seen anywhere. I like using baby spring mix, because it's a good variety of greens. Baby romaine and baby spinach are good as well. The pre-washed greens will be more expensive than fully grown heads of lettuce that you must wash and cut yourself.
I'm not sure that you'll see improvements just doing 2 cups a day, but it's certainly better than nothing. You could see how that works for you and then perhaps you might want to add more to your daily diet down the road. Good luck! 🙂
How many ounces do you drink per day?
32 oz, 4 cups. 🙂
You guys have inspired me to make some smoothies. I've made two so far, they're not bad. I definitely don't eat enough fruits and veggies, I'm hoping this will help my overall health, and if my skin gets less acne-prone, then fabulous!
That's so great! When I first started the smoothies, they were purely for health reasons - clear skin was a wonderful surprise. I had heard they could clear acne, but I wasn't expecting it to work for me, haha - I was certainly glad to be wrong!! I hope they work for you as well! 🙂
