Hey, im back, and i just made my second smoothie:

1 banana, 1 cup of blueberries, 1 good handful of greens, 2 cups of water, honey.

The Verdict!...

This one was ok! I mean, I don't taste the greens anymore. In fact it doesn't have much flavour to it at all! But at least I could drink the 4 cups of it. :) I am hoping when the bananas rippen a little more (they are a little green atm) it will add more flavour. I am also considering to turn the water into chilled green tea, for something extra.

Ahh I don't know! The stuff I made tastes like absolute crap! I'll drink it anyways but I just wish it wasn't so gross!

Here's what I put in the blender:

Banana

Cranberries

Plum

2 cups of water

Handful of spinach

1 whole cucumber

1 orange

How do I make it taste better?

As IndependentThinker and others have said before, use FROZEN fruits! You will notice a substantial improvement in the taste.

Are watercress and alpha sprouts considered as leafy greens?

What about from the herb family like parsley, corriandar and basil? Are these more used to flavour or can I put handfuls of these to get the same benefit as other leafy greens mentioned?

Watercress, yes. Alpha sprouts, I don't think so, but I think it would be fine to include those. Parsley, corriander and basil are all leafy greens that would be great to add to your smoothies. You could make smoothies of just all parsley if you wanted, but because they are herbs, I would mainly just use them as flavorings, or just use them sparingly if you decide to make, for example, an all parsley smoothie. If you add these, you might want to try adding some garlic too - yum! 🙂 I believe these herbs would have the same benefits, in general, as other leafy greens. It's best not to overdue herbs though, so again, just use them sparingly. 🙂

Great! 🙂 Blueberries aren't considered a sweet fruit, so if you stick to sweeter fruits, I think you'll have more flavor. Let us know how you like the green tea if you decide to try that!

Aw, sorry. 🙁 Good for you for drinking it anyway though!! Ok, oranges and cranberries are not sweet fruits, and cranberries can actually be quite bitter if not sweetened. So, I think if you stick with sweet fruits like apples, pears, bananas, pineapple, mango, peaches, etc. you'll find that the smoothies can actually taste quite delicious! I would get a big bag of frozen pineapple, mangos and peaches and start adding those to give your smoothies some extra kick. Look at the original recipe on the first post. Try to stick to that for a while and see how it goes. 🙂

Thanks! Yes, frozen fruits are a quick and easy way to add extra flavor. I often find them to be cheaper too for some fruits like berries, etc.

Thanks! 🙂 Wow, sounds like you made an all veggie smoothie! Cool! A little tomato and garlic would probably be really good with that too! Are you going to try one with just fruit and leafy greens as well?

I agree with you about the "drinkable" aspect of the smoothies - I love that I can just quickly drink down my fruits and greens for the day! haha

Did you miss me? :P

1 banana, 1 cup of blueberries, 1 good handful of greens, 2 cups of water, honey.

I replaced the water with chilled green tea, it didn't do anything to the taste, but did give a little extra boost of energy, and it has even MORE antioxidents. I should be indestructable by now! (and I would believe that if I didnt have acne  ) Also, I am running out of multivitimins, and I take them twice a day. However, since these green smoothies are as nutritious as they say, then I shouldn't need them, right? I will probably take them anyways, but at a lower dose (1 a day). Also ALSO, I heard of something called greens+ ([Edited link out]). It has a bunch of natural stuff to "improve mental health, overall health and well-being." I am interested in trying it, but I am somewhat worried I may be adding to much too. (Greens smoothie with green tea and greens+? WILL I TURN GREEN?!)The fact it comes in flavours that may enhance the taste of the smoothie is nice too. And I may use greens+ multi+ to replace my current multivitamins ([Edited link out]).

Any thoughts on the subject would be nice.

I did miss you! Glad to see you back! hehe You crack me up - bet you feel like Popeye!! hahahahaha The smoothies do provide a lot of nutrients, but to be safe, I'd go with a one a day multivitamin - but one that is safe and well-researched like Dr. Fuhrman's. As for the powdered greens, I have the philosophy that fresh greens are best, but I don't see any harm with adding them to your diet - I just wouldn't replace the green smoothies with it, but you weren't suggesting that anyway.

Are you going to give the green smoothies a good try before going on Accutane? I really hope so!! It sounds like you have the determination to make the green smoothies work! You could even try drinking 6-8 cups a day for the first month (that's what I did) in the hopes of getting faster results. Have you looked into doing cleanses as well? If your acne is severe, you may want to consider that. Even though my acne was leaving behind scars, it was still in the mild category.

I love your signature!!!

Thanks a lot for all your information Ind. Thinker, you really are helpful :)

Well I decided to give this a go, but I must say it didnt taste so good. In fact I couldnt get it all down, I think it was the texture that made it a little gross... so Im getting a new blender, ordered one in yesterday. I will give this another go, but it tasted gross.

Anyway my smoothie was:

- 1 apple

- 1 banana

- frozen blueberries

- 1 handful of Celery top leaves

Another question, can someone please post a closeup picture of kale please?? I have no idea what kale is, I can't find it in the supermarket or anywhere (Im in Australia). Is there another name for kale?? Is it Chinese Brocoli or something?? Help!

Got a blender, made a smoothie...

Some filtered water,

1 Banana

1 half of a big bag of spinach

Some frozen raspberries

It tasted sweet so no problem in drinking it. The color is not so appealing on this one, but I don't care.

I also have bags of frozen blueberries and a bag of frozen mixed fruits, and a bag of 3 romaine hearts. So I should be good for a week of smoothie making.

You're welcome! 🙂 I'm glad you're going to give them a try! It might help if you replace the blueberries (which aren't very sweet) with a really sweet fruit like pineapple, mango or peaches - these are all really convenient to add when they're frozen. For your greens, I'd start with a mild tasting green, like baby spinach, baby romaine, or baby spring mix. You could also add some honey and cinnamon. Be sure you are adding enouch water so it's not too thick. If you use kale, do not use the stems, as they have way too much fiber. Here are pictures of kale: http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=n...sa=N&tab=wi . Hang in there - some of the first smoothies I made were really gross too - I'd force myself to drink them down. haha With more experimentation though, I started making smoothies that tasted great. I'm sure your new blender will help too. Good luck and write back if you have more questions. 🙂

Awesome! Sounds like you're off to a great start! 🙂

Question on saving overnight......

So I made one with this:

1 bananna

large handfull frozen blueberries

1/4 bag baby greens

about 1/4 cup canned peaches ( leftover from dinner)

squirt honey

some water ( not sure how much , just dumped in till smooth enough)

It was really good although a strange purpley brown color. There was enough for 2 tall glasses....one I had for late night snack the other I kept till morning. I put it in the fridge with plastic wrap secured by a rubber band. In the morning it was like jello!!! I kid you not it had jelled up really bad and thick 🙁 Anybody else had this happen too? I just threw it out....should/could I just have put it back in the blender with more water? Any clue why it coagulated?

Hmm.... I've never had one turn to jello. My guess is that maybe it was the canned peaches? Were they in a syrup base? I don't think I would have wanted to drink that either, haha. Try it again without canned fruit - bet it'll be fine. 🙂

Yes, kale is supposed to be one of the most nutritious greens. It's still a good idea to use a variety of greens though with the smoothie. I like the name "boerenkool." 🙂

You probably have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning than you do getting a bad e.coli infection, but I'm no expert. I'm not concerned with that anymore - I love using spinach!

This may be a stupid question but can any leafy green vegetable be safely eaten raw?? I know there are lots of green vegies that are only ever eaten after they have been cooked or steamed but I just to make sure I will not get any bateria infection by trying some different greens raw.

I can get a hold of kale, collards, and chinese cabbage. And what is baby spring mix? Is this what we call over here "gourmet" lettuce leaves? The ones with a mixture of different lettuce leaves such as the purple ones and bitter variety? I assume these have more nutrients than iceberg lettuce?

Thanks again.

I'd rather have a cheap blender.

I put ice in my smoothies because I love cold drinks. Ice dulls the blades over time. The blenders I've had all have four blades, two that bend up and two that bend down. I can sharpen the blades that bend up but it's tougher to get at the blades that are closest to the bearing flange.

Over time, I've come to feel I do just as well with a cheap $30 blender and just replace it every 8~10 months, rather than buy something expensive and try to sharpen the blades.

How do the blades stand up to long term ice crushing?
