All i had in the fridge was an apple and a ton of mixed organic greens, so I threw in about five big handfuls of the greens and blended it with the apple. it was orgasmic. quick too!

That's a lot of greens!! Good for you! 🙂

What is the maximun amount of green we should take? I wonder because I think excess of anything can ultimately be bad for our body. I love the smoothies(even if they aren't doing anything for my skin... yet) and drink a lot so I'm just wondering...

I've been throwing in whatever I have. The taste has been quite different each time.

This time, I put in a tomato, a massive amount of greens, about 1/2 cup of yogurt, one apple, a little ice, some shreaded coconut, several almunds, a little milk, and some water. Holy cow.... it's like the best desert I've ever tasted.

I normally wouldn't put the dairy in but I'm going out of town for a couple of weeks and wanted to clean out the fridge.

Thanks again for putting me onto the green smoothies, IT.

You just stated in another post that you've only been doing the smoothies for 2 weeks - you need to give them at least 6 weeks or longer.

As for nutrients, you can overdose on fat soluble vitamins from eating too many animal products, but as for plant foods - you don't have to worry.

How cool that you are being so creative with them, and I'm SO happy that you are enjoying them so much!!! You are very welcome, but thank YOU for being so nice and positive! 🙂 It is the people like you that make doing this thread so worth it. 🙂

Has anyones skin gotten sooo very dry after doing the green smoothies? My skin is flat, dehydrated, flaking and peeling and my lips are down to raw bleeding. This sometimes happens to me when I eat green veggies.

anyone else? Any idea why?

Wow, Asher, I'm so sorry to hear that!! 🙁 I can't imagine leafy greens being responsible for that - if anything, they should help with that! Perhaps you're detoxing really bad?? Are you getting enough healthy fats and water in your diet? Can anyone help answer this? R.S.? Danny?

okay so i've had the worst day ive had in a while.. i became so upset and fustrated that i threw my apple at the mirror and it shattered it to pieces O_O ugh.. my parents are going to be like. 'what happened to the hall mirror?' ... oh man...

anyways.. i used that apple to make my first green smoothie.. ha. ha. one apple, frozen banana, some pineapple, and 4 handfuls of mixed baby greens, and 4 cups of water. it tasted really mild and made about 6 cups worth. i drank 3 cups and i feel so full O_O i am suprised how u couldn't taste the greens, but then again i couldn't really taste the fruit cuz of all the water. lol

i'll try this out for 6 weeks and prayyyyy that it'll work, and i'll update then.

oh, are certains greens better than others? ie. kale vs. spinach?

Awww, I'm really sorry you're having a bad day! 🙁 I said a prayer for you! I hope things get better. Greens actually have a calming effect, so maybe they'll help with that too. 🙂

Your first smoothie sounds really great! Keep experimenting with the basic recipe until you find what works best for you. I love the frozen tropical fruits like pineapple, manjo, etc. They add a lot of flavor.

I don't know enough about the greens to answer your above question, but I do know that spinach and kale are both excellent. However, it's important to alternate your greens. I like spring mix, because it's a big variety - that's mainly what I use actually.

Good luck with everything, and I hope the smoothies work out for you!! 🙂

I'd just like to thank the person that started this thread. I don't have acne but I never thought to put greens in my smoothies. I can stomache a lot of things so now I have gone to the point where I can only make pure leafy green smoothies. just smoothies and water and oddly enough some cinnamon.

Of course if I want some different vitamins I add in a melon or an apple or whatever but the point is that I love eating fruits in any form but I don't like salads that much. I love veggies when prepared in other ways and eat them all the time but I don't always have the time to do this. Plus it's hard to consume leafy greens in any other form but raw (Things like stamed spinach are exceptions but not common) so now I can get tons of these leafy greens in my diet with minimal time and energy. Plus they are already "chewed" better than I could do myself so I absorb more.

The effects were immediate and profound. I got up in the mornings with less effort, I felt more energized, and I am more happy. Some of this may be a placebo but all the phyto and regular nutrients I am getting in these shakes have to be doing a world of good.

Thanks again! Oh ya, I've ate more kale and chard in the past month than in my entire life and probably more than most people will in thier entire lives. It's fantastic.

I didn't read all 20-some posts on this topic, but no one has mentioned the ready-made green smoothies by Odwalla, Arden's Garden, and Bolthouse Farms. I tried Bolthouse Farms' "Green Goodness" from Whole Foods, and it tasted great-- easy to drink! This is my second day on this brand. I got the liter bottle and drank half of it between last night and today. This stuff does help move the bowels! LOL

Ingredients:

apple juice, pineapple juice, mango puree, banana puree, kiwi juice, spirulina, open cell chlorella, vitamin C, lime juice, zinc sulfite, broccoli, green tea, spinach, barley grass, wheat grass, blue-green algae, echinacea extract, odorless garlic, tamarind puree, dragon fruit juice, lemon biflavonoids, Jerusalem artichoke, Nova Scotia dulce.

Vitamin A -- 120%

Vitamin C -- 105%

Manganese -- 150%

Zinc -- 120%

Above nutrients seem to be helpful in fighting acne based on what I have read on the forum.

Good ingredients, but unfortunately, it's all pasteurized. For this reason, you'll get much better results with the freshly made smoothies - they don't take much time to make. :)

I noticed on the bottle that the product is "flash pasteurized," not completely pasteurized (tunnel pasteurization) and is also "cold room bottled."

After reading about this process, the nutrients are preserved through flash pasteurization and potentially harmful bacteria is killed off. The "cold room" bottling technique prevents contamination issues since the juice is not fully pasterurized.

Has anyone here tried the products which have been flash pasteurized?

Can the fruit be oranges? Oranges are my favorite fruit and I eat them a lot because they have more flavor.

Sure! They're not as sweet as an apple, pear, banana, pineapple, etc. so they may not disguise the greens as well, but try it out and see what you think. 🙂

I just made some with oranges as the fruit. It tastes great! I like it better without apples.

I've only been on the smoothies a few days (I used to be really new guy but changed my name for more pizzaz. lol!)

I find that some fruits like apple and tomato don't have much taste to them. Other fruit like banana has a lot of flavor and can overpower other items in the smoothie.

If you want to try something a little different, you might try some coconut. I stumbled onto it by accident when I was cleaning out the fridge and foundn some fresh coconut meat. It adds a nice tone to a smoothie, if you like coconut.

I have a hunch it wouldn't much matter what you throw in, as long as it's heavily biased toward green roughage. I intend to pick up whatever looks fresh and nice at the grocery store produce section every few days. ... and I'll pick up an 8 pack of my favorite two ply, as well.

I will add that I've been drinking fruit and yogurt smoothies for about three years.

After reading this thread, I'm trying more green roughage and eliminating the dairy.

LOL! Your new name cracks me up. hehe 🙂 Good for you and that's really great advice too! I LOVE fresh coconut meat!! Yeah, I think the may thing is to have plenty of greens and some sort of fruit for fiber. Glad you're on the boards. 🙂

I'd like to add a couple of more items that I've found to be of value.

If you don't like the taste, throw some ice in with the smoothie. I love cold drinks so I always throw some ice in. It knocks the edge off the taste. If it's really bitter, you can smooth it out (so-to-speak) by making it cold. Cold drinks/food have lest taste.

I'll also mention that I have a couple of rubbermaid pitchers which feature built in stir-sticks in the lid. It's a sort of a plunger with a plastic star on the bottom. They only cost a few dollars at the grocery. These pitchers let me make a bunch of it up and then put it in the fridge. It always stratifies so I just mix it with the stick before pouring. It's good for a couple of days that way and it saves a lot of blender cleaning. Also, it's nice to have some smoothie waiting in the fridge whenever you want it.

Those are both excellent ideas! I like my smoothies a little cold too. I love adding frozen fruit.

I also love the idea of always having smoothie in the fridge! 🙂 I wonder about storing them in plastic though. I wish there were better studies letting us know whether or not it's safe to do that. I use glass just in case.

Thanks for the great ideas! 🙂

I read thru some of the thread, but I have a few questions, sorry if they've been asked

Is romaine hearts good to use?? And is it bad to add some soy milk? Also do you need to drink these with nothing else in your system so it digests better, like just drink in between meals, or can you have it within 30 minutes of something else? I like smoothies so I will give it a go, thanks for the tip!

Does anyone own a high-end blender? I was thinking of buying a Vitamix.
