I'm a big fan of using more then enough greens too... one 5oz package of spinach and 2 handfuls of kale make the perfect smoothie when disguised with stevia and the fruit.... yesss.

haha, figures that you would be R.S. 🙂 The other day, I got a bag of organic spring mix on sale for $1!! It was expiring the next day, but of course, I bought it. I made a smoothie yesterday with the entire bag, haha, but I also added two pears, an apple, and a banana... I thought it was going to be way to green, but it was good!

That sounds like a GREAT fruit smoothie!! It's fine that it's not green. When you use the darker fruits like blueberries and raspberries, they wonderfully disguise the color, don't worry. 🙂

It's mainly for inflamed bumps. I was getting bumps that were leaving behind scars, and now I longer get those. I do occasionally break out, but when I do, the bumps are small and usually go away fast. 🙂

I was wondering if you can freeze leafy greens? I sometimes see kale on sale, and it'd be nice to buy a bunch, but I can't eat it all before it goes bad.

Oh good! 🙂 I hope you see lots of improvement! Um... I think I remember that after a couple of weeks, my skin just looked really healthy - like there was a glow to it. It was about four weeks though before I noticed that I was no longer getting those bumps that left behind the scars. I wish I could say for sure when they went away! 🙂

I hear that fresh is always best, but yes, I think freezing your greens would be a great idea! I don't think you really lose that much when you freeze.

I made my second green smoothie yesterday. 1 apple, frozen strawberries and blueberries, two handfuls of baby spinach and this time I added some honey and more water.

I liked the consitency a lot better. My mom helped me make it since i'm sick, and she tasted it and went "Yuck it's bitter, we should add some sugar" and I thought omg the people on the diet forum would freak out if I added sugar in my green smoothie lol. My mom is so cute.

hehe, that's cute, and hey, a green smoothie with sugar is better than no green smoothie at all!! 🙂 For the bitterness, I think you need one more piece of unfrozen fruit to balance out the greens, like an apple, pear, banana, etc. I always use two pieces of fruit for a base, and if I don't add frozen fruit, then I use 3 pieces of fruit. 🙂

i am thinking of trying out this green smoothie due to all the raves but i have some questions:

1) whats the difference if i just EAT the fruits and leafy green separately? i eat fruit everyday.. and although i don't eat kale, i eat handfuls of lettuce (plain) and sometimes some spinach. i dont get how consuming food in SMOOTHIE form makes acne go away.

2) the ratio of fruit to leafy greens seems like its 5:1. wouldn't it be better to have more greens and less fruit? (is it because it would just taste nasty?). isnt too much fruit bad cuz of all the sugar?

I'm glad you're here! 🙂

2. Green smoothies are easy to digest. When blended well, all the valuable nutrients in these fruits and veggies become homogenized, or divided into such small particles that it becomes easy for the body to assimilate these nutrients. So much more so that eating 1/2 a cup of blended greens is equal is eating 2 cups of greens!!

So basically, the blender breaks down the foods much better than simply chewing. Dr. Joel Fuhrman states they are a nutrition powerhouse for this reason.

Yes, the more greens, the better! 🙂 Just experiment and see what works for you. 🙂 I use two very large handfuls with 3 portions of fruit.

1) Easier to digest, and you get more nutrients because the blender is doing way more chewing then you'd have the oppurtunity to do without ending up chewing for half an hour.

2) I agree, people do not use enough greens! I think if you have stevia added, you can tolerate a lot more greens without messing up the flavor. So that's what I do. I add a whole bag of salad (5-6oz) and then a handful or three of kale leaves, on top of cranberries, an apple and a bananna.

ohhh i see. well i will try it out this week but man, i am so exhausted with fighting with my skin i feel like i have energy. haha but i will make them for the heck of it anyways. even though kale tastes like crap.

so is your skin like completely clear from drinking these smoothies? my skin is being sooo weird. i was always breakout prone on my forehead only for many years... nowadays my forehead is clear but the rest of my face is breaking out and its sooo terrible. =(

ps. i love your signature verse =)

what is stevia? is that one of those no-calorie sweeteners? cuz those things arent good for ya... the aspartame and all that.. i think honey would be a better option. or just plugging your nose.

yep, no calorie sweetener. no, it's not bad for you. it's an herb with a long history of use in south america and more recently, three decades of use in japan as a diet soda sweetener. it contains no sugar yet has a sweet taste. perfect in smoothies.

I think I will start to do the smoothie thing. But honestly now, is your face 100% clear from acne since you started this thing?

Do you think adding nuts or seeds to the smoothies would be good?

Fats slow digestion, and protein is necessary with every "meal"

I know what you mean - I used to feel that way as well! You don't have to use kale if you don't like it. I would suggest starting out with a milder tasting green, like baby spinach. Any of the bagged baby greens, like baby romaine and baby spring mix would do well to start out with. Be sure to use sweet fruits like apples, pears, bananas, etc. Frozen pineapple is amazingly sweet!

I used to break out mainly on my chin, and those bumps were leaving behind scars. As long as I drink my smoothies, those bumps never come back. I had tiny little bumps on my forehead as well, and those cleared up. If I do break out anymore, the bumps are really small and usually go away quickly - nothing to fuss over. Acne just isn't a problem for me anymore. 🙂

ps. i love your signature verse =)

Thank you! It's my favorite bible verse. I definitely tlhink it's good to focus on the positive, good things in life, because life is what we make it. 🙂

Do you think adding nuts or seeds to the smoothies would be good?

Some say it's best to eat fruits alone (they're okay with greens though), but honestly, if you add nuts/seeds and it doesn't seem to bother you, then I think it'd be fine and probably a good thing to do! 🙂 You might consider taking a plant based digestive enzyme if you experience problems with digestion.

How often should you rotate the greens?

I mean, what I've been doing is using kale for a few days, then baby spinach for a few days. Would it be better to just buy both and switch it up every day?

Both small indented and raised. I had acne for several years before it started scarring.... so odd.

I think that's fine, but it'd do more than just spinach and kale. Since you're into the heavy greens, maybe some chard as well? You could through in some spring mix (big variety of greens) and romaine as well. Whatever greens you can find, try them out. 🙂
