Hey everyone. I haven't posted here yet but I figured I would since I started making the green smoothies.

The very first smoothie I made was 1 green apple, 1 pear, 2 handfuls of Spring Mix greens, 3 cups of water, and 5 or 6 frozen strawberries. It was completely awful but I choked it down anyways. I realized shortly after that I had picked a batch of fruit that didn't have very strong tastes at all so I went for some fruit with more "kick."

bananas and mangoes are great too. their flavors are strong and sweet.

The second smoothie was a vast improvement. It consisted of 1 red apple, 1 lemon, 1 orange, 2 handfuls of Spring Mix greens, 2 1/2 cups of water, and about 12 raspberries/blackberries. The smoothie was actually red this time as opposed to the sludgy green/brown from the first smoothie. It tasted really good this time!

wow. ive never come up with one that isnt green or brown. 🙁

I would like to make just a plain leafy grean smoothie (no fruits) can someone tell me how much leafy greans and water to mix so that the leafy greens cell walls get broken down?

i'd be sooo worried about the taste. regarding the ratio, i often follow the 3 cups of fruits:2 handfuls of greens:2 cups of water. maybe u can just replace the 3 cups of fruits with 3 more cups of greens?

thanks!!

I did a three day fast like this, I'd just add lots of stevia to sweeten it... And I was using all kinds of things, not just leafy greens. I'd suggest adding atleast one fruit with all the greens, then doing stevia too.

I think I may be using too much kale, my smoothies are looking like something from ghost busters.

I've been using 6 of these leaves per blend. Use my hand as a reference to their size, not my dog, since she is miniature and disproportional.

I mixed with the juice from half a lemon, mango juice from Naked Juice, blueberries and raspberries, and 2 apples. It actually still tastes pretty damn good - I could easily get used to drinking these every day.

I also found this recipe in a thread by Melface2k that looks promising:

Kat's Beauty Detox Elixir Recipe:

You Can make this at home if you have a juicer, or you can have it prepared at a health-food store. I find it helps to give this list of ingredients to the person doin the juicing for easier ordering:

1 3-inch wedge of cabbage

1/2 large beet

A couple bunches of dark greens (parsley, spinach , kale or watercress)

1 large carrot

1unpeeled lemon

A thumb-sized piece of ginger root

Scrub-don't peel- your produce. Then cut everything up and run it all through a juicer. The benefits of this drink are out of this world: Cabbage heals the stomach lining . Been is a terrific blood cleanser and wonderful for the skin. Dark greens are the ultimate detoxifiers and bone builders. Carrots are loaded with skin-, vision- and body -healing caratenoids. Lemon alkalizes the body, and the peel is loaded with bioflavonoids. Ginger improves circulation and digestion.

thanks, maybe two cups of greens and one cup of water? Maybe I should just experienment. I eat fruit all day and enjoy eating rather than drinking fruit, and Im not worried about the flavor, especially if its just salad greens. Cabbage juice on the other hand is VERY hard to stomach.

Is it a health risk to mix fruits and vegetables, or simply an issue of taste?

It's not a health risk, but "some" doctors say it's optiminal to eat your fruits seperately from your veggies. If you're in good health and aren't bothered by combining the two together, then I'd go ahead if that's what you prefer.

I chose Kale because its supposedly the healthiest - I can deal with the taste. I'm planning on making one of these smoothies everyday for breakfast, but I want to make sure I get enough greens every day with a single serving. So is 6 kale leaves excessive? I'm going to start making the smoothies with 2 apples, 1 lemon, and kale, since all are supposedly good at fighting acne. Thanks again.

6 should be fine - just be sure you're getting a variety of greens though and not just kale. Victoria Boutenko, creator of the smoothies, started having problems from doing just kale alone - all greens have low levels of different toxins - that's why you want a variety. 🙂

But am I too heavy on the fruit for the second smoothie? I don't want to throw off the fruit:veggie ratio (if I should even worry about that).

Glad you're doing the smoothies!! I think your second smoothie sounds just fine. 🙂 I don't worry too much about the ratio as long as I get in two large handfuls of greens per 8 cups of smoothie. 🙂

I would like to make just a plain leafy grean smoothie (no fruits) can someone tell me how much leafy greans and water to mix so that the leafy greens cell walls get broken down?

For the cell walls to get broken down, all you have to do is blend. 🙂 Just add enough water so that the greens can be properly blended and drinkable. I'd maybe add fresh lemon juice, onions, garlic... maybe even a tad of apple cider vinegar to make it taste better. Tomatoes would be tasty too. It's great that you eat lots of fruit during the day!

thanks! What kind of problems did Vicoria B. have from eating only kale? Was she eating other fruits/veggies as well?

She's a raw food vegan, so she was eating lots of fruits and veggies. I don't remember what her problems were. I read about it in an interview done with Frederic Patenaude. You may be able to find out at her website: www.rawfamily.com. 🙂

i just started this yesterday. I was eating kale every day for ver 2 months then i had a stomach virus that left me messed up for about 2 weeks so all green veggies were a no-no. I am better now and i need to get back to the greens, but i get bored with eating them.

so i made one and it was really good.

one apple, water, a splash of pear juice, a splash of pomegranate juice, 2 huge dark leaf lettuce leafs and a tiny tiny bit of agave nectar. It was realy tasty. Today i added blueberries and left out the agave.

i eat fairly healthy anyway but now i just have an added treat to my routine. It's not like it'll be bad thing.

I gotta find something though that can add to it that'll make it super fiberous.

Question: Does wheat grass work? I went to juice stop today to get my smoothie since I ran out of ingredients at home and didn't have time to restock.

How long did it take for you guys to see an improvement in your skin? Mine already looks better. (day 3). A lot of redness from my inflammatory acne has subsided.

I've also noticed more energy and a feeling of well-being. Good stuff, definitely going to keep it up :)

Hey, I wanted to ask a question regarding putting lemons in the smoothies. I notice people using lemons. So like, are you squeezing the juice in to the mixture or are you adding the entire lemon(skinned)?

when i add lemon/lime/orange, i remove the skin and seeds. i tried juicing them before (using the manual juicer). im just too lazy to juice so i just drop them in w/o the skin n seeds.

Ok so I just made my first one. It tastes awesome, but here's the thing, it isn't green. It's purple.

I added in mine

One apple

One mango

2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves

Some frozen blueberries and strawberries.

One cup of water

Does that sound ok?

I made a really good tasting smoothie today

1 apple, handful of blueberries, 1.5 bananas, 3 kale leaves, handful of baby lettuce, lemon juice from 1/2 a lemon, Naked Mango Juice

First one I made where I couldn't taste the greens much

LOL!! haha, well hey, greens with ice cream and better than no greens at all, so go for it! 🙂 I wonder if just using some soy/almond milk with some honey would give that creamy/sweetness without have to use ice cream. Just be sure your ice cream doesn't have hydrogenated oils, and regular ice cream is loaded with chemicals, so try to go for the natural if you can - I think Breyers might be natural. I'm not sure. I get Whole Food's brand of ice cream.

i eat fairly healthy anyway but now i just have an added treat to my routine. It's not like it'll be bad thing.

I gotta find something though that can add to it that'll make it super fiberous.

That's great! For additional fiber, you could add ground flax seeds.

Wheat grass would be fine. 🙂 Just be sure to get a variety of greens and not use the same greens everytime.

It took me about 5-6 weeks before I stopped breaking out.

I'm so glad you're liking the smoothies! 🙂

Wow!! What an awesome first smoothie!!!!! That sounds perfect! Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are all great for disguising the color. 🙂

i like my smoothies better with 2 or more cups of water.

Me too. I like them to be drinkable and not so thick that I have to use a straw.

Wow!!! That's inspiring, because that's probably like an 80/20% greens to fruit ratio!!! That's really great!! You could definitely add another piece of fruit or two if you wanted. 🙂
