Why not just add more fruit and veggies to your diet? You would get the same effect eating a salad and some fruit.

Not the same

Blending breaks up the cellulose walls and more more nutrients are released and made bioavailable

If you compare the same visual volume a blended salad in the same size serving is 80% more dense and 30% more nutritious

Yes, one cup of blended greens is equal to eating four cups of salad greens. You'd have to eat a LOT of salad greens to get the same effect. 🙂

Isn't that what chewing is for?? Serious question. I realize it's a lot easier for people to eat a load of greens when they're blended into a dense mush, but are you saying that eating, for example, a whole lettuce in this way be "better" than eating a whole lettuce one leaf at a time? Why?

Because chewing is not able to break all the cellulosa walls that blending can. Yes, slowly chewing your greens allow you to extract the nutrients of the plant but not as much as blending them does.

So even blending 10 leaves versus slowly chewing 10 leaves would allow more nutrients to be released from the total rupture of the cellulosa walls

60 o 80 percent of greens cells are not broken-open by simply chewing them so a relevant amount of nutrients is lost

Well I had my first green smoothie today. I have to say I felt energized afterwards. How many times a day should I have one?

hey Danny, Are you clear from your current regimen?

I used to have pimples all over the face, big cysts and rosacea

I'm improving a lot as you can tell from my gallery pic, what is left is blackheads that you can only seem with face-zoom pics or in real life. Well but the more important thing is that my regimen has improved a lot my complexion and texture ... skin looks healthier overall and people who know me are like "whatever you're doing ... keep doing it; your skin is glowing" 🙂

I drink 4 cups a day. 🙂 Glad you liked your smoothie! When I was just starting out though, I drank about 6-8 cups a day the first month to flush my system.

Hmm.... most people find spinach to be wonderful for ridding acne. It's full of natural vitamin A. Maybe it was something else causing the acne on your forehead? 🙂

I'm having trouble finding spinach since the whole e coli thing. I've been using romaine lettuce because that what was in the fridge. I've ran out of that and I'm wondering, what can I get instead of the spinach? I'm sure there's healthier stuff than lettuce out there but I have no idea what it is.

Kale is healthier then spinach. In my mind it's probably the healthiest green out there.

it is so wonderful to see people tackling green smoothies.

im a raw vegan, and the "green smoothie" is the staple of may raw vegans' diets.

ive been on and off with them throught the past year, but the past 7 days ive been having 2-3 a day. trying desperately to up my greens because of a HORRIFIC breakout id had as a reaction to a 1 week binge on nuts, peanut butter, and boiled squash and potatoes. (i have food-intolerance induced acne, blood sugar induced acne, and hormonal induced acne. i have to be really careful with what i eat and when i eat it, or i break out. i know..go me. my life is so fun :wall: )

green smoothies are SO good for you.

i usually do:

1 banana. a cup of raspberry or strawberry kombucha tea (if youre unfamiliar with this, GET familiar with it! its a raw, fermented oriental tea FULL of vitamins/minerals/probiotics. great for digestion which can in turn be great for skin). cup of spinach. an ounce of wheatgrass juice. a tablespoon of spirulina powder. sometimes raspberries if i have them on hand. 3 ice cubes (no more, no less  )

Man, I wish I could drink more of these... I have one every morning but with all the stuff I put in them I don't think I could afford to eat them more then once a day. Did I mention kale is the best thing ever? So are blueberries.

Do you think a busy/lazy person could get the same result from those green powders that you make a drink out of? For example:

http://www.greensforlife.co.nz/ingredients.htm

There's loads of different types out there... What do you guys think?

Right after I have a smoothie I get stomach pains. It's weird because this has happened about five times now and the smoothies I make always have different fruits in them. This is really healthy so why would it upset my stomach? I'm using soy yogurt in mine. Could that be what's causing this?

Maybe it's the acid in the fruit... It still sucks either way though

Definitely worth trying out!! 🙂 Greens are so beneficial for you. I hope you'll like the smoothies!

No, dried greens will not be as beneficial as fresh greens. If I were traveling though and couldn't do smoothies, I'd definitely bring some dried greens with me!

Jill, I would try cutting out the soy yogurt first. It might be that the combination of soy with the fruit is causing problems for you. If not, then it might be that you're having a reaction to a particular fruit you're using. I get bad stomach pains if I eat cantaloupe - are you using melons? Many people don't digest melons well with other foods. By saying you use different fruits, does that mean each smoothie has lots of different fruits, or that you're changing them up each time... if the later, then maybe you're just having digestive issues with all the fiber. Do you normally eat fiber in your diet, or is this kind of a new thing for you? I would experiment with different fruits, but it it's a fiber issue, then that's more complicated. I have a cousin that can't eat fiber, because her digestive system can't handle it. 🙁 I doubt that's you're problem though! Hopefully with experiment you can find what works for you. Let us know! 🙂

I just made my first Green Smoothie. It sure was green by the time I added 6 Kale leaves to it (those things are big). I'm wondering If my greens/fruits ratio was off.

I used 16 oz of Berry Blast Juice from Naked Juice, 1 apple, a handful of frozen blueberries, and a frozen peach. I added the kale leaves slowly as the mixture was blending as suggested. It didn't taste too bad really, but I'm a bodybuilder so I'm used to eating for nutrition as opposed to taste (thankfully).

I attached an image with my green smoothie (the whole batch filled 2 1/2 of these cups), a single kale leaf stem, and my pipe (for added aesthetic value and size comparison - plus it's green!)

Very interested in this method as it helps your skin and your nutrition.

Cool!! If you want a "milder" greens taste, I'd go for baby greens like spinach, romaine, spring mix, etc. I'm glad you liked it okay though, and thanks for sharing your picture! And yeah, 6 leaves sounds like a lot, but good for you!! Way to jump into the smoothies! 🙂

hi independant thinker. I was just wondering what you meant in your first post when you said,

"You're not supposed to combine fruit & veggies you say? Well, "leafy greens" are the exception - they combine well with fruit."

Is it a health risk to mix fruits and vegetables, or simply an issue of taste?

thanks,

Jonsey

I chose Kale because its supposedly the healthiest - I can deal with the taste. I'm planning on making one of these smoothies everyday for breakfast, but I want to make sure I get enough greens every day with a single serving. So is 6 kale leaves excessive? I'm going to start making the smoothies with 2 apples, 1 lemon, and kale, since all are supposedly good at fighting acne. Thanks again.

Hey everyone. I haven't posted here yet but I figured I would since I started making the green smoothies.

The very first smoothie I made was 1 green apple, 1 pear, 2 handfuls of Spring Mix greens, 3 cups of water, and 5 or 6 frozen strawberries. It was completely awful but I choked it down anyways. I realized shortly after that I had picked a batch of fruit that didn't have very strong tastes at all so I went for some fruit with more "kick."

The second smoothie was a vast improvement. It consisted of 1 red apple, 1 lemon, 1 orange, 2 handfuls of Spring Mix greens, 2 1/2 cups of water, and about 12 raspberries/blackberries. The smoothie was actually red this time as opposed to the sludgy green/brown from the first smoothie. It tasted really good this time!

But am I too heavy on the fruit for the second smoothie? I don't want to throw off the fruit:veggie ratio (if I should even worry about that).

I would like to make just a plain leafy grean smoothie (no fruits) can someone tell me how much leafy greans and water to mix so that the leafy greens cell walls get broken down?

thanks!!
