lawl abg I like all veggie smoothies better than with a apple in it. The apple somehow screws the taste up for me. I dont know why :P Especially with spinach it just makes it gross.

LOL!! Well now, we "cannot" be drinking gross smoothies!! hehe An apple or pear with lemon juice is what Dr. Oz recommended on Oprah for vegetable smoothies, so for people reading this, I think most will like that combo (I love it - tastes so fresh), but we're all different. If you come up with a really tasty veggie smoothie, let us know!!! It really is about experimenting. I can remember a couple gross smoothies that I basically had to just "chug" down when I first started making them! LOL Thank goodness I hung in there!!! I knew how nutritious they'd be, and I was determined to like them! hehe :D

Are you sure it's not just everything else breaking you out? Have you excluded all other possible factors (low-GI diet, cutting out grains/gluten, cutting out dairy, cutting out soy, getting enough vitamins, eating enough green vegetables,) leaving only fruit as the possible culprit?

No I am an idiot.

Seriously though, i know what breaks me out and what doesn't, and fruit does.

for a smoothie thats all about the health I do beetroot, spinach, carrots, lemon and celery.

it tastes awful, but it makes you feel wonderfully good after!

Its more of a detox smoothie, as beets are great for your liver, and for some reason I always assume things that are associated with detoxing are great for skin...

I love these recipes, I can't wait to try them! xxx

Just had my first green smoothie today! The taste wasn't too bad, but the texture was awful! I think it was the half of the apple I put in. I did use a whole banana thinking the drink would become creamier, but it didn't. Is there anything else I can try so the smoothie comes out with more of a creamy texture?

I would recommend investing in a good juicer or blender. The Jack LeLanne Power Juicer is a good one because it saves all the pulp for you so you can add it back into your smoothie. It also gets pretty much all of the juice out.

Great thread guys! You inspired me to try some green smoothies and I'm still experimenting but here's the recipe I came out with so far:

4-6 strawberries

1/2 banana

1 handful of spinach

1/2 cup organic unsweetened coconut milk

parsley or cilantro

wheat grass powder ( http://www.amazinggrass.com/wheat-grass-packets.html )

few drops of fresh lemon juice

Enjoy!

I'm trying to add more veggies and less fruit, still testing how far my taste buds would go, lol!

I've been drinking green smoothies for 15 days and my acne has been going away! :)

I still have acne but I would says about 10% of my acne has gone away. In the beginning I broke out a tiny bit but probably because my body wasn't used to so much nutrients. I use kale, spinach, and parsley for my greens and banana, apples, and oranges as my fruits. I also add some frozen berries for some flavour and antioxidants and some flaxseed to help adsorb some nutrients.

Instead of using fresh greens can I use powders like wheatgrass?

Fresh is always better, try using some fresh ones and add wheat grass(half a pack) too for an extra kick:)

I think I may end up investing in a much better blender later on down the road because the smoothies are working! I try to have one every other day and it seems to be helping to heal my hyperpigmentation and keep the breakouts at bay. Fingers crossed, and I hope more people try this out!

I think the skin I left on the apple the other day was the cause of the smoothie not having the texture I wanted. Also tried celery the other day... The taste and texture this time was not so great but I'll continue to experiment with other types of fruit and greens.

Has anyone been to Jamba Juice lately?? They have green smoothies now!! I tried one with beets, and it was really good! So fun!!

flowerchild1990,

Your beetroot, spinach, carrots, lemon and celery smoothie sounds delicious!! :) I agree that beets are great for detox! One must be careful to go easy on beets though, because they can make you detox too fast!

woah21,

I'm glad you're continuing to experiment with different recipes and found that the apple skin might have been a culprit, though, I'd definitely include it anyway. A more powerful blender is I believe your solution, but another thing to try would be to blend a little longer and see if the longer blending helps. I ran into this same issue when I first started the smoothie with an old VitaMix. Longer blending times definitely helped, but at the same time, the old blender just wasn't all that great, so I never got a really smooth smoothie until I bought a new VitaMix, haha. Keep it up! :)

Flying_HiGh,

Wow!! That recipe sounds delicious!! Thanks for sharing! :)

Little Kid,

That is great news!! Thanks for sharing and keep it up! :)

Donnie_Darko,

Thank you for those kind words!! I'm glad your first smoothie went well, and I'd love to hear back about your results! :)

raiderdood,

I agree with Flying_HiGh that fresh greens are always a better choice. :)

Back again on day 26 of yummy and healthy green smoothies! My acne has been clearing a bit more from my last post but not as much as I thought it would. Oh well.

I've been thinking of adding a beet into my green smoothie cause I heard beets are very good for you are good for curing acne.

I'll post back in a few weeks.

Little Kid,

Thanks for the update!! Definitely hang in there! It's great that you've already gone 26 days, and even if you're not yet getting the results you hope for with your skin, you know you're doing great things for your health! :)

Careful with the beets! If you find you're having new detox symptoms, cut back a little on them, as they can really make you detox. I know when juicing, it's been advised to have no more than 1/2 cup a day of beet juice.

Ginger has wonderful health properties. If you like it, definitely add it! It would be great in a veggie smoothie with some lemon juice. :)

abg fairy--

thank you so much for all your support on these boards and, most of all, your positive attitude! no matter what someone puts their faith in, it is important to have faith!

i'd love to try these green smoothies when i'm home for the summer (i was going to try them before but, well, that plan failed)

i have a similar concern to some other posters on this thread: i'm on a tcm regimen that doesn't allow for too many raw veggies. what do you think about lightly steaming the spinach before using it?

thanks! hope all is well in your world!

jj

I have a question for you smoothie-people.

Would you say adding too many things at one is bad? I've just been making the smoothies once and having half that day and putting the other half in the fridge for the next.

I add tons of different vegetables/fruits/cinnamon/apple cider vinegar etc. sometimes. Overload or what?

I mean usually things in life follow the rule "less is more", but as long as you arent going too crazy im sure it's fine

jokerj,

I have great respect for TCM. It has at times been a Godsend for me and my family. If you find a really good practitioner, it's definitely a blessing. I see nothing wrong with abstaining from raw veggies for a short period of time. I have done the same actually, and for a while, all of my blended greens were cooked - still kept my skin clear. Actually, my body seems to do even better with cooked vegetables, though I think raw is important as well. My food cravings go way down if I'm getting enough cooked vegetables. I still like my chocolate though! hehe So yes, you can lightly steam spinach, or, you could buy frozen greens. Frozen greens are blanched before being flash frozen and are not considered raw.

You asked about coconut, and while I'm on the fence about coconut oil (and lean more towards saying one should avoid it), I do think it's okay to eat coconut milk in its whole form, i.g., coconut flakes, coconut milk, etc. Actually, I have a delicious chocolate dessert that I make with coconut, below. :)

Thank you so much for your kind words too! It makes me happy to pass this information along. I really hope the smoothies go well for you, and please post again if you need more help or have anymore questions! :)

Chocolate-Coconut Mousse

* 5 Tbs Cocoa

* 3 Tbs Honey

* 2 Ts Vanilla Extract

* 1 Can Coconut Milk (drain the water as best you can, but don't throw it out, it's delicious!)

* Blend ingredients and store in the refrigerator to thicken. Can be served alone or with fruit - I love it with black cherries!

Phresh,

I have definitely heard people say that the less ingredients you eat at one sitting, the better. My take on this is that as long as you're eating healthfully, you should be just fine. If you enjoy more simple smoothies, great, but if you need lots of ingredients to make them taste good, then go for it. Better to eat a green smoothie with too many ingredients than say, a milkshake! haha :)
