my friend gave me a taste of the "cheesey" ones tonight, but i think the pesto ones look best (and healthiest!)!

I've been using a recipe that I found in a book that a friend lent to me. Here it is:

"4 organic carrots, unpeeled

1 organic apple, peeled (because I don't have a juicer)

1 kiwi fruit

1 handful of parsley, with stems

Below are some statistics:

Super rich in vitamins A, C & E.

Rich in B vitamins and potassium.

Potassium is vital for the normal balance of water in the body, and it's essential in the production of enzymes which stimulate energy production. It's also part of the mechanism that keeps the heart beating regularly.

The carotenoids in carrots and parsley improve night vision, keep eyes healthy and are great for the skin.

This juice is full of antioxidants"

Just stumbled upon this thread and wanted to say I have been following the "Eat to Live" diet for about 8 weeks now - using green smoothies for breakfast for about 6 weeks and have noticed a remarkable change in my skin. I have had a 2 week period of completely clear skin and last week only developed one tiny spot on my chin that went away very quickly. I am 30 years old and have had acne since age 14 so this is quite dramatic!!! Thanks for posting all the great recipies - that will help me get out of my strawberry/banana/cherry/spinach rut! I did find a great "recipie" yesterday that I tried:

1/2 C frozen mango

1/2 C frozen strawberries

1-2 peeled clemetine oranges (or 1/4 orange juice)

1/8 C lime juice

2 C water

1 handful baby spinach

Blend until smooth!

It was really good - I think adding that splash of lime juice really livens things up!

Just had my first green smoothie today! The taste wasn't too bad, but the texture was awful! I think it was the half of the apple I put in. I did use a whole banana thinking the drink would become creamier, but it didn't. Is there anything else I can try so the smoothie comes out with more of a creamy texture?

Freeze the banana first - it makes the smoothie thick and creamy like a milkshake - I usually take my nearly going bad bananas and remove the skin, slice and place in snack sandwhich bags (1/2 to 1 banana per bag) and then they are always on hand to toss into the last minute smoothie! Freezing the bananas seems to make them sweeter tasting to me too.

I just made my first green smoothie it was great it had:

1 banana

5 strawberries

4 kale stalks de-stemed?

2 stalks of parsely without the stalks

1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 tablespoon of organic raw honey

1 cup of spring water

it was very good and I felt like I was on a cloud. I couln't finish it all, I made a full glass and barely drunk half of it. My question is my smoothie was a little spicy what could it have been? weird huh? But it was still good next time I'll leave out the cinnamon.

jokerj,

Those kale chips sound great to me! Good ingredients! I noticed that some of the others have salt and added oils, so these sound like the better choice! :)

neverforget,

Great recipe, thanks! :)

annasrobbie,

I'm thrilled Dr. Fuhrman's diet is working so well for you!! Thank you for posting! :)

GreenEyes33,

Really hope it goes well for you and definitely report back! :)

lexib,

I'm thinking it might have been the cinnamon - too much can definitely get a little spicey! I'm glad you liked it anyway!! hehe :)

Had my first green smoothie a couple of days ago. I did:

Frozen berry mix (strawberries, rasberries, blackberries)

Handful of baby spinach

Frozen peaches

Water

To be honest, it wasn't great and you could really taste the greens. So the next day I tried:

Frozen peaches

One banana

Handful of baby spinach

Almond milk

1 scoop of Vanilla undenatured whey protein powder

This one was SO much better! I think it's the banana that really makes the difference. I could hardly taste the greens at all and it was pretty darn yummy. Can't wait to see if it helps my skin! Even if it doesn't it's still a great way to get more fruits and greens in your diet.

starlys,

Glad you found a recipe you like! Definitely experiment with other fruits as well - apples and pears are great! Bananas are one of my favorites though too. I love them with greens, honey and cocoa!! Wishing you luck! :)

Thanks for the suggestions! Gonna go make me another smoothie right now.

P.S. Love your quote, btw. It's one of my favorite Bible verses 🙂

I love adding Vitamin C powder or tablets to my green drinks. I don't eat fruit, so it really masks the bitterness. It has a sweet/tart flavor, without all the sugar/fructose from fruit. This is great for people who can't stomach straight green drinks.

Add about 1000mg of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and/or calcium ascorbate) per cup and blend really well with the rest of your green drink.

Also if this has been posted before I apologize. This thread is rather big.

a friend mentioned to me today, upon seeing those new jamba juice green smoothies, that blending a smoothie actually is bad for your glycemic index and overall health because it breaks up sugar strains and decreases fiber

is this true?

Interesting point. I googled a bit and found this which says it's OK:

starlys,

You are very welcome! Yes, isn't that such a great scripture verse? Sometimes when life gets crazy I like to remind myself of it! :)

Agent Acne,

Creative idea! Have you tried the veggie smoothies with just half an apple though, which is a low-sugar fruit? I'm not big on supplements and have heard bad things about ascorbic acid, which is a synthetic form of vitamin C... I do agree that the stuff tastes good though! haha :D

jokerj,

Hey you! That really interesting! I actually have not heard of that yet - I'm thinking it's a myth. The main thing I hear about blending is that you get about 4 times the nutrients because of the cell walls being broken down so thoroughly. Love that! :)

a story, a recipe, and a review:

today, my brother agreed to let me make him a smoothie.

i mixed:

one banana, a package of frozen blueberries, turmeric, manuka honey, kefir, water, ginger, baby bok choy, baby spinach, and trader joe's green drink mix

well, the smoothie was delicious. unfortunately, my old, old blender broke in the middle of making the smoothie. at first, it just began to spontaneously leak, so, without foresight, I took the pitcher off the machine, which held the broken bottom. smoothie was all over the counter. the smoothie got a skeptical, partial thumbs-up from my brother, and the blender (my good old, go-to, retro blender) is gone.

as for green smoothies in general: i'm looking and feeling better already! ABG Fairy, you have been such a help throughout all of this. thanks again!

A week ago I started going raw, so far with about 95% of my meals being raw (one day at work we had Mexican :().

I've had persistent bacne for the last few years now and haven't really tried much to fix it because I hate creams and other things of that nature.

Anyways, I also have been doing green smoothies, try to get one in every day. All I can say is my bacne is only red marks right now, no active spots since I started! The red marks are fading but very slowly. I think this stuff works. I'm also losing weight even though I'm not fat/overweight at all, but my tiny gut is flattening which is awesome. Energy is much better too, I don't feel exhausted after the end of the day like I did before.

I did raw a few months ago, but gave up because I was too hungry and couldn't resist my cravings. Green smoothies seem to solve it. I crave those now and they are quite satisfying (just made a banana, strawberry, kiwi, romaine lettuce and hemp seed smoothie :D).

I'm not sure how well it'd work for teenage/hormonal acne, but I say if you have adult acne (I'm in mid-20s) give it a shot!

and thanks ABG Fairy for all the great info :)

I use Green Vibrance in my smoothies to get my full dose of vitamins as well. Way easier than trying to take a million pills a day. Been doing this for 2 years now. I add spinach or kale, berries, almond milk or hemp milk, with some pineapple juice.

I just moved so I'm in complete control of my diet, so I've started blending.. Almost everything hah..

Anyone try this? https://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Grass-Superfood-8-5-Ounce-Container/dp/B00112ILZM/

Been using it for a few days, I like it. It adds that extra umph to my smoothies that make them taste more nutritious. I have only had jamba juice once or twice, but when I did they had something in it that made it seem more textured, than the smoothies I made at my house. This really adds that extra taste / texture, if you know what I mean? It's hard to credit energy gain towards the powder because well.. I'm doing smoothies and I already know they give me good energy.

One of my favorite drinks lately is a few spoons of vanilla yogurt and 2 spoons of my chocolate whey protein, and some water. It tastes exactly like hot chocolate (only cold). It's so good.

My grocery has bananas on sale atm for super cheap.. Should I freeze them and take them out and blend them once they thaw or is it cool when they are frozen? Any tips here? Also does frozen banana add a different texture than a normal banana?

Also do you guys freeze yours peeled or unpeeled?

Oh Rob, you've given me a reason to expect a package in the mail again from Amazon  But I definitely know what you mean by texture! no matter if I put ice in or whatever, it's just not the same. I have so many friends who've worked at jamba juice, I need to ask them what it is that they put into something that gives it the texture.

I like to freeze my fruits/veggies and thaw them slightly or microwave them a bit when I'm in a rush, never had any problems! I freeze my bananas peeled, but I don't know if that's bad or not.

Pretty sure I saw ABG say she freezes them peeled too..... Awesome I'm going to go stock up tomorrow.. 49 cents a pound, can't beat that... I just moved to eastcoast and bananas seem way more expensive out here, so I need to act on this price hah.

I used to drink these all the time and loved them, but gave up as I didn't have much time in the mornings and I struggled getting the textures quite right and with the expense/storage space for frozen fruit. I am looking to get back into these, I just had a quick query whether adding my own blended greens to a glass of shop-bought fruit smoothie would be okay? I realise the fruit sugars are high, but the greens would hopefully neutralise that, and I would be using one that is pure fruit.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance :) <3

I had been doing them daily for about 2 weeks, then went out of town and ate normal foods and my acne flared up pretty bad again. Now that I'm back on the smoothies (only a few days) my skin is healing very rapidly and no new breakouts.

I love this stuff :D

Sorry I haven't been around lately!

jokerj,

Oh no!!!! What a mess!!! I once spilled a green smoothie and it got all over my drapes and carpet! Luckily, it came out beautifully with soap and water. I hope your mess wasn't too much of a pain to clean up! I'm so glad the smoothies are helping you so much!! Makes me so happy to hear!! Did you get another blender? Sad about the old one breaking. :(

IPA,

You are so welcome!! I'm thrilled to hear of your great results! Wow!! Got your second post too about going without the greens and having your skin flair up as a result. That's what always happened to me!! It's amazing how great greens can work!! Down the road, you shouldn't be so dependant on them once you start eating better overall and build up your nutrient reserves.

Melie87,

Green Vibrance is a great product. I definitely recommend still getting in some fresh greens though! Doing both would be a good idea! :)

polster,

Those are great tips!! Thanks for sharing! :) Probiotics are "very" important and not just for acne but for good health in general. Magnesium is super important as well. Transdermal magnesium (applied to the skin) is the most effective.

Rob2686,

Hey Rob!! Great to see you around! That green powder sounds good!! I should start adding some powdered greens to my smoothies. As for the texture, it may just be that Jamba Juice uses commercial blenders that blend more thoroughly? My Vita-Mix does a great job of blending... I'm thinking I get a similar texture...

Did you freeze the bananas? I think they'd be great to use frozen! I'm pretty sure some people have posted in the past that they like adding frozen bananas to their smoothies, so I'd go for it! :)

NicolaJMP,

It's true that the greens do help to neutralize the fruit sugars, but I'd be careful with that. However, this is better than doing nothing, and this is the only way you're going to get some blended greens in everyday, then I say do it! :)

Hello! New blender in hand, I'm hoping green smoothies will help me with a burgeoning challenge--

I need to do an elimination diet because my doctor thinks I have a food sensitivity. I'm hoping to stick to very basic green smoothies (and other ways of getting basic greens) and fish for a week and then slowly add other foods back in. If anyone has any ideas for me getting enough nutrition without consuming the likely suspects of food sensitivity (which I believe would be nuts, dairy, gluten, soy, etc.), please let me know about your ideas. Hope all is well with all my other green smoothiers!
