Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

ProActiv. awesome. bought 3 2.5 oz packs for $20 + $5 shipping.
used 2-5 times each week overnight and results were excellent.
the first night of the week you use it, it only brings out your acne... seems to force all oils and acne to the surface. the second time, you'll barely see any acne and will have a much healthier looking skin-tone.

washes off easy with Irish Spring.

best value compared to any acne treatment + cost, besides Acnexus.

Cons:

gets my pillow dirty.

worth the usual $10 price-tag's effort, even if it doesn't work you'll be writing a review helpful for anyone who may have similar skin that won't work with this. i don't know... just try it.

Pros:

Feels fresh afterward

Cons:

New acne

I've been using the product for a month: Week 1: Wow! my skin is consistently clearing up! Week 2: Occasional unexplainable zits. Side effects perhaps? Week 3-4: Uncontrollable acne all over. I have been using the product twice a day. I love the feel of it - not drying, fresh, lotion is a must. I liked the combination of the spot treatment and the Salicylic Acid gel. However, after 2 weeks it's all back and more! I've heard of developing tolerance for any acne medication you use, but in 1 week?!! I am going to a dermatologist next. I don't recommend the product, because of lack of its consistence. Also, keep in mind that purchasing a 30 day kit, you will be charged full price every 30 days thereafter.

Pros:

Smells nice, I think it has made my pores smaller..

Cons:

My skin wasn't that bad before, now over a month in, I have spots around my mouth and chin, which I never had, and little spots all over my forehead.

I don't know if now I am paying more attention to my skin so I notice the imperfections, or if Murad are trying to make my skin worse so I keep using the product to wait to work. I spent enough money on this to feel like I have to carry on. I only read good reviews before I bought, and I wish I would have read all of these before too! I think I will carry on until I run out of the products and see what it's looking like then..

Pros:

feels light on my skin

Cons:

made me break out waaaaay worse than I ever have.

I suffered with terrible acne for years, tried everything- accutane, antibiotics, acne facials etc. I started using proactive 4 years ago and my face cleared up amazingly. I read up on Murad and liked how it seemed a little more natural and moisturizing. After 2 weeks my face started breaking out.. i thought maybe it was purging. but now after using murad for almost 2 months my face is continually getting worse and worse. I'm throwing this expensive garbage away and going back to my old faithful-proactive.

Pros:

The face wash is great and left my skin feeling clean and the skin perfecting lotion seemed to work good, too. Cleared my face for about a month.

Cons:

After a month my breakouts came back with a vengeance! Its kinda pricey since it doesn't work that great. And the treatment gel smells like rotten eggs. Seriously.

I'm sure it works for some people with light acne, but it definetly didn't work for me. After about a month, I broke out worse than ever! I don't reccomend this product.

Pros:

None.

Cons:

-It purged my skin aka more skin breakouts.

I tried and purchased the whole Murad Acne Kit, which is 4 pieces. I had gorgeous Gabrielle Union skin until around 19 years old. My skin at that time, randomly breaking out. Because I have been diagnosed with hormonal acne, my skin one minute is clear, then just breaks out. So, I can't say if it is moderate or light. Def. not severe though. I bought this kit because their infomercial stated how gentle it was compared to Proactiv. But within a short period of using this, my pimples became cluster-Cysts on both sides of my face. After my skin healed, I was left with really ugly acne hyperpigmentation on both sides of my face. It looked awful and took months to disappear. As a woman of color, I can't afford to purge, as once the breakout heals, I get hyperpigmentation. I think this is the worst product I tried.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
