Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

- Really good for inflamed and cystic acne
- Keeps acne more under control
- Doesn't irritate the skin like other products
- Lightens red marks and scarring with longer use

Cons:

- Doesn't get rid of acne all by itself
- May make your skin peel a bit (use a good moisturizer!)
- Not everyone likes the smell (bar soap is the worst)

Sulphur products are great for more severe types of acne, including cystic acne. Sulphur doesn't exactly get rid of your acne, at least not by itself, but the way I see it, it "converts" your acne into run-of-the-mill zits. All of my cysts were gone after only two weeks of using sulphur soap and I used to have at least 2 or 3 active cysts all the time. Bar soap tends to be a lot harsher on the skin than liquid soap. Sulphur shampoo is great for scalp acne (it seems like it keeps it under control most of the time), but if you can't get your hands on any, you can use sulphur soap (yes, even bar soap) to wash your hair. I wholeheartedly recommend using sulphur products to help keep your acne under control.

Pros:

....Smells okay?

Cons:

Everything.
-left a scar
-turned a really bad pimple into a gaping hole/scab
-it turned my moderate acne into severe
-irritated me
-dried me out
-itched
-burned

I used this a few years back, and this has probably been the worst thing I've used. It turned one of my pimples into a gaping hole, it was expensive, it didn't work, and not to mention it hurt my face a lot. I really thought murad was going to work, but it really didn't at all. Terrible. Please go spend your money on something else, not this. Just for the record, I have sensitive, combination, acne prone skin, and my acne is light-moderate.

Pros:

NONE!!!!!

Cons:

Made my skin 100 times worse

Avoid the Murad system like the plague!!! It caused me to get cystic acne that I am still struggling to clear up months after stopping using these products. Do yourself a favor and try something else!

Pros:

Reduces breakouts significantly
Leaves skin smooth and glowing
Reduces oilyness but doesn't dry skin out TOO much
Inexpensive

Cons:

hard to find in drugstores-can only find it online

I have used this product for years and it always works WONDERS for breakouts. The times my acne flares up is when I run out and don't use the pernox for a while. It has a fine grain scrub and contains sulfur & salicylic acid. Give it a try!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
