Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Great spot treatment
Results overnight
Clears area in 2-3 days
A little goes a long way

Cons:

Kind of hard to wash off in the morning

I've been using the refining masl for a few months and my skin has never been this clear before! I don't even need makeup anymore. It works amazingly! And the smell really doesn't bother me.

Pros:

Makes skin feel tingly and clean. Helps my skin get a nice healthy glow.

Cons:

When I would first use it my skin got a nice healthy glow, but after a while it made my skin more oily. (you could feel the oils when you touched it, and my face would look real greasy) Acne got worse and didn't clear up. Whenever I used it my acne would become more obvious.

Don't buy this if you have oily skin. It makes it worse. And as for clearing up the acne, it did nothing for me.

Pros:

None

Cons:

- Did not work at all
- Broke out during use

I know that this product is supposed to cause a "purging" effect, but I did not see any results whatsoever with this product. I am thankful I didn't "purge" badly. If you ask me, I don't think your skin needs to purge. I don't understand. Apparently, from the other reviews that I have read about the Murad system, it gave people cystic acne that they never had before. I am pretty sure that if there was cystic acne on their faces they would have noticed it before using Murand. Therefore, I believe this product causes uncontrollable acne in some people. Some people can't afford to suffer through 5 1/2 months of "purging", they have lives and jobs where people have too see their faces. And I'm pretty sure they want a face without unnecessary cystic acne covering it.

Pros:

Love the tingling after washing my face.
Clears my skin right up when using twice a day.

Cons:

Price, but my insurance pays for it..

I've tried a lot for my acne. Proactiv made my face so much worse and dry. This is the only product that clears up my skin within a week of washing my face twice a day. If I don't use it twice a week, I'll get maybe 2 or 3 pimples. Everyone who says this product "sucks" must have really sensitive skin.. Cause it's the only thing that works for me. I must just be lucky. I just love ittttt.

Everything.

This is a terrible product. The slippery infomercials really sucked me in, and I d not think Dr. Murad is the doctor presented in the infomercial. The day cream had freaking SPARKLES in it (they obviously don't think men need or want the products) and the spot treatment gave me MORE zits. S

Cons:

THIS PRODUCT SUCKS. IT MAKES YOU BREK OUT MORE THEN WHAT YOU HAD EFORE YOU USED IT

I had perfectly clear skin before using this thanks to kate somervilles acne solution. I switched to this to try a cheaper soultion. DO NOT try this product. It keeps your skin clear for like the first few weeks but then you breakout like crazy! I've never broke out so much. I counted at least 20 pimples with new ones everyday. Before I would get maybe like 2 a month! DO NOT TRY IT. Not worth the risk.

Pros:

Will treat any type of blemish in 1-4 days.

Cons:

Sometimes does not bring the quickest results.

I got this product and I am only 11. I do not have acne, but I do occasionally get a pimple. I hate it, so I put a dab of the mask on the clogged pore, and it is gone in somewhat of a short time. I am a fan of it.

Pros:

Helps even out the tone of your skin, initially the results are great

Cons:

Doesn't do what it says--clear your skin.

This product may work at first and help even out the tone and feel of your skin, but it simply does not clear it. I've had -- by a dermatologist's standard -- "mild" acne for the past 3 and a half years, and it has not yet gone away. I used this product for 11 months and results fade in and out from good to poor. The bottom line is that this regimen is overpriced, results are unpredictable, and it just does not clear skin.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
