Acne.org’s Real World Take
Due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to absorb skin oil and dry out the skin, sulfur has been used for thousands of years for various skin conditions, including acne. However, it is normally reserved for noninflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads), because it doesn't work as well as other over-the-counter medications for inflammatory acne (papules and pustules).

Pros:

Cleanser leaves skin feeling refreshed.
Spot treatment helps zit dry up overnight.
Lotion hydrates skin.

Cons:

Toner burns skin for the first couple times.

I have used SO many products on my face. I've tried Proctiv, Dermalogica, birth control, every cleanser in retail stores and NOTHING worked. Everything made my acne worse. I finally decided to use this product. I was reluctant, but by the first 2 weeks I noticed a great improvement in the look and feel of my skin. I have been using it for about 4 months and my skin hasn't looked this great in a long time. I still have scares from previous acne and I need to find something to get rid of those. I haven't had a breakout in a long time!

Pros:

I got it for free (got it from my cousin). It somewhat worked.

Cons:

It didn't do much - my pimples didn't disappear like the commercials promised. My pimples just dried up a bit and that was it. There was still some redness. Oh, and it stinks!

It sucks. But it can still be used if you want your pimples to dry faster.

Pros:

NONE!!!

Cons:

Made pimple worse!!!

All of the commercials tat say it will zap your zits overnight are lies!!! My zit was very small and you could not see the white puss yet when I put it on at night. The next morning I took it off to see that the zit became larger and more painful and noticeable! It was a HUGE rip off!

Pros:

This collection worked quickly to get rid of pimples, and also evened out my skin tone. I used all the products as directed (but using the gel at night only) and my existing pimples shrank and disappeared in 3 days. It's great that you can buy a sample kit with all the products to test whether they're right for your skin type, or to use just for a short time if you have occasional acne. The spot treatment is gentle and doesn't "cake" on pimples, which is good. The lotion is really soothing.

Cons:

Cleanser does not remove makeup very well, especially not mascara/eyeliner. The toner and gel are a little abrasive - my skin goes red when I put them on, but thankfully returns to normal by the time I'm done my morning routine. Consider using the gel only at night.

I bought this kit on Sunday because I needed to be pimple-free by Friday, and it worked for me. It freaks me out that some products make my skin turn red, but the reality is that my skin tone is much more even after just a week of use and I'm wearing less makeup than usual. This sample kit is definitely worth trying - these could be the products that work for your skin!

Pros:

Pros:

None

Cons:

Doesnt work at all

This is a homeopathic "medicine", which means the active ingrediens are diluted so much that there is none left in the cream. Homeopathy does not work, please dont waste your money

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
