Pros:

Really works!
No side effects

Cons:

None so far!

I've been on the med for almost a month and already seeing great results. I've been suffering with hormonal acne the past few years. I break out around my chin and jaw area. I am 26 years old and have tried every medication under the sun. This is the first met I've seen great results with. I had braced myself for the initial break out, but never had one! People have been noticing my skin clearing up and I've been able to wear less make up! As a nurse I recommend this medication.

Pros:

No more cystic acne, period.
Healthy glowing skin.
Hair on my head grows faster and falls out less.
Inexpensive.

Cons:

A lot more urinating.
little peeling and dryness.

I've been on spironolactone for a month now, and I definitely see a difference. My dermatologist put me on a regimen of 100 mg a day, I use Aczone every morning and night and tretinoin every other night. It's only been a month and my face is almost clear. Literally, the only marks on my face are from old scars which are starting to fade as well. It may be different for everyone, but I did NOT have an initial breakout, my face started clearing up instantly. I'm getting my confidence back and I feel great! I recommend this regimen to any female dealing with acne! Before I tried every acne care system, Proactiv, Exposed, Murad, etc. Nothing helped, and Proactiv made it even worse. Take my advice and don't waste your money!

Pros:

Cleared my cystic acne in 3 months
Skin and hair are less oily
No side effects!
Cheap - $30AUD for 3.5 months worth

Cons:

None

Suffered acne for 10 years, tried everything from minomycin to accutane. Some helped temporarily but not like spironolactone. Skin is completely clear after 4 months and it will just keep on improving the longer I am on it. Definitely worth the wait which I don't think is very long. This will cure your hormonal acne, accutane wont!

Pros:

99% Clear skin
Lose some water weight
No oily hair

Cons:

Can't take NSAIDS (Aleve, Ibuprofen, etc.)
Bad initial break out

I had basically tried every type of topical and antibiotic out there. I've been on Doxy, Mino, Tetra and none of them helped at all. I didn't have cystic acne but I definitely broke out quite a bit, especially around my period. Finally, I was prescribed Spironolactone and it's my life saver! I started out at 200mg (one pill in the AM one in the PM) which is what I'm still taking. Initially, I broke out like crazy for about the first two months, then around the third month it began miraculously clearing up. Now that I'm on my 10th month, I'm super clear. If I do get a zit, it usually goes away much quicker than before. Try it, you have nothing to lose!

Pros:

Cleared up my backne, nodulocystic facial acne

Cons:

No cons whatsoever for me

I have been on a combination of Spironolactone 100 mg QD for 10 months with Doxycycline 100 mg Q HS and applying Atralin, a retinoid gel and my skin is almost flawless. I just revisited my dermatologist last week and the Doxy was discontinued. I will remain on the Sprironolactone and Atralin. The Atralin is wonderful because it also contains collagen and will not dry your face out as bad as Retin-A. I use a combination of PanOxyl 4% benzoyl peroxide facial wash in the morning and CeraVe foaming facial cleanser at night. I use the Atralin at night with the CeraVe, Using the PanOxyl will cancel the Atralin out if used at the same time. CeraVe AM and PM moisturizers are awesome as well!! I have had the best luck with these products. I have had acne since I was 13 and I just recently turned 30. I had it with my disfiguring acne. I am a nurse and want my patients to take comfort in the care I provide if they see I am taking care of myself. I would recommend Spironolactone to anyone! P.S. My acne was so bad my dermatologist wanted to put me on an Accutane regimen for four months. I declined due to possible side effects and the risk of acne returning after $2500.00 worth of treatment including visits, medications, and blood testing. Research all options before trying a treatment.

Pros:

Easy to take (one step).
Cleared my skin dramatically.

Cons:

It is a mild diuretic, so I am thirstier and have to pee more. My skin feels a bit drier as well.
Weird metallic aftertaste at first.
Takes about a month to work.
Need a blood test first to check your electrolytes.

I've had moderate to severe acne since i was 12 yrs old, and tried everything under the sun (antibiotics, differin, lots of benzoyl peroxide, retin-a, proactiv, various homeopathic and dietary changes). The only thing that ever seemed to make a difference was yasmin, which unfortunately made my hair fall out. It really took some convincing, but my dr gave me a scrip for 100 mg of spiro daily. This is a drastic difference. My skin is the clearest it's ever been. I get zits before my period, but they are small, no longer the terrible, painful cysts that made me self concious and depressed. Basically, if you suspect your acne is hormonal, give this a try. I'm not saying it will work great for everyone, but you won't know until you try.

Pros:

It works!! My skin is finally clear
Good for painful cystic acne
Easy on the stomach (unlike some of the oral antibiotics)

Cons:

Can't be used by men (sorry guys)
Heavy, irregular periods (need to go on birth control pill while taking it)
Get dehydrated more easily
Not all dermatologists will prescribe it

I really like this prescription. It has worked better than anything that I've ever used before, and I finally have clear skin. Drink lots of water (which we should all be doing anyways). Some people need to pee more frequently when they take it All in all, I recommend asking about it if you're fed up with oral antibiotics.

Pros:

-Has stopped chronic, cystic acne lesions

Cons:

-Brittle Nails

I have had acne since I was 13, and cystic acne since I was 18. I was finally prescribed 100 mg a day of spironolactone in conjunction with Retin-A and it has been amazing. The spironolactone may have caused an initial breakout (more likely the Retin-A), but after about only 2 months, my cystic acne lesions have disappeared and fingers crossed have not yet returned. First time in years that I don't have either healing cysts or new ones. Highly recommend this.

Pros:

Normalize your skin!!
Not carrying my concealer around anymore!!

Cons:

None so far

I had written earlier after having my initial breakout but really had to update because I wish I had taken spiro YEARS ago! I finally have normal skin...not greasy, pores are small, no pimples on the horizon!!! I swear I always had a new one popping up. I take 100 mgs and just got my labwork back & it was normal. I was so afraid I would have to stop taking it. If you try it, be patient..

Pros:

Clear skin
Less oily skin

Cons:

Frequent urination

When I was in high school I was one of the kids that was very lucky to only rarely have any sort of pimples. I have always had large pores and moderately oily skin though. In my early 20's I started to develop acne that only seemed to be getting worse with time. I am now 26 and was very recently diagnosed with PCOS which can cause acne. My doctor put me on it to also help with facial hair, but I am immediately noticing no new acne, reduced pore size, less oil and an evened out complexion. Amazing.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
