“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Helped to prevent acne
Lighter or non-existent periods

Cons:

Causes birth defects!
Dehydrating
Makes your pee smell/look funny
Affects your fertility and cycle

This was recommended to me by a doctor in South Carolina after I used Accutane, Birth Control, and every prescription cream on the market. It really helped with the acne, especially the cystic stuff. However, it wasn't until I moved with a new doctor that I found out it causes sever birth defects if you get pregnant while on it. I was told that it levels out hormone fluctuations. This was a big problem for me as I do not take birth control. After deciding to do natural family planning (Creighton method), it became even more clear to me how bad it is for your body to alter your hormone fluctuations throughout the month. It took me several months (almost 6) to gain back normal fertility after I went off this medication. Note: that does not mean you are infertile, my cycle just wasn't normal and predictable. I am also an active runner, constantly training for marathons or half -marathons and I found this medication too dehydrating while I am training. More than any other medication I've been on. Finally, when I moved to Nebraska, the doctor took me off the medication right away because it's bad to be on for long periods of time because of the damage it can do to your body. I wish the first doctor had told me all of the side effects.

Pros:

Oh my goodness. Just one, a much lighter and shorter period. That's it!

Cons:

Oh wow, every side effect you can think of. Bloatedness, sore breasts, roller coaster nausea, worse breakouts, no improvement what so ever.

I was very disappointed with this product as the reviews here, have loads of happiness spilling over this medication. I was unlucky with this product and am very frustrated on where to turn next as I am 36 and can not go back on the pill as it will have detrimental affects as I am in a higher risk category to develop blood clots in my legs. Also, yes, with this product it can develop birth defects in a male. Beware ladies. It's not always as safe as they tell you.

Pros:

Could possibly help if I had taken a high enough dosage.

Cons:

Mad me very, very, thirsty..

I have a pre-disposition for drinking massive quantities of water daily. I don't have diabetes, but I'm constantly thirsty. This product made me RAVENOUSLY THIRSTY. The kind of thirsty that almost makes you freekout if you hear running water (fountain or toilet) and don't have access to drinking water. I ended up getting off of it when I had to have knee surgery and couldn't walk to the sink every 30 minutes to get more water.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Caused hormonal acne

I'm not totally against this pill. I believe it can help a lot of women if given to the right person. Please please only take this if your acne is truly hormonal( break out bad around your period and/or have acne around your chin and jawline) thanks to spironolaconte I now have hormonal acne. I break out around my period. Before I would never count the days of when my period is now I do and I dread it living in fear of how bad the breakout is going to be. I've been off of it for 6 months now and no improvements. It has ruined my life.

Pros:

Sort of worked--clears me up somewhat w/PMS-time acne

Cons:

-Worry about side effects such as potassium levels and interactions with other meds
-Takes too long to work
-Constantly taking medication
-Expensive
-Requires continuing visits to derm
-Suspected it affected my moods and weight

This helped a little bit, but I just don't like taking medication that seems to be quite powerful. I've continued my quest and I am starting to get enthusiastic about GREEN TEA. It worked faster and better than this stuff.

Pros:

Supposed to be good for hormonal acne.

Cons:

My 12 year old was spotting after a couple of weeks on this medication, so the doctor took her off it right away.

Be careful and be in communication with your doctor while taking any medication.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Very dry skin.
Weight gain.
Dehydration.
No improvement in acne.

This medication caused me to be thristy all the time, I could not drink enough water, and I had to urinate every 30 - 40 minutes. gained 10 pounds, with no change in diet or exercise. This medication did not help my acne at all.

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

HORRIBLE CYSTIC ACNE, HAIR LOSS

This drug is absolutely, positively the absolute worse drug i have ever taken. I was completely clear before starting this medicine. Almost immediately I started to breakout in massive cysts. Every two weeks a new one would sprout. I stuck it out for two months, but i just couldn't take it anymore and stopped completely 21 days ago. I am now left with many hyperpigmented areas, a scar, a huge crator, and a hypertropic scar. This drug ruined my skin. I had to give a rating, but i would rate this minus one hundred, its disgusting what it did to my skin.

Pros:

I just started 10 days ago so of course im not here to write a review yet, but i had a question for 'kindal' from scottsdale.

Cons:

i am wondering if i will get an initial breakout, i have done months worth of research about spiro so i understand what im getting myself into

hopefully "Kindal" reads this because I wanted to know if you had an intitial breakout like a lot of people do. also, how long have you been using it, & you say you're on 25mg? is that all you've ever used or did you go up higher in mg? i wish there was a better way other than the message boards to ask peope questions on here! lol is your skin nice & clear now? like really clear? thanks kindal!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
