“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Less oil

Cons:

Irregular periods

This medication really does work. I am just curious as to what others use to wash their face while taking this medication?

Pros:

easy to use, reliable, safer than most things, not a regimin to follow

Cons:

didn't get on it sooner!

Daughter's been on it 3 yrs, nothing cleared up her skin until this. Terrible hormonal unbalance that went undetected until this wonderful doc in TX. I had hysterectomy and my skin went haywire. So, our fav doc put me on it and life was beautiful again. I've been on it about a yr now. Note to others who have trouble with results: my pharmacy recently switched providers for the drug and the new pills didn't work at ALL. We called and got them switched back to the old supplier and now it works like magic again. I had no idea that in our country we could get FAKE medications. Too disappointing. Don't lose the faith. Try another supplier. Maybe your pharmacy is purchasing from the same one that sent us fake pills. I know the real stuff works.

Pros:

Loss of weight
Skin is slowly getting better

Cons:

Headaches
Tired, not as much energy as usual
Weak

I've only been taking spiro for 4 weeks now. I had a massive breakout to begin with which was hard to deal with. I didn't want to go outside, i didn't participate in my usual sporting activities and didn't go out much with my friends. I felt so ugly and self conscious. I even avoided my boyfriend because i felt so terrible. Anyway, slowly my skin is improving. My pimples are not as massive (usually cystic acne on my neck, back and chest), they don't last as long and are not as deep. My skin is a bit dry and now i have many little bumps all over my jaw line. Not really pimples, kind of sand paperish. But I'm going to stick this out for three months and see when happens. I'm really hoping this time that it clears up, this has been 10years of struggling with bad skin. I'll update in a couple of weeks.

Pros:

The oiliness and number of blemishes has decreased.

Cons:

I am still having the cystic breakouts but the numbers have decreased.

I am 37 years old and suddenly started having severe breakouts on my cheeks and jawline about 7 months ago. It was so strange because it was like I would develop identical zits on each side of my face. First I thought I must be have a reaction to make-up or sunscreen so I through everything out and started fresh. Then I tried to treat myself with OTC products. Nothing worked. I finally went to a PA who works for a dermatologist and she prescribed my Spiro. I started Spiro about 6 weeks ago. My initial dose was 25mg am and pm. I was later bumped up to 50mg am and pm. I was not happy with the initial results so I requested a dose increase. I am now on 100 mg am and pm. I know I need to remain patient, but like many of you I have developed a lot of anxiety and even depression over the condition of my skin. I am praying this works.

Pros:

Helps a lot with oil

Cons:

had a tiny breakout when I first started, peeing a lot, taking it every day

I really liked this stuff. I liked not having to wash my hair all of the time. My oil was helped, but it didn't dry me out. I really didn't mind peeing all of the time since I felt like I was losing weight. I was also taking Yaz so I was taking 125mg of spiro all together.

Pros:

Works!

Cons:

Took a few months to start working/irregular periods/diuretic/hard to find a doctor that will prescribe.

Only thing that has worked long term for me. Tried everything (homeopathic/retin-A/antibiotics/accutane etc.)-nothing worked except spiro (100mg/day). Now trying to get pregnant and need to go off of it-looking at the site for alternative treatments.

Pros:

affordable, few side affects, it works!

Cons:

none

I had severe acne all over my face and body in my early teens and i took accutane to clear all of it. It worked great but i began to break out again after a year. I requested spironolactone from my dermatologist and it worked just as well as the accutane and after taking it my acne completely cleared up its awesome ide recommed it to everyone with acne.!

Pros:

With insurance it is very inexpensive, less facial oil, no more breakouts, and if I get a blemish it rarely comes to a head and heals much faster.

Cons:

None really...aside from the typcial symptoms that everyone goes through in the first 1 to 2 weeks, there's nothing to really worry about. If you are worried about your potassium levels, get tested...generally 50 mg is nothing to worry about.

I have extremely oily skin and have experienced consistent breakouts since the age of 12. I have tried antiobiotics (doxycycline), retin-A, differin, tazorac, Proactiv, OTC products...all of which have helped me to some degree, but never enough. I started on doxycycline back in May and the breakouts stopped on day one...it was amazing. I had to stop because the side effects were just too much to handle (upset stomach everyday, vomiting if food wasn't eaten within 30 min. of taking doxy, and extreme sensitivity to the sun). I heard so many great things about spiro from friends, that I decided to give it a try. My dermatologist prescribed me 50mg daily in conjunction with Retin-A Micro and so far I've had great results! I continue to have no breakouts, with the occasional blemish (maybe 2-4 within the past 2 months). I recommend this to anyone, remember that everyone reacts differently to meds, and it can take up to 3-6 months to see amazing results, so be patient! Good L

Pros:

Oil reduction

Cons:

Really really really bad breakouts in the first month or so.

When I started out taking Spiro I had one zit on my chin. Just one. During the course of taking it (it's been a little over 3 weeks) I have gotten *dozens* of zits. Now I have red scars all over my chin and forehead area. Seriously. I hardly ever leave the house and never ever look at myself in the mirror because I'm too afraid I'll start crying. When does this stuff start working? I am sick of looking awful. I'm just about at my wits end with this drug.

Pros:

I'm 34, and have incredibly oily skin and acne. This is the first product I have every tried that has dried up the oil. I've only been using it a few weeks, and have noticed marked improvement--better than anything I have ever used before.

Cons:

Dietary restrictions regarding potassium. I'm afraid to eat bananas or potatoes. I don't really know how much is too much. I also have to get up slowly when using weight machines or else I get lightheaded.

Worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
