“Spiro” has been shown to work in a real and noticeable way most of the time. However, messing with hormones is messing with hormones and it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

-Cleared up acne
-Thin blonde hair is no longer greasy!
-Weight loss, loss of water weight/bloat
-Small easy pills
-Easy to adjust perfect dose

Cons:

-Having to be on a medication for 5+ years

I recommend this product to ANYONE suffering from acne! I personally have high levels of testosterone and break out around my mouth and jaw line. While taking spironolactone my skin clears up completely and I constantly get compliments on my skin (although i know i truth)! Another major problem for me is that my hair would get extremely oily and i would take 2 showers everyday. Since using the medication I now can even skip a day of washing my hair and it still looks great without any oil. TRY THIS PRODUCT. It's affordable and easy!!

Pros:

-totally got rid of my cystic hormonal acne within the first week
-makes my skin less oily
-reduces hair growth, as it's an androgen blocker
-reduces bloating as it's also a dieuretic
-cheap as h e l l with insurance

Cons:

-minor breakout within the first week, primarily whiteheads and nothing that isn't easily dealt with
-HORRIBLE aches, pains and nausea the very first day I took it; after that initial night though I was fine
-makes you have to pee a bit more frequently
-can't take anti inflammatories or eat high amounts of potassium

I got on Spiro after my derm got tired of seeing me twice a month for cortisone injections into these massive, seemingly endless cysts that would pop up around my lip and jawlines regardless of my cycle. What would happen is that I'd get small white heads that, within a week, would turn into big monstrous creatures that wouldn't pop. Those whiteheads totally disappeared within the first week of using Spiro, and in turn so did the cysts! The general state of my skin's improved within the two weeks I've been on it too - I'd get lots of random innocuous little bumps on the lower half of my face that would just annoy me whenever I felt how uneven my skin is, and those are gone. I'm also a ridiculously hairy mofo and the androgen blocking abilities that Spiro has is very slowly thinning my facial hair growth (thank the lord) Spiro's great, despite all of the silly things you can't do (eat tons of bananas or take Aspirin), I'm so glad I found it.

Pros:

Really clear skin all over the body

Cons:

Potassium overload

I've been using this for ages and it had huge benefits for me with not just acne. My sinuses cleared, I stopped getting gout etc. I have had to lower my dose temporarily and some acne has come back. This is due to the fact that I have had a gradual increase in potassium over time and nearly had a heart attack in the street because of it. The leaflet says stay away from oranges and bananas, But I didn't know that Broccoli is really high in potassium... I would eat this 2 meals a day, six days a week. Also potatoes- sky high in potassium, maybe once a week pig out on potato. Almonds, also very high - well I'd eat a handful every day. Tomatoes and the paste, again sky high - I eat Indian mexican and Italian foods, so what do you reckon my potassium levels were? hahahah, Not to mention spinach and silverbeet, my weaknesses. I would say, monitor your potassium carefully. My first few tests were alright, so they stopped testing it. NOT good. I love it, I won't stop it, but I now have to watch what I eat Very carefully for a few weeks, to let it get back to normal. Be careful!!!

Pros:

Clears hormonal acne
Works quickly
Reduces bloating
Sex drive increased
Mood improved

Cons:

Dries skin (may be a pro for oilier skin)
Breast size increased (may be a pro for some)

I have been taking Spirinolactone for 10 days now, and I feel like I have finally found my miracle cure. I first developed acne at 13. I've been on Accutance twice, at 16 and again at 26. Both times my skin was clear for about a year afterwards, then the acne came back. I actually went to the derm to ask for another round of Accutane. She thought my acne was hormonal and suggested I try Spiro first. If it didn't work I could give Accutane another shot. Well, as it turns out she was right on the money. I'm thrilled with the results so far. I noticed an improvement within a day of starting. 10 days in, I'd say my skin is 70% clearer. All the cysts are gone (cysts on the jaw, chin and neck are a sign of hormonal acne). My back and scalp are 100% clear. I have a few small pimples on my face and chest. My skin overall feels drier and slightly rougher, but nothing that some moisturizer can't fix (nothing at all like the dry, cracked skin on Accutane!). Spiro is an androgen antagonist. It will only work if your acne is hormonally based, i.e. you have too much testosterone, and it can only be used by women. It also corrects other hormonal symptoms. My mood has improved. I feel happy and serene. My hair is softer and silkier. Bloating has gone down - I used to retain 10 lbs of water during my cycle! I'm hoping that continues to improve. The only side effects I've noticed are sometimes feeling light-headed and sleepy, but it's very mild and goes away quickly. And I do feel a little bit thirstier, but I just drink more water. If you have hormonal acne, please give Spiro a shot. For me, it's been a total win. I take 100mg a day.

Pros:

Nearly no more acne
Suspect my singing voice is better...???!!!

Cons:

Drink a lot
Not knowing long term side effects
Danger of fetal damage if you get pregnant

Was about to spend MORE $$$ on gimmick products that I just knew would not work so am thrilled to have found this. Not even the pill worked as well as this and the pill makes me fat and stuffs me around too much (apart from the fact that it is an abortifacient - see studies on ectopic preg against the pill) Am in that category of woman who has had acne all her life, but after 30 it started getting WORSE (also after the birth of child no. 2). Just got totally fed up when I started getting them on my EARLOBES, let alone everywhere else on my face. Went on this after finding these reviews and seeing woman in my exact situation having success. Am on 75mg (3 tablets) a day. 2 does not work for me. Still get about 2 little ones a day but don't care and would rather not go up to 100mg if I don't have to. Went through the typical 4 months or so before it really started to work. Have now been on it 8 months and am in love. I can run my hands over my skin and it feels soft and smooth. Next step was I had ILP Photorejuvenation which hurts like hell but took about 10 years off my face by removing acne scarring and pigmentation that got really bad after taking spiro (but also after birth of 2nd child so not sure which caused it). Now a light dusting of mineral powder and eyeliner and I feel like I could do a photo shoot.

Pros:

Clears hormonal acne almost 100%, lost a pound or two of water weight, results are seen fairly quickly - within 1-2 months

Cons:

None that I can see

Like many others on here - I have suffered with moderate acne since 14 and now at 32 I was still getting bad breakouts... I too had tried everything imaginable with only minimal results... I starting doing research and found spironolactone... I knew my acne was hormonal due to when & and where on my face I get it... I wanted to get to the root of the problem and not just address the symptoms... Now I wash 2 x a day with Cetaphil Cleanser (for normal/oily skin) Neutrogena Grapefruit Salycylic wash (3 times a week) Apply Cetaphil 50spf moisturizer (every morn) 75 mg of spiro (every morn) Flinstone Multivitamin (every morn) Differin gel .03% (every other night) Eye cream (every night) I am 90 - 95% acne free for the first time in my life!!!! Spiro is the REAL difference and the real deal....

Pros:

I just started getting acne when I turned 30. I had never had acne ever before. I did not know what was going on. I tried several things-birth control, face washes, acne medication, and I took tetracycline for years. I am now 33 and I had finally had it. I was starting to get nodular acne and I just could not take it anymore. My Dr. suggested taking spironolactone. I was unsure about this but thought I would give it a try. It has been 2 months now and it has completely transformed my life.

Cons:

The price is only $5

My skin is completely clear. I have never felt so good about myself. My confidence level has increased 2 fold. This is something that needs to be well known to everyone who is suffering from hormonal acne. I hope that the word spreads quickly.

Pros:

Got rid of the two lone hairs on my chin immediately!
Kept acne at bay.
May have regrown hair around my temples.
Larger breasts (this can be a con).

Cons:

Can't tolerate more than 25 mgs. a day.

Terrified of getting high potassium

Palpitations
Leg cramps
Messed up my period.
Bone pain

It is definitely worth a shot! A good med, just not for me. The palpitations scared the hell outta me. That is what made me stop. I was only on 25 mgs a day. I tried going up to 50 but both times I had to stop due to scary side effects (palpitations, low BP). I think since it takes magnesium and calcium out of your body that that is what was causing my leg cramping and occasional bone pain. I wasn't on a high dose, but I had two little hairs on my chin and they went away in a month, which was surprising. I think my hair started to grow back where I had lost it on my head. I was TERRIFIED of my potassium getting high, and as a result, I refused to eat my diet which is high in potassium -- veggies, fruits, meats, kefir, avocado, salads. This was very depressing for me because I LOVE these foods. I cannot wait to be able to eat them again in huge amounts! So excited, lol. It works for acne. Definitely try it. I am moving on to a different anti androgen that doesn't mess with potassium, BP, calcium, magnesium, and periods. I hope it works safely for me. I had mild acne. I also paid more for the brand name because Dr. Redmond (famous dr. for hormonal treatment) said it works better than generic. If you don't have insurance, get it at walmart and have tour dr. give you a rx for 25 mg pills so it is only 4$. The 50/100 mg pills are not $4. The brand name is also NOT 4$. Good luck!! :-)

Definitely noticing significant results, positive results.
I knew I had a serious problem when I started staring at myself in the mirror trying not to cry. I hated what I saw, 27 year old with the face of a pubescent teenager. I never struggled with acne, so when the painfully large cysts started lining my jaw I was confused. These stay for months, always there, and then start migrating their way to my cheeks. I've had the occasional blemish on my forehead, nose, and chin.. but never my cheek; also those blemishes actually had an expiration date. Like I said before, I knew I had problem when my own reflection was painful to see. I'm not a vain person, but I didn't like who I was becoming, obsessive. Everything revolved around it; what I ate, where I went, who I let see me, and how many hour wasted searching for cures.. and how much money spent on them. Aright, so, on with my review.. I started with birth control, Zovia 1/35E. I lot of people haven't heard of it, but maybe they should. That time of the month- pshh.. it's a breeze now. No weight or mood changes. It helped with smaller blemishes, but not the results I was hoping for. Finally, I decided to seek out a professional. Not sure why I didn't run to find a dermatologist first.. maybe because I was ashamed of how much control it had on my self-confidence? I was prescribed Spironolactone 50mg to help with the cystic acne taking over the lower half of my face.. and also to help another problem caused by increased levels of androgens- dark thick hair on my chin that arrived with the acne, which I was too embarrassed to even bring up. My doctor brought up that subject. I was also prescribed a topical cream, Onexton. I was scared of the topical, after waking up after using it the first night, my cheeks were red and hurt like a they had been burned. I spread out my use of it and slowly made my way to being able to use it nightly (PEA size amout for the entire face!). Over three months have gone by and I'm amazed. No, my face is not 100% clear, but the months old cysts are finally disappearing, no new surprise cyst party lining up long my jaw and no more self loathing. I know I just shared a lengthy and unnecessary story, but it feels good being able to discuss it, and hopefully give hope to people suffering the emotional and physical pain accompanied with acne.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
