What Is It?

Sarecycline, sold under the brand name Seysara®, is an oral antibiotic that works by fighting bacteria in the body, including in the skin, and also reduces inflammation. It should be used only short term (max. 3 months). Sarecycline is distinguished by its narrow spectrum of activity, aiming to minimize the impact on the body’s beneficial bacteria.

Sarecycline is similar to other oral antibiotics prescribed for acne (doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline) but is much more expensive, and based on studies thus far, works less well. Like other antibiotics, it should be used for a maximum of 3 months, provides only moderate benefit and only to some people, and may lead to side effects and strains of resistant bacteria.
