Topical Keratolytic
Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

It makes your skin feeling nice and clean.

Cons:

It stings a little, but not too much.

It helped clear up my acne; but I still used other things besides this and a cleanser. I use deep cleansing masks that you find at Walmart. You find them by the lotion and stuff, not by the face cleansers. They are single packaged, cost about a dollar or two (they are clay based). I used them everyday for about a week and my acne went from a 30+ pimples to 5 pimples! But the thing is, you HAVE to moisturize!!! And guess what?! I stopped cleansing my face at night for about 5 days (I really have to cleanse my face at night and in the morning because I have very oily skin) and I still had only a few pimples!! But the thing is, you have to use clean your face (use this Biore stuff and some good moisturizer too) and use the mask once every week.

Pros:

For isolated break outs, i.e. for people without a full blown cause of Acne, its great. Put some on, anmd leave it...the pimple starts to dry out within 8 hours. May have to reply 2x.

Cons:

There may be some irritation, depending on your skin type. I'm fair, so it can feel liek its burning soemtimes and yes, there may be some redness, but its worth it in teh end.

As long as your not broken out all over the place, its great for keeping a few pimples under control.

Not the greatest acne remover

Pros:

-Worked like a cham for me until a few years ago.

Cons:

-It doesn't work for me anymore.

This was the best product for me all through junior high and high school. I used to swear by it. The chemistry of my skin has changed and my acne has taken a turn for the worst not, and this product is no longer enough. I love this stuff. It makes the skin feel really clean because of the tingle, but it is not overly drying.

Pros:

-Clears up forehead pimples
-White heads as well as some black heads
-Doesn't dry out skin severly

Cons:

-Works slowly (about two weeks plus)
-Ran out quickly because pads stick together

The cleansing pads work well but the only thing was it worked slowly and didn't clear up very much. But, after I got out of the shower, I scrubbed my face lightly (scrub off dead skin the can clog pores and aggrivate skin) then used the pads and it stung a little but what product that cleans pores won't? Then I applied ZapZit (THE GEL KIND) on the slightly open pore, went to bed, woke up ib the morning and it had gone down 70%! With consistent use and then use of the Oxy Daily Cleaner, you'll have clearer skin and healthier habits in no time.

Pros:

It smells great!!!...It's very consistent and it has made my skin MUCH more clearer...and just coming into the teenage years I most definitely need Biore!!! Or just about anything that'll help my acne!!!...and in WEEKS...my skin improved!!!...xD...

Cons:

Ugh!!!...the price is COMPLETELY unecessary based on the amount of scrub in the bottle...and I find the micro beads on my hairline of nose...and it annoys the crap out of me...but anyway that's just about the only Cons that I have...but i love Biore!

Awesome skin care product!!!...xD...

slight sting upon application, but i actually dont mind that because you can tell its actually doing something.

i have extremely sensitive skin and this is one of the few products i can use without causing severe skin problems- cracking burning etc...would recommend to everyone! I am extremely pleased with this product!

Cons:

Stings a little bit, but not too bad.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
