Acne.org’s Real World Take
Easy to find and with low side effects, but don’t be surprised if you are left wishing for better results after using it for a while. Any acid on its own is unlikely to dramatically clear acne.

Pros:

natural soy complex
light creamy feeling
get's rid of discoloration (hyper-pigmentation)
salicylic acid treatment
affordable
easy to apply

Cons:

can ball up if used with any topical medications
has a fragrance (that is pleasant to some!)

I love this moisturizer - I'm big on facial products (have tried them all!) and by far I swear by Aveeno's products. I use this moisturizer along with Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 - and together the two (along with Benzaclin and Retin A) have cleared my face completely. I had moderate/sever acne (now I have very light) and my dermatologist recommended that I try these both out and I would recommend them to anyone suffering from acne ( I've experienced the embarrassment, the frustration, anger and sadness it has caused and I would only recommend and share the best!) If you can get it on Amazon or another more affordable website - get it there. I live in Manhattan and it is about $20 where as Target, Walmart, and other stores have it for around $14.

Pros:

easy to use, no water needed, very effective at clearing skin.

Cons:

none really...

i started breaking out about a month ago for some inexplicable reason... my skin care routine at the time wasn't helping in the slightest. i went down to cvs and got these. within about a week, i had remarkably clearer skin. this works faster at clearing problematic skin than anything else i've used, and i've used everything from neutrogena, to aveeno, to clean & clear... this by far works this best. people seem to think these are excessively drying, though i honestly haven't experienced that. granted, i wouldn't skip using a moisturizer while using these, but this stuff isn't any harsher than anything else i've used.

Pros:

Cleared my acne
Smoothed my skin
Gentle feeling but hardworking
Fades scars slightly
Fast working

Cons:

Pump gets stuck

Cleared my skin after proactive made it worse, PLEASE try this first. I barely ever get a pimple now. I had about 20 zits on my face when I started using this and more kept popping up every day. I was so depressed and thought nothing would fix this, like I was in a losing war with my face. In about a week after using this product I could clearly see a reduction from 20 to 14 then 10 then 6, 3, and finally 0 it was like a miracle. This made my skin so soft and smooth with no irritation. Not even little bumps.

Pros:

Makes skin feel sooo soft after washing off!
Exfoliates
Smells good
Faded acne quite a bit

Cons:

Didn't help get rid of blackheads

This is a great choice for an exfoliating scrub, and you should use it 3-4 times a week. I personally think it helps with pimples and making skin feel soft, but it didn't help with blackheads at all.

Pros:

-Leaves face feeling fresh
-Clears acne immediately

Cons:

-Stops working after about a year
-Does not get rid of Scarring

I loved this stuff. It was the only thing that ever fixed my skin that I bought from the store. Unfortunately my miracle product stopped working and I got the worst breakouts I have ever had that resulted in lots of scarring and self-esteem issue. I finally went to a dermatologist and am on prescription strength stuff. Definitely give this stuff a try...it does work, it worked for me, it just didn't work forever.

Pros:

great smell and works fast

Cons:

leaves skin a little dry and doesn't help with acne scars

I'm 23 years old and have been dealing with mild to moderate acne since i was 12. I've most likely used everything out there that you can think of (including proactive). Nothing was working for me until a friend reccomended this product to me. I noticed a difference right away! The redness was gone and the pimple size was going down right before my eyes! The products have a nice peppermint smell to them and make your skin smooth and tight. I also take the supplement that was provided with the package which is once a day with a meal. The only negative thing really is it drys out your skin a bit. But it did state that on the lable, so it's not like i wasn't expecting it. Otherwise, great product!

Pros:

Agrees with my skin, Smells great, doesn't dry out my skin, AMAZING clean feeling!

Cons:

So far hasn't done much for blackheads.

I have used this for about a week... the best part is the fresh super clean feel you get when you use it. Make sure to moisturise! I only use this at night to get the days makeup/dirt off. It really does work. It has not made my acne flare up, in fact, it seems to have made it milder. It hasn't caused any redness. Just a great product. One happy customer.

Pros:

Doesn't dry at all; reduces some redness; helps acne if consistently used; appropriate for dry to combination skins.

Cons:

Very thick; too much menthol; reduces acne slowly; doesn't remove makeup.

This product is good if you have mild to moderate acne and some time on your hands. For about the first week, you won't see any real results. After washing with this morning and night (along with my Clarisonic Mia), toning and using my favorite oil-free moisturizer, my skin feels perfectly balanced and calm, which is a major plus. I definitely don't break out worse when I use this (which often happens to me when I find a wash that is moisturizing) and it feels quite nice, but you won't be shocked by any amazing results until maybe 3 weeks into use. However, my acne IS diminished, so I guess it does have some possitive effect in that field. I would recommend this is your skin is dry to normal/combination, but if you are quite oily, try the gel version.

Pros:

Smells so scrumptious
Works like a charm
Evened out sun spots and took away blemishes

Cons:

Got a rash cause I used too much and my face got super dry...eheheh.

Since I live in Hawaii I'm out in the sun a lot so I get sun spots on my face. This cleanser toned my face amazingly. I don't have acne, just the occasional pimple shows up and this greatly decreased it. My nose also looks a lot more smoother and my face overall has that milky nice look! So bottom line is it's awesome yo.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
