Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

much less cramping, clears acne, lighter periods

Cons:

i have had none, and it's my second time using... i used it when i was 17/18 and now i am 25.

Ortho Tri Cyclen works well for clearing up acne... and i noticed that many of the people complaining it didn't use LO... not the same! that's why it's a different pill called LO! I have heard many cons about OTC Lo, i would never try it myself. it helped clear my teenage acne and at my age now, i recently developed a hormonal burst possibly due to excessive stress and age, and after one cycle of being back on orth tri cyclen NOT LO my face is almost completely clear again, and it was bad along my jawline and such!

Pros:

Prevents preganancy, regular periods, no acne, no cramps, bigger breasts

Cons:

gained a little weight...nothing major

I have been on Yasmn for about 2 months now. My periods have been on time, hardly any break through spotting except for my first month, no cramps and acne and my breast cup size has increased. yasmin so far is doing a great job. What I advise to other people who are on Yasmin or abou to go on Yasmin is that everybody's body is different. It will take a while for some people's body to react to changes compared to others. give Yasmin a little more time for those who are just startin like me before you make a change or switch.

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

EVERYTHING

DO NOT USE BIRTH CONTROL FOR ACNE AND IF YOU DO, DO NOT STOP IT UNTIL YOU WANT TO CONCIEVE. MY SKIN WAS PERFECT AND I WENT ON ORTHO-LO SO I WOULDNT GET PREGNANT AND I WENT OFF IT BECAUSE OF HOW MOODY I WAS. LET ME TELL YOU THAT WENT OFF IT, I DISCOVERED MY FIRST PIMPLE AND WITHIN A MONTH I HAD FULL BLOWN ACNE EVERYWHERE! I WENT ON REGULAR ORTHO, CLEARED MY SKIN UP IN 4 MONTHS BUT MADE ME GAIN ABOUT 10 POUNDS. WENT OFF IT, ACNE TEN TIMES WORSE THEN EVER. MY FRIEND ALSO GAINED 30 POUNDS WITH YASMIN. THE SIDE EFFECTS OF BIRTHCONTROLS ARE NOT WORTH IT AND EVERY SINGLE TYPE OF BIRTH CONTROL HAS NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS.. GO TO A DERMATOLIGIST FOR YOUR ACNE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros:

MY SKIN IS CLEAR AND I AM NOT PREGNANT.

Cons:

SEX DRIVE IS VERY LOW!THE INTEREST LEVEL IN THAT DEPARTMENT IS TOTALLY GONE.AFTER STARTING OTC MY CHARACTER HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED.MOODSWINGS,DEPRESSION,MIGRAINES,ETC.WORST OF ALL IS WEIGHT GAIN!

EVERYONES BODY RESPONDS DIFFERENTLY TO CERTAIN BIRTH CONTROLS.IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SIDE AFFECTS OF YOUR BIRTH CONTROL,GET YOURS CHANGED IMMEDIATELY.ALL I KNOW IS I HAVE'T GOT PREGNANT YET AND THAT MY PERIODS LAST LONGER THAN 7 DAYS WHICH I DO NOT LIKE AT ALL.BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG I DO PLAN ON TRYING A NEW BIRTH CONTROL ASAP.JUST REMEMBER THAT ONLY YOU CAN DECIDE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
