Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

No Migraines, No Weight Gain, No Mood Swings

Cons:

Dry and patchy skin, breakouts on chin & forehead

I've been on Yasmin for more than two years now - it's been quite a roller coaster ride... At first it was amazing. Skin cleared up, lost weight, loads of energy and no moods. Now, for the first time in two years, I've noticed pigmentation on my skin (like when I was pregnant). I'm also getting quite a bad skin breakout. The last time my skin looked this bad was when I hit puberty...Someone suggested that it might be the Yasmin causing it. I don't want to change my pill. I've been on two others and I was misserable, bloated, moody and had constant headaches.

Pros:

I have been using this for about 10 months now and am very happy with it. My skin has completely cleared up and my breasts are even a little bigger!

Cons:

I hate having to take a pill everyday - if only the IUD had the same skin clearing benefits...

I also started taking spironolactone at the same time which I think also really helped wih clearing up my skin.

Pros:

increased libido, weight loss, less irritable, less acne

Cons:

high blood pressure sometimes nausea

I had severe and I mean severe cystic acne from my face to my chest and back, I've tried everything except accutane (too dangerous) and nothing worked. My derm. finally told me to go on Yasmine and after 4 months I went back and I had a little bit of improvement, but after 10 months on Yasmine I feel like crying and screaming in joy I have beautiful clear movie star skin! Honestly I never thought as severe as my skin was that it would ever look good again. All you have to do is stick with Yasmine, but still maintain a good skin regiment , I use murad and I try to eat well.

Pros:

Bigger boobs, short and light periods

Cons:

insomnia, weight gain, severe acne, sharp, shooting pains in my breasts.

I came to this site hoping to find some other people who have experienced a huge increase in acne since starting Yasmin. When I switched from Yasmin (1 month) to Ocella (1 month) I went from very mild acne to moderate/severe. I dont want to wait it out for another 2 months to see if it clears up, since the scaring is just now clearing after I stopped taking it for a week. I am not sure what kind of reaction I had, but it was almost instantaneous as soon as I started Ocella. Secondly, my boobs swelled up almost a full cup size. Which I thought was great since I am pretty petite. But the pain is almost unbearable. I wake up from the pain in the night if I sleep on my stomach. I cant exercise and I dont enjoy them being touched. Hugs even hurt! I dont know if I risk being put back onto Yasmin to see if things clear up or if the effects of Ocella were really that different from Yasmin. I have been on birth control for ten years and never had such violent reactions to any p

Pros:

acne cleared compared to the topical treatments

Cons:

late periods, moodswings, small break outs and occasional cystic, weight gain

I have tried almost everything when it comes to acne: herbal, topical, over the counter, as seen on tv and while the ortho lo has helped tremendously for my acne the side effects might not be worth it and I'm even considering switching over to yasmin. I have so much trouble losing weight its unbelievable and the moodswings bizzare and erratic.

Pros:

Clearer skin, shorter, lighter periods

Everyone needs to stop bashing Yasmin if they have not used it for more than 3 months. With any good acne product, your skin is going to get worse before it gets better.

Pros:

Cleared up my mild acne and I did not gain weight.

Cons:

Since it's low hormone, you have to take it at the exact same time every day or you will have break-through bleeding and mild cramping and the cost is high even with most insurance since there is no generic form as of yet.

THIS IS A RATING FOR ORTHO TRI-CYCLENE LO! I came here to try to find reviews for Tri-nessa and OTC regular but after reading the reviews I have decided to go back on OTC-lo immediately b/c I've been on Tri-Nessa (way cheaper) for only 10 days and acne is back and have gained 4 pounds. I wanted to give ADVICE TO ACNE SUFFERERS as well. I have had mild acne/severe break outs (however you want to look at it) since I was 15. I am now 24 years old and finally found a sure fix for it just within the last six months. 1) I use Clinique 3 step system. Excpet I subsitute the face soap with Clinique Acne Solutions Foaming Cleanser 2) I use Clinique Perfectly Real Powder Compact for a base foundation (with lots of the 3rd step lotion first since it can be drying). 3) OTC-lo I know it sounds like a Clinique endorsement but it's the ONLY thing that has worked for me. I even tried Pro-Activ to no avail. I found the foundation was the key (and my last miracle step) as it di

Very mixed feelings about it
Originally I was prescribed Diane 35 by my dermatologist, but I decided to go with Yaz eventually because it has a lower dose of estrogen as well as a shorter 4-day period. Now I have been on Yaz for around 6 months already. While I don't really regret choosing it over Diane 35, I have to say that I do have very mixed feelings about the results that I am getting. First of all, here are the pros and cons of Yaz for me. Pros: - No weight gain at all - Sex drive remaining there - Gradually lighter period - Increased breast size - Reduction in oil production of skin Cons: - Increased anxiety level - Increased irritability - Mood swings - Breakthrough bleeding - Cystic Acne remaining there I didn't really get an initial breakout from Yaz. For the first few months I did notice some strange things happening to my skin. For example, during the 2nd month for about a week my skin went from super oily to super dry with zero oil production. But very quickly it went back to normal. Yaz has really helped me greatly in reducing the oil production of my skin. Prior to taking it, I couldn't get by one or two hours without looking like a complete oil slick. But now the oiliness of my skin is very normal and in acceptable level, even though I still consider myself having oily and acne prone skin. However, Yaz has so far failed to clear me up. Somewhere from the middle of the 4th month I have started to break out more and now I have been breaking out really badly in cystic acne. I am not certain whether the sudden onset of cystic acne is directly caused by Yaz or other factors though. Emotionally it has been a roller coaster for me in the past few months. Although I don't think Yaz is to be blamed alone for all my anxiety / irritability / depression, I do believe that it plays a part in affecting my moodiness more or less. And I really think that anyone with a family history of anxiety or depression issue should be very very cautious with hormonal treatment. Anyway I am going to stick with Yaz for another 3 months maybe, just to see if my cystic acne will improve or get worse. If it gets really out of control or doesn't have any improvement after that, maybe I will consider switching to another brand, maybe Diane 35, who knows!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
