Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Shorter, lighter, predictable periods. No mood swings, no acne.

Cons:

***Frequent yeast infections!!!***

Great pill except for the fact that I will get a yeast infection every week except for the week on my period! Went to the doctors, they couldn't tell me anything. No burning or itching, just thick, pasty white discharge. Vaginal dryness was also a problem. Changing birth control pill this month...can't take it anymore. Would recommend this pill IF you don't get the recurring infection.

Pros:

My boobs are huge! And I still have a sex drive

Cons:

So far I feel REALLY bloated

I have only been on the pill for one week. I know with any medication aimed to help your acne it takes up to 3 months to kick in, however; i havent had any NEW breakouts (cross my fingures!) Im going to keep going and hope for the best. I will also write another review in a few weeks.

Pros:

shorter, lighter periods, less acne, decreased appetite

Cons:

nausea, vomiting, stomach problems

I like this pill, I just don't like throwing up and feeling sick all the time. But at least I haven't gained any weight.

Pros:

none so far

Cons:

Acne, hunger, and ramdon abdominal pain.

Just started the pill and I broke out on my face, back, and chest. I get random abdominal pain and I'm hungry all the time. Gained 4lbs within 3 weeks. This never happened before.

Pros:

None that I know of

Cons:

mysterious leg pain a week into taking it

I bought into the stupid ad's and switched from Yasmin to Yaz to see if if would really help my mood etc. A week into taking it I got a mysterious pain throughout my left leg. This could have been the very beginning of a clot. I'm a healthy 24 year old non-smoker with no history of anything like that - i went off it immediately and the pain went away within a few days.

Pros:

cleared up my acne when nothing else would, no side affects with me

Cons:

u have to get blood work done everymonth females must be on birth control and

FOR ALL U PPL OUT THERE WITH BAD ACNE!Im 24 i had horriable acne since i was 13 nothing would help it creams, anitbiotics, nothig.my acne was so bad sometime i would get these cystic pimples that would cause my face to swell up like a chipmunk so finially My dermatologist put me on ACUTANE ask ne one who has used it,it's a miracle drug it starts clearing up in 2 to 3 months by the 6th month ur face will be completely clear i guarentee that. Then after 6 months your face stays clear forever and you stop the medication. i know a few other ppl who also had bad acne and used this medication and they had the same results.the only down side is its a serious drug so u have to do blood work every month to make sure every thing is good and females must be on birth control cause you absolutely cannot get pregnat until u've been off of it for atleast 6 months.but to have a clear face it was definetly worth it.to get it so if nothing has worked for u i promise this will just ask dermatolgist for it

Cons:

Nauseas
Migraines
Bumps on my face, acnes getting worse.

I've been nauseas everyday since starting. I'm getting little bumps on my face. I've been getting terrible headaches. So far I strongly dislike this product. Im on my 3rd week taking it.
January 5, 2012

Pros:

-Works well as birth control
-Does not cause nausea like some bc pills do

Cons:

-Developed large painful back acne
-Sever face break outs.

Started this pill about two weeks ago and everything about is spectacular. Aside from the fact that my face broke out terribly. Everyone's skin is different this may work for someone else.
November 23, 2011

Pros:

Only $10 with health insurance

Cons:

Unbearable nausea
Headaches
Stomach cramping
Constipation
No noticeable change in acne

I got on this in the hopes that it would help my acne. I have hardly ever had acne except for the occasional breakout and then suddenly got a major flair up back in June (I am 19). Please note that when they mention that the pills may cause "pregnancy symptoms", they mean it. I had the absolute worst morning/afternoon sickness accompanied with occasional headaches, stomach cramping, and constipation. To top it all off, my acne didn't budge. My doctor said that the sickness and other symptoms were due to the fact that this pill distributes different levels of hormones every day, kind of going up and down like a sea saw. This tends to make some women sick, apparently. It didn't work for me, but it might work for you. For me, it was hell. I would rather my worst period than this stuff.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
