Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Not pregnant, breasts are huge, weight loss, and skin partially clearing up.

Cons:

Horrible stomach pains, nausea/ loss of appetite, headache, loss of sex drive, skin not clearing up fast enough...seems stagnant.

The night I decided to start the new pill I read on here the pros and cons. Sometimes the cons outweighed the pros, which scared me. But, hell, I'm adventurous, I tried it anyway. So far, no babies, a little bit better skin, no CRAZY hormonal fits and my breasts grew two cups (my boyfriend is very pleased). The stomach pains, nausea/no appetite and loss of sex drive is something I can do without. But, I'm sure it will get better. All I want now is my skin to get better. I'm sure it just takes time. =/

Pros:

Well, Im not pregnant...

Cons:

ACNE!

I have NEVER had acne in my life until I took this medication. And it makes me nautious.

Pros:

less cramping, lighter periods, clearer skin

Cons:

depression, mood swings, nausea, decreased sex drive

It worked fine for a while, then I stopped taking it for several months and when I started again I had terrible side effects. It did help clear my skin, but at the expense of physical/emotional health. After I stopped taking it for good my skin was worse than it had been before the pill.

Pros:

The only pro I can give this product is that I haven't beocme pregnant while on it.

Cons:

I have been taking Yasmin for about 6 months now and my acne had only worsened, I have noe sexual interest with my boyfriend anymore, and I am constantly depressed.

I want to know if it has been proven to do all of these things, and if so why would anyone prescribe it.
March 21, 2008

Pros:

no weight gain, no babies

Cons:

skin got worse, emotional

I used to take Dianne for my skin, but it made me put on weight far too easily so changed to yasmin. Iv lost weight since changing but the acne has got worse. Iv only been on it for 3 months. Will my skin clear if i stick it out for a few more months? is there another pill which will help clear my skin but not make me put on weight as easily as dianne does?

Pros:

No babies, Cleared acne, no weight gain, gave me a more womanly figure, periods were normal and always at the same time.

Cons:

Anxiety.

Worked really great for me! It even made me less hairy haha! I guess it really depends whether or not its right for you. It never gave me extra acne, no mood swings. One time i took 2 pills in one day by accident (this was the first day back on the pill) and i barfed all night long.

Pros:

cramps are gone, period is predicatble,

Cons:

hasn't done nothing for my acne

Yasmin is my first birth control and honestly i dont' feel anything most users described (depression, anxiety, ect) . The only thing i hated was it didnt' do anything for my face, of which was the whole reason i started yasmin and of course my cramps. i been on yasmin for about 5 or 6 months.

Pros:

Regular periods. No cramping. No weight gain. No acne.

Cons:

Increase in mood swings towards the end of the month just before starting my period. I use to use Loestrin and did not experience this. Periods are also longer and heavier on Yasmine than Loestrin Fe 1/20. No weight gain or acne on either pil

I have been on Yasmine for 2 years. I was on the one previous to this (Loestrin) for 6 years and only switched because I was on the other for a while and didnt want its effectivness to decrease. Yasime is a good pill but for me I have experienced more emotional swings than the other pill. Pills effect everyone differently.

Pros:

predictable periods

Cons:

made acne much much worse!! made me more emotional. lower sex drive.

I personally would not recommend this to anyone. I've never had acne this bad in my life, I've never had such problems controlling my emotions and it's kind of a pain not having the same drive as i did before.

Pros:

short periods, hmm thats about it

Cons:

didn't clear acne. hair loss (yes I said hair loss!)

Taking this pill is not worth it. I have taken it for 4 months and it has not taken care of my acne. It reduced it some, but I am not willing to use it any longer since I am losing tons of hair in the shower everyday. Girls out there - Beware - hair loss is a common side effect that they don't talk about much...

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
