Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

No Pregnancy.

Cons:

Variable periods (sometimes 3 days, sometimes 7). Horrible mood swings. Uncontrolable crying at times. Severe anger issues. Very low sex drive.

I've been taking Yasmine for about two years (with a break for pregnancy.) Just in the last few months my moods have taken a horrible turn. My husband and I argue alot. I want to go off of it before it hurts my relationship with him and our children.

Pros:

no pregnancy, convenient

Cons:

daughter experienced severe mood swings, anger, depression, couldn't get along with anyone, when she went off it because of a found breast lump which she had removed, she now has moderate acne which she never had at all before.

The list of women who complain of mood swings worries me that my daughter will once again "not be her sweet self" and turn into a hormonal maniac! I wonder if it will clear up her acne soon!!

Pros:

It can clear acne.

Cons:

It can also cause stomach discomfort and mood swings.

I had been searching for years for something that would clear my acne. When I came across ortho tri-cyclen and its claims I decided to give it a try. It cleared up my skin within a month. The doctor then switched me to the Ortho-Lo (for what reasons I don't know) and my skin brokeout ridiculously. Then I switched back to the regular strength and it cleared up my skin within a month.I was also using Proactiv which I believed helped with the overall clarity of my skin but when using it without the ortho didn't stop breakouts. Well after having my baby ten months ago I decided to get back on the pill and I did not see ANY results. In fact my skin was even more inflammed! And on top of that, I had extreme stomach discomfort. I have decided to stick with it and after my fourth pack my skin has finally stopped breaking out as much. The bottom line is that I believe if you stop taking it and start back you could experience different results for a while but just stick with it and it should work!

Pros:

None

Cons:

Excessive periods (every 2 weeks), numbness in patches all over my body.

About 2 weeks after I started taking Yasmin, I noticed the skin on and around my knee was numb. The numb patch continued to spread over the next 6 months all the way up my thigh. In the meantime, I started going numb in other patches all over my body. I visited everyone under the sun from chiropractors, doctors and neurologists and spent thousands of $$$ on tests, including MRIs and nerve conduction studies where they send electrical signals through your skin and measure them (and it really hurts). I was told I might have ovarian cysts, Multiple Sclerosis or even a brain tumour. After 6 months I finally correlated the start of my symptoms with when I started taking Yasmin. Within a few weeks of stopping Yasmin, I started to gain feeling back. 2 years later I still have a small numb patch on my knee, but have regained feeling everyhwere else. When my doctor contacted Schering they said it wasn't a known symptom and refused to accept that my symptoms were caused by Y

Pros:

Takes away cramps during periods.

Cons:

I feel as though I gained a few pounds, nothing serious.

I have been using OTC for 2 years and I have been nothing but satisfied with it. I used to get unbearable pains during my period. So bad I would not be able to sleep at night. Once I started used OTC I feel absolutely no cramps. I feel as though I gained a few pounds, probably not noticeable to anyone but myself. However, that could be do to anything. My sex drive descreased a little, but it's still there!

Pros:

My period is somewhat normal now (have tried several other birth control pills only to have increased periods, like one ongoing continuous period). But I've only been on it for 1.5 months, so maybe its still too early to tell.

Cons:

Drastic increase in acne! Cheeks and jawline. I have significant scars now. It hasn't been this way since teenager. And to think I went on this cause I thought it would clear up my acne.

Some say good, some say bad. From what I've read this is not a safe bet. Those that have bad experiences say "Don't try it." Then there are those that have had "good" experiences at first only to develop severe acne after quitting. I'd say if you have strong reactions to other pills then you should stay clear of this one too.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
