Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

lost weight, regular periods

Cons:

ACNE!! anxiety, moodines, yeast infections, low sex drive

I was on the Ortho LO for five months for problems with ovarian cysts. Until the pill, my acne was under control. However, on the pill, my skin broke out uncontrollably! nothing I put on my face made a difference! Also, I was an emotional mess!!!! crying, moody, anxious...I definitely would not recommend this pill to anyone. It made my life hell...and it took me awhile to figure out what was the cause of everything. I feel so much better off of this damn pill.

Pros:

prevents pregnancy

Cons:

My skin has started braking out a lot, I hardly EVER had pimples before taking yasmin but hey I guess everyones different

The first month went ok other than the increased mood swings but that lasted about a week. But now Im almost done with the second pack and havnt stopped bleeding since I started it, and Im due for my period again in a few days, as a matter of fact I think I may have started today cuz cramping got worse but I cant tell, its that bad, im getting a little concerned. guess Ill ride it out through the third month and see what happens and see if I need to change brands or get off, hopefully the acne will subside too.

Pros:

It keeps you from getting pregnant. I didn't even have a scare.

Cons:

MOOD SWINGS!!!

I'm normally a pretty carefree person and have a boyfriend for 2 and a half years that I love. I noticed just in 3 weeks that I seriously felt like I was taking crazy pills. I had never even considered breaking up with my boyfriend because he's amazing and then all of a sudden I'm flying into these rages because he was late from work, but he was only a little late. Normally that would be no big deal. Also, I go into these crying fits, in the last 2 years I have cried 2 times. In the last 3 weeks I've cried at least 5 times. I'm not normally an emotional, but this is rediculous. It wasn't just the boyfriend either, it was work, school...you name it.

Pros:

Lighter, shorter periods

Cons:

moodiness, no change in acne

I started taking yasmin about a month and a half ago just for my back acne. So far not much has changed, and it seems some days it's actually gotten worse. My face is a little bit better, but no outstanding difference. Im a bit dissapointed. I'll stay on it for another month and see if it changes, if not, I will stop taking Yasmin.

March 13, 2008

Pros:

honestly...none for me

Cons:

increased acne, extremely sore breasts, weight gain, depression so bad that i don't want to leave the house, crying spells, irritability, heavy periods that last much longer than before...

I was put on this pill by my Derm. to treat my acne. I was previously on Allesse for about 6 years and loved it!!!! No complaints there. This is the end of my 2nd month of Yasmin and I thought I was going crazy until I started looking around on the net. Turns out I'm not alone. My acne is so bad right now that I have actually made an appt with my MD to discuss Accutane. My breasts are so painful and enlarged that it actually hurts to wash them in the shower. I am extremely active so this poses a huge problem and also makes no sense that I have gained about 10 lbs in the past 2 months. A friend has a good experience with this pill and is urging me to stick it out for one more month but there is no way. I hate this pill. I have three left in this pack and then I will be back on Allesse. Praying everything goes back to normal.

Pros:

kinda clears up your skin, super light periods!!, bigger boobs

Cons:

weight gain/bloating, you feel fat, it hardly works with acne

overall, i liked this cause it made my boobs bigger (i'm 16) but it also made me bloated. i've always been skinny but when i was on this it made me feel fat. i loved it cause of the boob growth (it only made me like half a cup size bigger but still i was happy) and the amazingly light periods! i went on it only cause of acne (i'm not sexually active) and it worked kind of. i guess it's a tiny bit better but i still have acne and major scars. you might want to try it but it hardly worked for me but it didn't make it worse but it gave me lots of scars. however, i still want to stay on it just cause of the light periods! now i'm going on accutane which will (hopefully) work, wish me luck! =) oh and i think the cost was fine but my parents paid for it so i don't know.

Pros:

Prevents pregancy and cramps less painful

Cons:

Spotting, dizziness and nausea

Causes me 2 break out my thrid week, nausea(a lot in the white and light blue pills) and dizziness(the whole pack except for the green pills)....loss of appetitie(lost weight)...despite all these problems I think ortho lo does its job......

Pros:

not pregnant. predictable periods. 98% clearer skin. doesnt make you feel sick.

Cons:

still 7day period. lowered sex drive. fatigue

ive been on tri-cyclen Lo for 2yrs now, its great.my periods are normal. my body handled it much better then some of the other pills ive tried. Instead of cramping for a week before, I now cramp 2-3 days before now. not complaining. Great for beginners.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
