Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

No vomiting, works well, no nausea. Have not experienced any depression.

Cons:

I have taken Yasmin on and off and whenever I quit I experience intense abdominal pain for about a week and the last time I quit I broke out lightly with acne that when squeezed, white stuff came out that was pasty. It cleared up quickly tho.

It's worked well for me. I'm only mean and angry when someone hurts me, I've always been that way. First BC that didn't make me throw up the first day. Haven't experienced any bad side effects except abdominal pain and a mild breakout when i stopped, which was awkward for me since I use Clearasil Ultra products and haven't had bad acne in 3 years. I also have a small what appears to be a cyst next to my mouth that I think is causing the acne and wasn't there before. Other than that I've been content with Yasmin and don't really have many problems with it.

Pros:

Not pregnant

Cons:

anxiety, depression, sudden unexplainable anger, no sex drive!!!, no temper, spotting, nausea, vomiting, oilier skin, tiredness, dizzyness

I DO NOT recommend this pill! I was on Valette for two and a half year, which was completely agreeable with me, it cleared my skin, gave me energy, and even made my breasts grow a size, but had no side effects. Since I moved to the UK from Germany I had to switch since there is no equal to it here. Since I have been on Jasmine I have been depressed and don't really want to have sex. I am really snappy and generally unhappy for no apparent reason. Kissing my boyfriend is boring, which has never been the case since I love him so much, and it is really putting a strain on our relationship, which was previously unexplainable. My skin is slightly oilier, I am extremely tired, am really anxious, excessively thirsty and have extremely bad digestive problems. Don't take it!

Pros:

Not a dern thing. PLEASE, for your health and the safety of others, DON'T USE YASMIN!

Cons:

PREGNANCY followed by an AWFUL miscarriage, weight gain, hard to lose weight, irritability, non-stop crying, depression, no sex drive, and continual yeast infections. I turned into a fat witch.

I went on Yasmin 3 months before I got married and thought that Yasmin worked fine. I thought stress of planning a wedding and then newly being married, moving to a small town, and starting a career were the causes of my depression, non-stop crying and weight gain (even though my diet became more regulated and I was exercising more!). After a year of perfect pill use (every night at 10pm an alarm went off and I took my pill) and no weird antibiotics, I got pregnant. Didn't know it and miscarried at 8 weeks (found out at 7 that I was preggo). I didn't attribute anything to Yasmin until my gorgeous sister went on Yasmin and was having similar problems. She was told by her modeling agency she was going to have to start plus-size modeling and she broke up with her boyfriend of 3 years because she too had turned into a witch. She ditched Yasmin, lost weight and reconciled with her boyfriend. I just came off Yasmin. The weight melted off (with NO effort)and I am back to being myself.

Pros:

Love the fact that I know when my period will be. I tolerate the pill well and have been on it now for 2 years+.

Cons:

I gained weight, although I also gained bigger boobs...which is ok with me! I don't notice a big change in it helping with my acne.

Great birth control pill, easily tolerated with mild to no side effects. Possible to gain weight and doesn't seem to control acne the way promised.

Pros:

clear skin, weight control, light periods

Cons:

mood change

i am 32 and have lived an incredibly happy life - that is, until recently. i have been incredibly depressed since i started Yasmin. it's an emotion i am certainly not familiar with. however, i hestiate to stop taking it b/c of the other positive benefits i get from it. Additionally, along with starting up on Yasmin, some other things have been going on in my life such that i am not sure it's the pill. :(

Pros:

Not Pregnant

Cons:

Tiredness, no sex drive, mood swings, hopelessness and depression

Was prescribed Yasmin by my obgyn after I had my first baby 10 months ago. Had no baby blues after birth but in last few months have felt so down and alone with no energy and lots of mood swings. Was wondering could I have PND this late. Was with my GP yesterday and he asked which pill I was using, it was like a light bulb went off in his head, he said he's hearing more and more bad reports and took me off it straight away. Hopefully I should see an improvement soon fingers xd

Pros:

after a week, nausea stopped

Cons:

acne breakouts where i usually do not break out, a little bit of weight gain

i started ortho tri-cyclen to get rid of my acne, but after two weeks of using otc i have been getting pimples everyday! im not sure if it gets worse before it gets better, but my acne doesn't seem to be diminishing!

Pros:

(for the scales above i just put 1 for the first 2 cause i'm not on it yet!!!)
no babies!

Cons:

dunno yet...

i am ABOUT to take yasmine. and mow i'm really scared to after reading all of these. i hope it works for me. at least i won't get pregnant at 18 (EEK!), my boyfriend will appreciate that fact. although i don't know how he'd take me having severe acne or gaining a bajillion pounds. i know he'd still love me but i would NOT love myself. pleaaase someone write some words of encouragement and/or success with yasmine. i need to hear good news =/

Pros:

clears up acne, doesnt affect sex drive

Cons:

spotting

i took dianette for 4 years to clear up acne, but decreased my libido so came off it and 6 months later acne returned so was presrcibed yasmin. after a couple of months my acne had cleared up and because it is a lower dose pill my sex drive came back too. great pill but found i was spotting a lot which wasnt fun after sex! reckon may have been my fault as i didnt take the pills at the same time each day...will see what happens

Pros:

Know when you are due on period, not as painful, less moody and depressive and Free on Prescription.

Cons:

None that I know of... Maybe get more hungry nearer time of period.

I used to take Dianette for a year and it broke me out all the time and I was extremly depressed all the time and cried a lot! So, I switched to Yasmin and I felt much better... Says it all really lol

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
