Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

I used to be an emotional WRECK before my periods, crying the entire week. (I also have depression so this was just intensified during the one week). So Yaz helped TREMENDOUSLY with the emotions & NO cramps!

Cons:

I was put on Yaz to clear my acne, I've stuck with it for a year and it constantly fluctuates from decently clear to horrible breakout.

Give it a shot, I didnt experience any negative side effects, and it didnt necesariliy make me break out worse, it just didnt make my skin any clearer, consistently.

Pros:

Not worrying about getting pregnant.
MUCH less acne.
Less depression, less moody.

Cons:

Coming off of it made me an emotional wreck. It took me a month to get mood-steady.
ACNE!!!

I need to get back on this.

Pros:

None

Cons:

Emotionally Unbalanced, Severe Migraines, Blurred Vision,Spotting, Discharge, skin tags, acne

Please seriously research this pill before taking it. I wish I had. I orginially took Dianne 35 (Dianette) to control my acne after 10 years of being on it I started to develop migraines so decided to swith to "the rols royce of contraceptives" - Yasmin. Honestly, have NEVER experienced anything like it,I've been taking Yasmin for the past three months and in that period have had awful splitting migraines that seem to last throughout my cycle. I've also been an emotional wreck - crying for no reason, snapping at people, feeling very low in myself etc... Thanks to all those who posted their comments, your posts have helped me make the decision to stop taking this pill immediately.

Pros:

works well to regulate female system
no side effects
cool packaging

Cons:

doesn't have any effect on my acne

I gave this a 3 because it is wonderful as a birth control. I've tried Ortho Tri Cyclin, Ovcon, and Femcon. This is the best. I never get cramps or have spotting like I did before and my period is shorter and lighter than before. Also, no weight gain. On acne however, this product has not helped me at all. It hasn't made things worse or better. It seems to have no effect on acne at all. I would give it a 0 as an acne treatment. As birth control its great, but no birth control has ever helped my mild to moderate hormonal acne and I have been taking birth control on a continual basis for 8 years to regulate my cycle. Would highly recommend it as a birth control product but not at all as an acne treatment.

Pros:

Cleared up acne, lighter/shorter periods, less cramping, increased bust size

Cons:

Gaining weight, moody, decreased sex drive

I've been on the pill for about 9 months now. It has really helped clear up my acne when nothing had worked before, and believe me, I have tried it all. I still get a tiny break out around that time of the month but other than that my complexion looks a million times better. The downside, however, is I've gained about 10 lbs all in my stomach and thighs which isn't terribly noticeable to anybody except me, but nevertheless it annoys me. I also noticed I've been more moody but that could just be added stress of school. Bottom line: I would recommend this product, you need to give it about 4 months though until you really start to notice a difference. It's a long time to wait, but it's worth it.

Pros:

None as of yet as im not using it for birth control

Cons:

Extreme acne break out, nausea, depression, mood swings, crying at the smallest things

I would'nt try this yasmin again, although im going to stick to it for the packets we have in the cuboard cost a fortune! About $50.00 a month. I was on estelle for about 12 months and it was WONDERFUL! Ask your doctor if estelle would be ok for you then try it before yasmin. Its much cheaper to. A dollar a month.

Pros:

Free from babies, Improved acne

Cons:

Breast tenderness, fatigue, mood swings, frequent upset stomach

Have been using Yasmin for approx 5 weeks, seems to be improving my acne although I did suffer a breakout on one side of my face in the first couple of weeks of taking it, period a little less painful and lighter, no problem in remembering to take it

Pros:

I took Yaz birth control pills and Oh My Gosh! My skin is clear! This is only after taking it 10 days. My acne was moderate but still looked bad but, after taking yaz, I have soft, clear skin!!!!YEAH

Cons:

I seem to have low energy and be tired alot lately but so what, I have clear skin.

Yaz is prescribe for women to help with PMDD. I had severe PMS but I think my PMS was worst because my skin will have pus-filled pimples at that time of the month and I will have low self esteem. I can't believe how happy I am with clear skin, my makeup looks better, I feel better, LIFE is GREAT. Thanks Yaz

Pros:

Skin has cleared up almost completly, also has a very smooth and soft texture. It is an effective form of birth control. No periods!( I cycle the pills)

Cons:

A little bit of weight gain, and some moodiness and depression. The skin on my face feels a little bit dry sometimes and needs extra lotion. You have to remember to take them everyday.

I love it. It is amazing to finally be able to touch the skin on my face and it feels smooth. There were small bumps all over my face as well as larger ones here and there and they never went away no matter what I did. Since starting on Yaz my skin has gradually cleared up and I feel like a different person. It's great.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
