Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

effective birth control, no pms, better skin, less cramps, light/short periods

Cons:

took a while to get used to it

when i first started taking this pill, i had a few anxiety attacks caued by it. but now everything is fine---i started to break out again, i think mostly because of stress---in the beginning, it was more effective at treating my acne, but i've started to break out agian.

Pros:

None I can think of.

Cons:

Weight gain, increase in acne, bloating, moodswings.

I've weighed the same amount for most of my high school to adult life, and never have I gained so much or felt so bloated. I'm depressed and tired and my acne is getting SO much worse. I'm staying on for two months to see what happens.

Pros:

Skin looks glowing at times, fewer acne body looks in better shape

Cons:

The only problem I had was the second day I had taken them I had a terrible migraine and I felt so nauseous ugh. Besides that day I was fine.

its my first time taking a birth control pill. I started 3 days ago on Yasmin and so far so good. Thinking positive all the way for all the good results. As I see from other ladys reviews it didn't work so well on them and that's simply because not everybodys body is going to accept the hormones. Everybody's body is different so ladys you won't know unless you try. So people who recommend not to take the "pill" shouldn't be recommending that to anyone as everybody is different and will handle it differently .. Ignorence is BLISS! Good luck girlies!

Pros:

not pregnant, helped periods some, breasts grew, i havent ever had a problem with acne so it doesnt affect that

Cons:

weight gain! i always have stomach and head aches- but im not sure if it has to do with it or not.

im definitely not happy with the weight gain. it hasnt helped my moods at all. i get ill about a week before my period and am a total bitch for the next week. i cant find anything to help with this or any of the other things. i become very emotional around my period also and it doesnt help that either. id like to find something better but i do like this too.

Pros:

Prevents pregnancy!

Cons:

Made my acne worse (and I'm almost 29!) and I felt like my hormones were out of whack. My appetite was bigger too. This doesn't do half of what the ads say it does!!

Liked Yasmin better.

Pros:

Prevents Pregnancy, Regular Periods, Reduces Cramps

Cons:

My acne has gotten worse since I have used this product and at the beginning of taking the pill I got sick and threw up

This pill will not regulate your hormones to the point where it can get rid and regulate your acne. I have had no acne problem until I started to use this pill and I have acne all around my face.
November 5, 2008

Pros:

No babies, larger breasts, regular periods, cheap, no uncomfortable side effects, skin is clear

Cons:

CRAMPS!!!!

if I clean my skin regularly, I never or rarely break out it works rly well and I don't have any nausea or emotional problems i would have liked to have clearer skin... so I don't recommend it for people with severe/moderate acne
November 5, 2008

Pros:

It prevents pregnancy

Cons:

I am breaking out all over my shoulders neck and face. I am on the verge of vomiting. I have leg pain chest pain and headaches. I want to yell at everyone! Or sit in my room and cry. Screw this. Will i get sick if i just stop taking it?

That is the bottom line!

Pros:

It made my periods shorter and lighter thats about it,

Cons:

weight gain, bad headaches, food cravings, mood swings, sore breasts, nausea, just over all yucky!!

this pill is not worth it, if u want shorter lighter periods and can handle all those side effects then i would say go for it. Other wise this pill is useless,
October 27, 2008

Pros:

It definitely regulated my crazy period. It took away perimenstral cramps, and definitely made me less emotional. Turned my moderate acne into mild... still there though!

Cons:

Bled for the first month straight through. Hasn't completely taken my acne away. Caused extreme anxiety to the point of where it is affecting my job. Beat red face, blotchiness, you name it. Also causes bad panic attacks.

Give it a try. Different pills are hell for some people and wonderful for another. But I'd probably try another lower estrogen higher anti-androgen to clear up acne before you try Yaz. Don't get hooked on the TV ads just yet..

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
