Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Great at preventing pregnancy

Cons:

Terribly low libido (almost non-existent), mood swings, depression

Been on Yasmin off and on for the past 2 years. When the depression hit, I thought it was just the stress I was experiencing at work. My dr put me on stress medication and took me off the pill for a few months. Was great during those months, then started the pill again, and depression returned. After reading other reviews, I realised that it is the pill itself. I also thought that stress was the cause of my almost non-existent libido, but I left the job and the situation is still the same. I am currently lookin at other forms of birth control.

Pros:

Cleared up my skin quite well for the months I was on it

Cons:

Terrible mood swings and bouts of depression
Weight gain (only about 3 pounds, but still)
Increase in appetite

I found this to be good at helping clear up my acne... however I still had occasional bad breakouts and usually had at least one spot on my face most of the time. I have come off it now and am looking for other things for acne as I became extremely depressed most of the time whilst on this pill

Pros:

NO CRAMPS!!!!

Cons:

Weight gain and bloating

I've been taking OTC lo for about a year and a half. I've had acne the entire time without fail. I have times when it's worse than others but it's always there. I've also gained 40 pounds and am bloated consistently. On the plus side: I'm now able to move without pain during that time of the month.

This has really worked for my skin. I have been on tri-cyclen for around 2 years and it has made my skin much clearer. As well, my periods have become lighter. I have not experienced any major weight gain. I do have a sensitive stomach, however, and the pills at the beginning of the month upset my stomach occasionally. If you are on this or considering trying it, give it some time to work. It will take a few months to really notice improvement but for me, I rarely get any break outs, my skin isn't oily, and when I do get blemishes, they clear up quite quickly. I would definitely try this. It has worked for me and my skin is clear.

Pros:

havent really seen any improvement, and i have been taking it for 6 weeks now ...

Cons:

i think my acne has worsened

hi, im 17 my problem is kind of diff, since it's not just about the acne, i actually have polyistic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). My skin was flawless before i started my menstrual cycle (13 years old),and even a year after that my skin seemed fine and then all of a sudden i started getting acne, very moderate though, i would only get like 1 or 2 sometimes even 3 pimples, but just last year i started having acne a bit more then i did before, and it seemed like it was leaving scars, i also started getting facial hair ( as in the hair on my face and body grew). I was going crazy becouase i didnt know why all this was happening. So i went to the doc and according to my results she said i had PCOS, and that my hormones were just imbalanced, so now im on OCT Reg. and i hope evrything works out, i really dont care about the acne much, but the excess hair needs to go, n even worse my periods need to get regular again, cuz i really dont want any pregnancy prob's in the future!

My acne went from being mild to severe within the first month of taking OTC Lo. Very frustrating.

Minor acne, Minor mood swings

This pill has been wonderful. In the begining there was some minor acne but that all cleared up (after two months) I am a little more emotional but im an emotional kind of person so what can i say...

Pros:

No babies, regular periods

Cons:

Horrible headaches, Depression, Mood swings, and leg cramps

When I started Yasmin I had the common side effects of nausea and not really any bad pms no weight gain or anything. after about 6 months I got really depressed my relationships were horrible because I didn't want to be around anyone. I had horrible mood swings and would go off on my boyfriend for no reason and anyone else that was in my path! I would also get anxiety attacks I dont recommend this pill I have switched to mircette! so hopefully that one works a lot better!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
