Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Bigger boobs, starting to clear skin, lighter periods, no cramps, and not pregnant!

Cons:

a little weight gain, very hungry some days, some mood swings, emotional at times

I been on this pill for about 3 months. The first couple of months i had sore boobs..but then i noticed they were growing! i guess thats why they were sore. I had mood swings but thats tooo much... i would get emotional at times over little things. I have acne, but haven't seen much change in that yet..i think it starting to clear up a little now.

Pros:

at first I noticed less bloating and I knew when my periods were coming.

Cons:

I started taking it for acne and it made it a great deal worse. Horrible cramps and heavier periods.

I will never take it again.

Pros:

not pregnant!! light mood swings, lighter periods, hardly any cramps during my cycle, beautiful complexion!!

Cons:

EXPENSIVE!!! decreased sex drive:(

I have been on Yasmin for 5 years. My periods are much easier to deal with. I used to be curled over in pain from my cramps, and now I hardly get any. The mood swings lasted a month or so, when I first started Yasmin. After that I was fine, actually better than normal!! Less stress and less anxiety compared to Ortho-trycycline. I do agree with the decreased sex drive. I am 25 yrs old and if it wasn't for my fiance, I would probably never think about sex. It just isn't there. I NEVER thought it could be my pill!! It makes sense now!! I might try to switch and see if it changes. Other than that (which is a big deal!) I love the pill:)

Pros:

....

Cons:

horrible periods, cramps, and acne at the end

Everyone I know on this pill now has a child. The only reason I don't is because I didn't use it as birth control. It did control acne a little but after a while the acne was unbelievable.

Pros:

Lighter periods, protects against pregnancy, cheap if you have a drug plan

Cons:

Unpredictable period dates, didnt help clear up acne

I never know when I'll be getting my period...could be a day after my last pill or 5 days..which causes a cramp in my style as well as a concern towards pregnancy

Pros:

Clears up acne, regular & lighter periods, no condoms & prevents pregnancy.

Cons:

Remembering to take it everyday on time (use your cell phone's daily alarm to help remind you).

At first I was hesitant to try OTC because I heard of its negative side effects (weight gain/bloating, mood swing & possible blood clots) & how it may not clear up acne. But I was getting tired of taking vitamin A supplements which didn't necessarily clear my acne (especially the painful pimples) & in the long run its bad for your liver. So I finally tried OTC & I love it! I've been taking it for about 6 months & my acne is gone! I usually get pimples when I'm stressed or if I don't get enough sleep & so far I've been stressed & sleep deprived & I'm still acne free! I occasionally get tiny pimples, but those go away on its own within two days. I don't even use those acne creams anymore, but I still use an acne face soap. The painful pimples that leave a scar - I haven't had one ever since I've been on OTC. Had I known this worked so well I should have tried this years ago. I surprisingly don't have any of those negative side effects either.

Pros:

no more break outs, no pregancy, and no cramping.

Cons:

felt sick for a while and hard 2 remember to take all the time

it works well for me, and no mood swings before my period.

Pros:

Worked GREAT for my acne. After a few weeks people commented on how great my skin looked!

Cons:

I felt very sick to my stomach in the mornings because of this pill. After about 5 months of clear skin, it seemed as if my acne was starting to come back

I really loved how quickly it cleared up my acne, but it does make you a little sick in the mornings and your acne may come back a few months down the road. I tried ortho tricyclin lo first and it was HORRIBLE!! It made my acne MUCH worse. Yasmine was WONDERFUL for me!

Pros:

the only pro i found it to have was that i didn't get pregnant on it.

Cons:

It gave me bouts of anxiety, crankiness, depression, little to no sex drive, sore breasts, cramping, and spotting.

i know birth control has different results with different people, but this pill was absolutely terrible for me. i had practically every side effect possible and was miserable most of the time i was taking it.

Pros:

None of the side effects of Dianette
Lighter period
nooooooooooooooo bloody spots

Cons:

The sticker covering the pills was off centre and I had to work twice as hard at getting them out!

It works. Simple. And it's free in the UK :)

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
