Acne.org’s Real World Take
Any brand of oral contraceptive appears to clear the skin about the same amount, regardless of whether it is officially approved for acne treatment. Some people report complete clearing of acne symptoms and others see partial relief. However, artificially controlling your hormones is a serious decision, so it’s best to proceed with caution.

Pros:

Gave me perfect glowing skin, didn't get pregnant, had regular periods

Cons:

Almost completely removed my sex life, affected my personality, lost my competitiveness, lost my passion and creativity

Many women don't know that birth control can affect their sex drive. Women on birth control tend to report lower libidos than those not using birth control. The effect on me was extreme. While on yaz, I hated having sex, it was a chore to me. Within two months of being off yaz, I was an animal. My sex drive is easily a 10 and my husband can't keep up with me! We enjoy an amazing sex life because I'm not on the pill anymore. Also, I have my personality and passion back. I will never go back. If you don't mind becoming a humdrum, middle of the road personality type that doesn't want to have sex in order to get clear skin, take it. If you don't want your personality to change, find another acne solution.

Pros:

No more acne, controlled period, pregnancy prevention

Cons:

Stronger cramps before my period, vaginal dryness <- really sucks!,

Naturally it took my body a couple of months to completely adjust to the pills. With that my face cleared up, my period lasted 3-4 days. But I also got more painful cramps and I got so emotional about a week before my period. But the worst thing of all is the vaginal dryness, it got so bad i couldn't even have sex. And I'm 23 so that shouldn't be happening to me! So I stopped taking it, it's been 2 weeks now and my face is starting to break out again and I'm not dry anymore down there.

Pros:

lighter period, no cramps

Cons:

increased appetite, strange pain in legs, diminished sex drive

the fact is, that all combination pills kill the sex drive. the reason being, that they stop the production of androids (malehormones in woman) that cause the sexdrive. This is why acne clears out as well. Even the official pages say, that Yasmin works byt "tricking" the body thinking it is already pregnant. What does a pregnant lady do? Eat, and again eat. I am worried about the leg cramps, probably will endure the pms and period pain so I can feel healthy and normal again. So wont continue.

Pros:

Prevents pregnancy

Cons:

Serious cramps and blood clots... 2 periods during the first month

I had previously been on yasmin about a year ago, but I was so careless I just didn't take them all the time. I just got back on them after I had my daughter and they are already giving me problems I am on my period for the second time this month. And I have huge blood clots and it is very painful. Everyone is different... read about the health risks on both yasmin and yaz, they are very shocking! If u are having serious side effects u can possibly get compensation!

Pros:

Helped control acne, lighter periods, feel great on it

Cons:

If i forget a pill my skin looks worse the next day..other than that its great.

I have had severe acne for over 3 years and nothing worked that my dermatologist perscribed. I needed to go on BC so she told me to try this. My skin dramatically cleared! I have like one or two zits when I get my period but other than that my skin is very smooth. The lighter periods are a plus too!

Pros:

It definitely prevents pregnancy well and i trust it in that sense. I had shorter periods within a few months of taking it.

Cons:

I gained a max of like 4 pounds. which makes me uneasy, but i have accepted this fact.

I love how the pill has been both effective and affordable. it works for sure.

Pros:

less oily skin/acne

Cons:

Chest pains!, muscle spasms, headaches, have to pee alot (yasmin has a diruetic in it which makes you lose water), I think i got ever side effect other in the book and I on it for only 1 month!!

Hate this pill! I've been on BC in the past and never had so many side effects. Ended up in the ER 3 nights ago because of the chest pains. All tests were normal, but I'm still feeling it. NOT WORTH IT!!! Some people have no problems, but if you do a internet search on yasmin you'll find alot of negative comments... more than any other pill. I wish I had done my research before choosing this pill.

Pros:

No pregnancy / Cleared up all acne / Full Breasts / Nice thick hair / Period always came on the same day / No cramps (ever)

Cons:

Hormones destroyed my gallbladder

I loved everything about being on birth control (OTC Regular) except the fact that after taking it for 6 years it made me very sick. I've been told by my GI that since gallbladder problems ran in my family (maternal side) taking the extra hormones ultimately lead to my gallbladder functioning at 10% its capacity. Because of the hell I went through I had to get it removed. I'd recommend doing some tests and talking to OB's about the various possible problems that may arise from taking higher dosed birth control pills.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
