it probably saved my life
I really wish I had taken this sooner. I don't get why people write bad reviews about Isotretinoin. It is indeed a cure for acne, but you have to take it with responsibility, listen to your body, get blood tests, consult your dermatologist and so on.

Please listen to me
I have just finished my 5 months of Accutane and feel I owe it to acne sufferers everywhere and Acne.org to say that please, just give Accutane a go. I have never been more confident in myself as Accutane has drastically cleared up my skin to the point it is absolutely unnoticeable i even had acne. I am back to being me again, and i know you can feel the same. The worst that could happen would be that you don't like the side effects enough to stop taking the medication. For me it's a life changing medication with only positive results. Please don't listen to people talking badly of the drug as if your acne has you feeling low, it is a miracle cure. And remember no one looks at you the way you do. People see the bigger picture - not just your skin. Sure they will notice you have acne, but anyone who has not suffered themselves would not see it as disgusting, they will see a bit of redness. And the people who have suffered will only sympathize with your situation. And i mean this in the nicest possible way but no one cares about your apperance - they care about theirs much like you only care about your own. So smile, live through it, and trust me. Try accutane. All the best, Ben

hello! I'm a 20-year-old male and I'm on my second week of taking Isonoin/accutane. I'm not seeing yet any improvement on my skin, just want to know if, how long will it take to see improvements. Thanks!
July 13, 2016
You will only see major improvement a month or so after the trial has ended. My dermatologist used to say this every visit and it did indeed come true, I'm afraid there's no instant cure

Worked For Me!
There is a higher ratio of people leaving negative reviews on accutane than positive reviews because many people who reaped the benefits don't come back to write " it worked for me" , but here I am to say " IT WORKED". My dermatologist had been encouraging me to take accutane for years now but I was scared from reading all the negative reviews ,so I resorted to natural methods ( which did not work to the magnitude I desired). After finally giving up, I gave it a shot and luckily for me I experienced the common side-effects which go away after discontinuing the drug. I was 19 years old when I took the drug, female, 5'4, weighed around 120 ( for the people who care about stats). Did not take birth control because I didn't want any extra drugs circulating my system especially when accutane is a strong drug on its own. Avoiding pregnancy was not an issue for me so my doctor was lenient about this. I took Accutane - 30 mg for the first two month. Epuris- 40 mg for the other 4 months. I started in May 2015 and ended in November 2015. The type of acne I had was related to unbalanced hormones, stress, poor diet- all factors which I had a hard time fixing due to being a full time university student. Stress and poor diet was unavoidable in my case no matter how hard I tried. Problematic areas for me were my cheeks and sometimes forehead, it was not flaming red acne all over my face. I was still able to cover it up with makeup but vanity was not my reason to take it. It was very painful, I would get cysts on my cheeks and back ( had been suffering from bacne for 6 years now). During the first month, I felt the common side effects of dry lips, dry skin, aching back. The most problematic side effect for me was the back aches and the knees cracking so I asked my doctor to switch me to another brand Epuris which alleviated some of the back pain. For the remainder of the treatment, the dryness was my pressing issue. No matter how much lip balm I used , they always felt chapped and dry. My skin was very dry so I constantly moisturized with Ponds. I also had a very dry scalp causing me to have dandruff but that quickly went away when I started using mustard oil before shampooing almost 3 times a week. The mustard oil REALLY HELPED keep the scalp dryness at bay. Most days I wouldnt have aches but few days I would experience bach aches. I was also very keen on applying sunscreen twice a day, your skin becomes very sensitive. In terms of grooming, I stopped waxing my face, eyebrows, stopped laser and electrolysis treatments for a year total. Threading was the best way to go. If you opt for this, please let your person know so they can be slow and careful with your skin. My acne started disappearing right away when I started taking away with a flare up during the 4 month. It wasn't a severe flare up , a few pimple on the lower right side of my cheek but at that point it felt like alot because I had gotten used to my new skin. The flare up cleared in a week and a half. Ever since I have been clear and only get a few small pimples here and there, those are usually related to poor skin care, like leaving my makeup on overnight. After discontinuing the treatment, my dryness subsided in about 2 months. 2 months post-accutane my lips were back to normal. My skin and scalp were not too dry but wasn't oily either, I'd like to say normal. The back aches still occurred after stopping the treatments but completely stopped after about 6 months. I am clear and pain-free now. For me it worked really well with side effects that were tolerable and went away after stopping the treatment. I would do it again if I had to ( hopefully I don't have to). If you are able to stick through the side effects, then it will be worth it. At the same time, I want everyone to understand your body chemistry will be different than mine so the severity and types of side effects may be different. I had a positive experience which is why I wanted to share mine with you accutane hopefuls out there. Good luck !

Fantastic drug. Went on it in my early twenties twice and it gave me perfect skin for 20 years
I went on Accutane/Roaccutane twice in my early 20's. It is an amazing drug and the only cure for acne. The only side effect I had was dry lips and I just bought Elizabeth Arden's eight hour cream and that solved the problem. Do not be put off taking this wonderful drug by a few scaremongers on the internet. It gave me perfect incredible skin for 20 years. I am now 45 and some very mild acne has started to emerge and I am going on doxycycline. Accutane also has an anti ageing effect on the skin as I look about 10 years younger than my age and I put it down to having been on Roaccutane/Accutane. I told a work colleague about it who had severe acne. She went on it and now also has perfect skin and she had severe acne. So I helped change her life. Go on Roaccutane/ Accutane you will not regret it.

Hi, I'm delighted to hear your treatment worked for you! I was given this treatment in my late teens after seeing a dermatologist and it too cleared my skin....amazing. I am now almost 30 and I am struggling with bad acne again. However, I am no longer under the care of a dermatologist. Do you know if your GP can prescribe it or would I have to go down the path of the dermatologist again?
August 5, 2015
liveforlife, your GP can prescribe it (at least in Canada) but may be uncomfortable with that and send you to a dermatologist anyway.

Very happy so far!
So I was very hesitant on going on this drug - being 21 and having moderate acne (since I was around 16) really lowered my self confidence. Having tried each and every drug prescribed to me by my GP, I finally got referred to a dermatologist. I got prescribed by my dermatologist 30mg for the first month and then 60mg for the next 5 months which I am very happy about. I am only on my second month and I can honestly say I have already seen such a HUGE difference to my skin. Yes my skin (particularly nose) and lips are VERY dry but other than that I have had absolutely no issues. I never thought I would see results so soon, everybody was going on about the period your skin will get worse before it gets better but fortunately I haven't had that. I haven't broken out in the last three weeks at all (been on it now for about 6 weeks). I will get back to you guys in the next couple of months but so far very very happy. Not having a spot FEELS SO GREAT!!!!

An Honest Review of Accutane

Pros:

Closest thing to a cure for acne
It actually works, unlike hit-and-miss face washes
Long-lasting clear skin

Cons:

You'll die without Chapstick. Never be without it for more than five minutes.
It gets worse before it gets better, but it DOES get better.
Other side effects—muscle pain, any random pain you have, you can blame on accutane

Here's the deal. My experience on accutane was rough, but it was SO worth it. I'll tell you straight up how it was and what to expect. I started getting bad acne when I was 14, all over my neck, back, chest and face. The worst part was the big inflamed zits that would pump out pus like factories and wouldn't leave for weeks, sometimes months. And even when they did leave they left scars in their place. It was maddening. Acne had destroyed my self-esteem and confidence. I finally went to my dermatologist and asked what we could do. He suggested antibiotics, but my mom and I pushed for accutane. Skip the weak stuff and go for the hardcore acne drug. It's the closest thing to a CURE for acne, and its effect is almost permanent. Here's something you'll want to keep in mind: the higher the dose you're on, the less likely your acne is to relapse. Thankfully I had an aggressive-treatment dermatologist who knew this. I was on the pills for 6 months'"the last three months I was taking 120mg a day. If you don't have any experience with accutane doses, that's a mother-freaking high dose. The point is my acne never came back. I have occasional mini-breakouts now and then, but they're here and gone within a week. Now for the side effects. The best part of accutane is that it gets the job done, and you probably won't have to deal with stuff like proactive once it's over (which takes FOREVER to put on and rinse off.) All you have to do with accutane is pop a pill. Because I was on such a high dose I had some intense side effects: chapped lips (use Chapstick), dry eyes (use eye drops), random red patches on my skin (use lotion), muscle pain and a greater tendency to pull muscles (can't do anything about that, just wait until your time is up), bad breakouts for the first two months, etc. It got worse before it got better for me, as it does with lots of people. But it DID get better by the end of my treatment. And it stayed that way. Overall, accutane IS DEFINITELY WORTH IT. it saved my confidence, saved my life. Just be willing to go through hell for several months to get your prize of clear skin.

Horrific drug.

Pros:

Temporarily clear face

Cons:

Hairloss
Wrecked skin
Premature aging

I was prescribed claravis for very mild acne and it essentially wrecked my life. Thinned out my skin, I have wrinkles 3 years later at 20. Thinned hair, rosacea, pale skin, rectal bleeding, still dry years later . I was a normal person before accutane. Now my life will never be the same. I honestly can not emphasize how life altering (for the absolute worst) this drug was. It is possibly the most sad thing in the world to thing how different my life would have been had i just not gone to a dermatologist. Derms should be the absolute lowest paid doctors. Unless theyre performing surgery they are ignorant, ignorant people with little skill. IF YOU are reading this, just think for 2 seconds. Look at all the one stars you see. You dont see that with anything else. When you go to buy a tv if there were 30% 1 stars you would quickly look to another tv where there were only maybe 2 or 3. Just look at all the severe side effects that you could endure. Avoid it. Dont take this drug.

Pros:

-No oil. None. For a grease ball like myself, it was amazing to have clean hair for days. I got to feel normal for a change! The oil returned immediately after treatment, though. ;)

-Acne eventually cleared. It took a LONG time for me, though.

-Nearly a year after stopping treatment, I haven't had a single spot.

-NO MORE MAKE-UP!

-The biggest Pro? I no longer get monster cysts. I no longer feel like a freak, embarrassed to look other people in the eye. It's the best feelin

Cons:

-Dry, red eyes*
-Some abdominal pain (left side, but all blood tests were normal)*
-Always tired! My energy level dramatically increased after stopping treatment.
-Monthly dermatologist visits and blood tests. A nuisance, but worth it.

*side effects subsided after stopping treatment

I SINCERELY regret not taking this drug earlier. The noticeable scarring I have from a decade long struggle could have been prevented, but I let the horror stories scare me away from the drug for so long.

I dealt with varying degrees of acne for over a decade. I spent $$ on pills, creams, vitamins, etc. Accutane scared me, so I kept turning it down. At 26, my cysts were bigger than they'd ever been. I decided on a low dose treatment: 20mg (1 mo), 30 (1 m), 40 (10 m). I didn't get clear until month 11 or 12. But I DID get clear and remain clear nearly a year after stopping treatment. I no longer cringe when I look in the mirror. I no longer avoid the mirror. I love my skin.

Pros:

Super clear skin
Amazing radiance
No more shine
Self confidence
Didn't need to wear makeup
Acne free for 10+ years
People complimented my skin all the time
No initial break out

Cons:

Dry skin
Chapped lips
SUPER dry eyes
Couldn't wax (I did but twice a little skin came off)
Minimal hair loss (it comes back)
Minimal alcohol consumption
More sensitive to the sun

All the cons are manageable if you want good skin
THAT bad. Most people don't understand what it's like to have bad skin. Clear skin was worth all the symptoms for me.

Accutane seriously changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone that is suffering from bad skin. I went on it in 2002 and have been acne free until now. I started breaking out in August and nothing seems to work- Proactive, Epiduo- well they work, but as soon as I stop, the acne persists. This drug is literally the only thing that works. It makes your skin so perfect. If you suffer because of acne (stay home, embarrassed, it depresses you), you should try this.

Pros:

Pretty girl swag
aka
amazing skin

Cons:

Eczema
Dry nostrils, skin and lips
Sore heels

I've read some crazy reviews and was iffy about all the side effects buuuut I tried it and literally there was a noticeable difference in my skin within the first month with no horrible initial breakout. When I first started I was still using topical benzol peroxide for the first week or so before my skin got too dry, then I switched to just washing. Then it got to where I only wash my face at night cause my super oily skin stopped producing all that ish. I'm loving how my skin looks and feels! ooh but I have had some side effects too- first came the dry lips. Then my scalp started getting a little flaky but I stopped washing my hair everyday and that fixed it right away. Add that I've been getting the occasional eczema rash on my hands/arms. I also noticed my heels started getting sore a little, not a crazy amount or all the time but it's noticeable. Finally and most annoyingly, the insides of my nostrils have all dried out- que asco mocos but I'll be real it's like my mucus dried up in little pieces. My derm recommended using a q-tip with aquaphor inside and that helps. Looking at that paragraph of drawbacks it sounds like a lot but it's actually not hard at all to live normally while taking accutane. The symptoms are not severe for me, I still drink socially with my friends, and if I ever feel like my symptoms are getting too bad I just skip a day or two of taking the pills (it doesn't make me break out and it helps). I'm on my 3rd month, with no breakouts, just the occasional little bump. for comparison i've been on 60mg per day the whole time. ~buena suerte a todos~

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
