The nuclear option. It works reliably and provides long-term remission of acne, and even severe acne, in about ⅔ of people who properly take an adequate dosage. Pros:

Clears skin very well

Cons:

Dryness of lips, skin, nose. Cuts take longer to heal

Accutane is the only thing that seems to be working for me, so I figured I would write a review about it. Accutane gets too badly represented by the internet. If antibiotics don't work for you then take accutane. My skin dried out horribly and my lips are getting worse still, but my skin is getting clearer as this happens. I am doing judo as I take accutane and my performance isn't affected by the drug. I do take glucosamine for my joints. I still have 2 more months to go and I encourage all of you guys to try accutane through a dermatologist. Stay up!

Pros:

- reduced oilyness of skin and hair
- quick clearing of pimples
- clear skin!!

Cons:

- really bad eczema on hands and arms
- moody for the first 2 months
- hair loss!!
- really high cholesterol (beware if you are predisposed as I am)
- muscle aches
- repeated conjunctivitis due to dry eyes
- extremely dry lips

I was very keen to start accutane since I have tried many topical and oral treatments. I had started Dianette for 3 months but stopped it once I started accutane. Because of this I never had the initial breakout that many people experience as it had already happened when I started Dianette. I started seeing results immediately with a reduction in oilyness and drying of my existing pimples. I was told I was only to be on 40mg for 5-6 months and by month 4 I was experiencing 1 pimple/3 weeks. I stopped accutane at 5.5 months since I couldn't handle the hairloss, which I was told should be temporary. My cholesterol also shot up to 6.5 (should be <3). My skin is now pimple-free but is really really red all the time. This should go down within 6months. Now looking at my skin it seems like such a problem that its red but I would pick red skin over acne any day and the redness should go down.

Pros:

Completely cleared up my acne within the 16 weeks I was on it

Cons:

Inconvienent side affects

My skin before: moderate acne, lots of annoying pimples, acne scars, blackheads, very very very oily skin. - Within 2 weeks of being on Roaccutane, my normally digustingly oily skin had been dryer, but not too dry. My skin stayed matte throughout the whole day, and I woke up in the morning with matte skin, unlike before when my skin would be constantly greasy. - At first, as the Doctor said, my acne did get worse. I got a few big spots, but they would clear in just a couple of days. My doctor said this is what normally happens when you first start on it. - Inconvienent side effects: constantly chapped lips (had to constantly put lip balm on, which became quite annoying), sometimes skin would go dry in patches (had to moistrise more than usual when this happened, which I wasn't used to as I normally avoided moistrising because of my normally greasy skin), ezcsma on my arms and legs (which i've never had before, but creams cleared this up, and it disappeared as soon as I came off Roaccutane) and dry inside of nose (happened after about 2 months, my nose became really dry and a little bloody, which was annoying, but not as serious at the nose bleeds I was told I would have by my doctor). - I also had a really random side effect, which was my nails becoming really weak and brittle for about a week, and also sore for a couple of days. But I had no other problems with my nails after that. However, the positives: - My acne is COMPLETELY GONE. - It dried up my oily skin, and my skin has also stayed non-oily when I came off roaccutane, but not as dry as it was when I was on it. - My hair used to go really greasy quickly, and Roaccutane stopped this from happening, and my greasy hair has not returned since I come off it. I am 17 and since I was 11 have suffered really bad with acne. THIS HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! I would recommend it to anyone. The side effects can be annoying, but the end result is so worth it, its worth having chapped li

Pros:

clear skin, loss of painful cystic acne, confidence

Cons:

dry skin, flaking around mouth, headaches, loss of energy

Despite the dry lips and flaking around the mouth, If you want clear skin you have to suck it up. I don't regret taking accutane at all and really recommend it for those of you out there that are sick and tired of eating healthy foods, taking immaculate care of your skin, and exercising for your skin, and not getting any results in return. It changed my life.

Pros:

Amazing results of clear skin and shine free complexion. It is the skin you have always hoped for.

Cons:

- Expensive co-pays for me including monthly derm visits, bloodwork and medicine. My co-pay cost for the entire treatment was $1050.
- iPledge is a pain and my derm office didn't fully understand it. I had to educate myself on the system (timing of bloodwork) and eventually switch doctors to find one that understood it.
- Dry lips but who cares if your acne clears up??
- Scary risks with being female and childbearing age.
- I had to take two courses 15 years apart. It doesn't last

Amazing drug!! If acne makes you feel bad about yourself you need to do this. It is a huge committment but completely worth it for a 6 month period of time. My co-pays were high but I figure that I've wasted much more than $1000 in over the counter acne crap. I highly recommend Accutane.

Pros:

still waiting

Cons:

very expensive and still waiting

im on my 6th week on accutane and my skin has never looked as bad. ive started to get spots in places where i would never get them before i went on this. i asked my derm about this and apperantly you gotta wait 3 months to see improvement and the reason my skin is getting so worse is that the acctune is causing all the bacteria to draw out of my body. my acne has never been worse as it is now! a lot of people including me will think that this gets to work straight away but this is far from true. with some people it does but with others you have to let it get worse before better which can be very frustarating. like i said 6th week skin has never looked worse and im still waiting

Pros:

It cleared my acne from being on it for 3 months. I was on it for a total of 5 months.

Cons:

Well its been a year since I last finished taking accutane. And my acne is coming back again. So I'm re-living this nightmare all over again. ONLY SIDE EFFECTS IS DRY LIPS

Accutane works, but in my case it only worked for a year. I now have acne again. And I don't have insurance, so to get back on acctuane is going to cost thousands of dollars.... But this medicine really does clear your face, the question is for how long?

Wish I had taken this sooner!
I took accutane 8 years ago when I was in High School. I wish I had taken this drug sooner, instead of wasting all the time/money that I did trying other stuff that didn't work. All that waiting did was leave me with more scars. Accutane for me was a dream. I had basically no side effects aside from a small rash that developed on my arms from dryness; but the doc recommended a drug store lotion that took care of that real quick. Honestly, I think people who are taking the medication need to let it run it's course and stop scrolling through internet forums every step of the way. I mean it! I don't even know if this site existed back then but I certainly never knew about it or even went on the internet to search for accutane once. I was so busy, I just took it daily and went on about my day, and I think that's why my experience was so great. If your constantly googling the medicine and overthinking every possible side effect, it's just going to stress you out and make you think you have side effects that you probably don't even have haha. So, 8 years later I am now experiencing a very mild hormonal breakout that I am currently treating. However, let me stress the word MILD as compared to how my acne was in high school. It literally does not compare at all. This breakout does not make me think twice about my decision to take accutane. I was able to go through my second half of high school and all of college without having to worry about my skin at all. I had perfect skin and rarely got breakouts no matter what I ate, how much sleep I got or what I did to my face. No regrets at all.

13+ years of Acne, 7 months of Accutane.
I had a great experience with Accutane, or Clarus which is what I actually took. For the first three or four months I took 40mg once a day, and then the rest I alternated with taking one 40mg pill and two 40mg pill [to average at 60mg/day] Initially I had some drying, but nothing bad. After the second month my skin became quite red- it didn't hurt at all though. My lips were the dryest part, but I found the lip treatment I was using made it barely noticable. By month 7 my skin was flaking a bit more than it had been during the previous months, but a few days after my last dose it went away. My skin never went through the 'worse and than better' phase, it just got better. I still had a few pimples for the first 5 months, but nothing compared to what it was before. And then the last two months it all just went away. While I believe I was a good candidate for Accutane [had moderate acne for 13+ years, birth control, diet, antibiotics, etc never helped] I do think the reason my skin didn't react as dramatically as some was because of my skincare. I live in Toronto, so I was using some products that are local but can be purchased online/equivilents can be found. As a cleanser, I used Mario Badescu: Enzyme Cleanser. Honestly I didn't care much for this stuff, but I had purchased it so I figured I would use it. I never found cleanser affected my skin much. To remove makeup though I always use coconut oil. For a moisturizer, I used Pure + Simple: Regenerating Seabuckthorn Berry Oil. This stuff is a dream come true and I think it's the main reason my skin was so good during my treatment. You can buy other brands, as long as not just oil + fillers. Seabuckthorn Oil is great for wound healing so it's perfect for Accutane users. It's pricey but one bottle lasted me 8+ months, so in the end it's worth it. In general, I cannot reccomend oils for your face enough. I know it seems scary since most people who deal with acne also have oily skin, but I've been using oils on my skin since before I started Accutane and while it didn't clear up my skin, it made it feel great! And is way more healing than regular moisturizers that are mainly just fillers. For my lips, I used Elizabeth Arden: 8 Hour Cream. This stuff is so great. It's mega thick, you can add it to your moisturizer, apply it to burns/cuts, or do what I did and apply it straight to your lips. I found I had to apply it often when I first started my treatment but by the end it was much less often and my lips felt/looked great. I've been done treatment for a month now, and my skin looks and feels great. It's very smooth to the touch, and while I still have some scaring, I have no pimples and haven't for months. I did not experience any of the other side effects, besides dry skin/lips.

Best thing I've ever done!
Accutane was my miracle acne cure. I had suffered from horrible breakouts and oily skin since the 7th grade. My terrible skin became quite depressing and really made my high school days tougher than they should have been. Finally around 20 years old and after using every other product known to man, my dermatologist put me on Accutane. The process is kind of a pain, but after seeing results, I didn't mind at all. A lot of people say you break out first but I didn't. About 2-3 months in, my skin was clear- no face makeup needed. For once in my life, I had beautiful, radiant and clear skin. It was so unbelievable. I'm 24 now and still think Accutane was the best thing I ever did. The oil production in my skin has returned a little but no serious breakouts. I often imagine how much smoother life would have been if I had taken Accutane much younger. Sighs.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
