Acne.org’s Real World Take
The nuclear option. It works reliably and provides long-term remission of acne, and even severe acne, in about ⅔ of people who properly take an adequate dosage. However, it permanently and irreversibly changes the skin and the body forever and users may experience long-term side effects for the rest of their lives. It’ll nuke it, but there is no going back.

Pros:

It really works...Just be patient. I used low dose (20mg), for 4 monthes, and I got rid of acnes and greasy hair and skin for good. It˙s been a year since I ´ve stoped, and nothing came back. Woohoo... :)))) Keep the good faith and belive!

Cons:

dry lips, need to have chapstick all the time, dry face, not intensive, but still present mood-swings and that is it! ;)

Just belive, be strong and don ´t pick your bumps! I have a few scars because I was no good ;) Wish u all the best, be strong and get rid of those acnes for good! Kisses from Serbia Ana

Just wanted to state that my last review should have been five stars (or whatever those little people are meant to be!), not zero! That's the trouble with doing this on your phone, rather than a computer!

Pros:

- Clears up skin while on drug/ short time after
- Nice skin glow during treatment
-Got rid of cystic acne
-Boosts self esteem

Cons:

- Dry lips
-Sensitive skin
-increased redness
-possible long term consequences
-NOT a cure
-Acne comes back

I went on accutane (amnesteem) after my acne of 4 years developed into awful cystic acne. no other topical or oral medication seemed to work. I started my course last January and ended it last July (total of 6 months). During the treatment, it took time for my skin to clear up and red marks to heal, but my cystic acne cleared and my skin was no longer oily. However, my red marks were bad and still remained. A couple months after the end of the treatment, my skin started to increase in oily-ness, and I started to break out again. No cystic acne, but leading up to now, my acne has gotten pretty bad again, and my skin is MORE oily than before. My skin has also increased in redness due to new acne, and I'm considering a second course, as no topicals or meds are working (shocker). Understand that everyones skin is different, however, people should not be posting reviews to this drug a week or month after/during the treatment. You need to wait a couple months to see long term results, or whether your acne comes back. Because mine came back pretty badly.

Pros:

Skin is completely clear.
No eruptions in the morning or during the day
No whiteheads or nodules.
Skin doesn't hurt (acne spots are very painful)
Doesn't take long getting ready (used to have to pop spots, wait for the redness to go, or blood)
GOT MY LIFE BACK.

Cons:

Lips get so chapped.
Dry skin on face and arms.
Got several mini rashes on my arms.
Not able to drink.
More pain after exercising.

Bottom line if you have severe acne get on this drug now. For you Americans, the national health system is extremely poor and I was only prescribed this after going private (which is a very good service). I've been on it for three months now and it has completely cleared up all my acne. All that remains is a few blemishes and slight redness however since I'm only actually half way through my treatment, I expect this too reduce even further. The benefits much outweigh the drawbacks. It will change your life and your confidence will severely increase. Still got three months left on the drug but I'm only on 30mg. However kept a diary and monthly photos of how my acne is progressing and feel free to email me too get these, you'll really see the improvement, jase_2394@[link removed]. It will change your life.

Pros:

Clear Skin
No Greasy/Oily Hair/Skin anymore
Huge Improvement and Compliments on my face

Cons:

Dry Lips
Dry Face

Ive been on Accutane 4 or 5 Months and my chest/back has cleared up 99%. My face I have maybe 1 active pimple and I get pimples very rarely. My face looks so much better than it used to 4-5 months ago. Another month or two and my face will look amazing. I Highly recommend accutane Ive tried thousands of products and pills and spent so much money and this is the only thing that has worked for me. If anyone out there is considering taking accutane or is currently taking accutane I use Aquaphor for my lips/body/hands and cetaphil antibacterial bar soap to wash my face and than throw cetaphil lotion on afterwards it works great. I hope I was of help to anyone wondering what products they should use with accutane.

Pros:

-Got rid of acne in about 3-4 months
-Oli free skin
-Your skin becomes extremely soft
-Redness is gone
-Small scars disappear
-Your self-esteem level sky rockets (Trust me!)
-Girls barely have to wear make-up

Cons:

-The beginning months suck
-Bad breakouts within 2-3 months of the treatment
-Backaches/headaches
-Extremely dry skin in the first months
-Dry lips
-Takes a while to start
-Long process to get the medicine

I stopped my accutane treatment 3 months ago. My face has been clear except for a few tiny zits which I treat with Clindamycin. The first few months was slow, but I was excited to finally be on my way to having clear skin. I had backaches for about 4 months, and my headaches weren't so bad. The hardest problem I faced (pun!) was trying to give my face some moisture. Up until the 3rd month my face would peel if I didn't drench my face with moisturizer (I used Cetaphil CREAM which was godsend) Also, try not to pop your zits because the skin around your skin will be VERY flakey! My lips were bothersome too, they would peel around my lip which was very embarrassing. The way I controlled that was applying a lot of Vaseline during the day and putting it all over my lips at night. Other than that, I just met with my dermatologist monthly, and I took my Accutane religiously. I recommend you set an alarm for the day & nighttime so you never forget! Best of luck.

Pros:

EVERYTHING
clears acne up. its amazing!! highly recommended!

Cons:

dry skin all over body
got eczema on arms for 1st time ever
got very dry scalp
dry lips
but these are all easy things to treat!

do it!! i put of taking roaccutane for years as family said it was too strong for my acne. my skin wasn't that bad but it effected me and my confidence and it was constant. i always had stubborn spots that wouldn't go. true a few things worked liked laser treatment, proactiv, pills and potions form the doctor but the spots always came back or it wouldn't clear completely. so after 12 years of spots, turning 26 years old and seeing my friends skin clear up amazingly on roaccutane i decided to go for it and im soooo glad i did. sure dry skin, eczema and dandruff is annoying but not as annoying as feeling so self conscious about ur face and worrying about ur make-up all the time. the side effects are easy to treat. use a good moisturiser like 3 times a day. i also used jojoba oil at night. look after yourself. i cut out drinking for the 4 months and started a diet and exercising. use a anti dandruff shampoo, moisturiser ur whole body every morning and have a lip balm on you at all times. it took like 3 months to see any difference but i have now finished my 4 months and my skin is clear. this really is a miracle drug. sure some people get worse side effects but thats the gamble with any drug u take and 99% of people will be fine. so take it, get clear skin and get your life back! im so happy i took it!

Pros:

Significantly reduces acne/outbreaks..95% reduction for me..facial/ back/ chest acne

Cons:

Reported:
VERY dry skin
Joint pains, etc..

Took the drug in late 1982 to early 1983...drug just came out of trials...so I was basically still part of that trial I guess you could say. The drug was a miracle cure for my chronic acne..I have had 95% or more reduction on my acne since taking Accutane. In just last 2 years have developed some minor acne on my face again in the nose area and chin....have tried max clarity recently and got great results. As for Accutane, I would not hesitate to recommend the drug to those who have severe cases of acne like myself. Reports of depression and bowel disorders with the drug...I can only report that I may have what is commonly referred to as irritable bowel disease....nothing that can't be managed. Definitely only take accutane under a doctors care and review. Again, for those with severe or chronic acne only.

Pros:

-clear back and chest
-clearer(erererer) face
-confidence

Cons:

Dryness and headaches. Then egsma and other rashes (one in an unpleasant place). Use liberal amounts of Burts Bees on the lips - i went through five containers a month. Use Eucerin Calming Creame for your body parts.

I suffered from prolonged acne all over my body. I had been on stuff for four years with nothing working. I took accutane reluctantly since I had no other option. It has paid off. There is no better feeling then your best friend looking at you, smiling and saying, "I cannot believe how much better your face looks." Or for the first time in my life, I took off my shirt in public without fear. This is no miracle remedy. I am not 100% clear but I would take it again. I survived and I feel better about me. I was on accutane for six months (80 mg). Take the chance for yourself.

Pros:

Uhmm, cures acne for 90% of people? If you have a reason to whine about it then just give up on clearing acne, its a miracle drug. I'm on my 3rd month and my skin looks perfect. I get dry lips but if you use a chapstick you shouldnt need to whine!

Cons:

NOTHING, its perfect!

Dont listen to uneducated people, you get a blood test after a month of using it, if it comes out okay then YOU'RE FINE. Dont be a frikken hypochondriac, i was really scared because i was on the internet and found a bunch of bad opinions of it, if you're gonna be afraid and whine about taking it, dont take it and give up on life, because sometimes to get what you want you have to take risks. It has worked perfect for me so far, no noticeable side effects people could point out, it just makes my skin really sensitive to acne products, you have to find a really gentle yet effective face regimen. I'm not saying it will work perfect for everyone but if it does, your life will change!

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
