Acne.org’s Real World Take
The nuclear option. It works reliably and provides long-term remission of acne, and even severe acne, in about ⅔ of people who properly take an adequate dosage. However, it permanently and irreversibly changes the skin and the body forever and users may experience long-term side effects for the rest of their lives. It’ll nuke it, but there is no going back.

Pros:

I think we all have the same story on acne but mine is alittle different. I have mild acne when i was 20 (everybody called me Pizza Face) i tried almost every damn products on the store shelter then one time i picked up a product called Loma Lux AcnePill (homeopathic medicine). I took 3 pills/day according to my weight, dont get me wrong it works like a cham. i could see the result the next day,no lie. My face was so pretty and glow like i never had acne b4 and it getting better better day by day and last for a month.( happiest month in my life).Second came when its side effect are taken over, oil comes out like crazy, then cysts,whitehead,blackhead..i looke like a monster.I quit my job, stay in the house 24/7 cuz i dont wanna to see nobody and dont want nobody to see me i felt like i live in the prison or something 2years pased and decided to go to derm and he prescribed me accutaune, yay. Anyways today is my 24th day on Sotret i feel like i just won 10 mil$ cuz my face looking good

Pros:

Very Effective, cleared skin and back in 2 weeks. Easy just take with food, combats resistant acne, unlike antibiotics no tolerance is built up

Cons:

Plenty, but, not all are expreienced. I experience dry skin and lips, however, both are taken care of by moisturizer and lip chap. Expensive! And, must avoid alcoholic beverages.

After trying OTC acne treaments, many kinds, Retin-A, Clindamycin, and Differin XP (adapalene), eventually minocin (antibiotic) and then to breakout with acne on the back, it is necessary to turn to Accutane.

Pros:

My skin has become smoother and I have diffently seen a massive improvement already! I have been on it for 2 weeks.

Cons:

Dry lips, very sore cracked skin on the side of my lips that bleed! Dryer than normal scalp.
Having to stop trying for a baby.
It took me serveal years to get my Dermatoogist to put me back on it, which caused years of frustration!

This is the second time I have been on Roaccutane so I know its not a miracle cure and that chances are my acne will come back. But for now I am happy with the results.

Pros:

(Suppose to) clear my acne forever!

Cons:

Drowsiness and makes me feel a little "buzzed"

I've been on the generic form of claravis 40 mgs a day for about 5 days. My skin just started to slightly get dried out (peeling). Most of the deep cysts on my face have seem to flatten and dry patches have appeared over them. I am very optimistic that this drug is going to work and I will update you as I progress! I've had a couple of my friends that went on this and their faces are as clear and smooth as a baby's bottom!

Pros:

clears skin forever

Cons:

dry lips, dry skin, temporary hair thinning, red face and ears,

this wus the best choice in my life it cleared my skin so well the side affects sucked but they go away soon after your done taking the pill you want to take it for 6 months because that gives you the highest chance of your acne not coming back the red face sucks but its only for 6 months and then you get the rest of your life with clear clear skin so definitely try it i did and i cant be happery. ps try ddf oil free morning dew to help with the redness it about 35 bucks

Pros:

Cleared up serious acne by about 90%.

Cons:

Serious side effects. While I was on it, I had dry skin and lips. I suffered hearing loss while on it (and never recovered).

I don't know if the hearing loss was worth it but it did give me substantial relief from my acne.

Pros:

Clearer skin

Cons:

Gets worse before it got better

I had moderate acne on the verge of becoming severe. I am on my 4th month of accutane and it looks a lot better then it was. Its also much easier to manage. I still have 2 months to go. I have to say i went through Hell the second and third month. Im sure it is different for everybody but i honesly wouldnt leave the house. I still recommend it though b/c it does get better. I was wondering if anyone has been on a second round of it and could tell me if it was as bad as the first for them.??

Pros:

cleared up my skin more than any other medicine, but broke out after stopped.

Cons:

Blood tests every month. chapped lips, dry skin, headaches.

My two brothers and I both have acne. He has ache on the surface and I have acne deep in my skin and continues on the surface. It worked for my brothers but not entirely for me. It cleared up my skin while I was on it, and now I have been off of it for over a couple years and I have pretty bad acne again. I was on accutane for over a year. I received headaches, chapped lips, and dry skin. I have tried everything, and accutane worked out the best, but I cant be on it for more than a year. Most people go for about 6 months. I am trying other medicines at the moment.

Pros:

I had really terribly cystic acne everywhere on my face. Accutane totally cleared up my acne - perfect skin afterwards - no major side effects to speak off.

Cons:

Slightly dry lips - nothing to complain about. Abotu 6 months after I stopped using Accutane, my acne came right back just as bad as before.

Good to try as a last resort - maybe the effects wil llast for you!

Pros:

its only been two weeks, im not breaking out on my chest and back as much, but my face has gotten a little worse. so far no serious side effects.

Cons:

extremely dry lips, and im breaking out a little more. and since i dont have full prescription coverage it costs me $430. And i really enjoy going out and drinking, and it kinda sucks that i cant do that either :(

i hope it works, ill repost and let you know how it gos. as is i have spent a small fortune on my skin to begin with. so if it works its worth it.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
