Acne.org’s Real World Take
At prescription strengths (15 - 20%) studies show it should help reduce mild-to-moderate acne by a significant and noticeable amount after 3 months or so of treatment, so that’s not too shabby. However, it is unlikely to completely clear the skin on its own.

Pros:

Finacea gel is a miracle so far! Have used it for 3 weeks now and have not had a major breakout since. Red spots are also fading quickly!

Cons:

None really, just a little bit of tingling after application. Not bothersome at all.

This product is absolutley wonderful! I am 29, and I just went to the Dermatologist for the first time 3 weeks ago for mild acne and redness/scarring from previous acne. She prescribed Finacea gel on affected areas at night, and Duac gel for spot control in the morning. I have tried a lot of OTC products for acne and none have worked as well as Finacea. I am so glad I went and got something that worked! I am looking forward to having a beautiful complexion once again, like I had back in college!

Pros:

i've used it for 2 years & it has kept my acne away. i've suffered w/ acne since my teens & into my 20's. my dermatologist recommended i use the azelex w/ nicosyn (another topical acne cream) & they work well w/ my skin. forget retin-A or differin

Cons:

none. when i first tried it, i didn't have any irritation. just the fact that my pimples dried up & shrunk. i saw a big difference in two weeks and the patches of redness went away.

i've tried everything from retin-A, drug store brands, department store products to proactive. azelex and nicosyn really work. i guess i finally met the right dermatologist who actually listened & suggested the right treatment. i ran out of my medication & actually my skin is doing well on it's own, now. funny to say, but...it's been 4 years i haven't used it. i am now 29 & i guess i grew out of the acne stage. i just wanted to comment on how these products worked so well for me that now i don't need it anymore. only thing i wish is i had found the products when i was in high school when my acne was at it's worse. red and painful. i trully recommend these treatments because it's gentle and it works.

Pros:

I saw a difference after one day of using it.
My old scars seemed lighter and more even. Acne dries up without drying out your face. I thought it wasn't working at first because my face wasn't dry. Only cost me $10 with insurance.

Cons:

none

everyone is different, but it works great for me.

Pros:

Clears skin nicely (I have cystic acne), evens out skin tone

Cons:

Slight burning/itching for a few minutes after application.

Great product, works very well. It's not available 'pre-made' in Canada yet, so you have to find a pharmacist who makes "Magistrale" or "Compounds".

Pros:

I love it! I went to work right away without any itching, peeling, or redness. I works wonderfully under moisturizer and/or make-up and it also gives skin a smooth and clear appearance. I also love it because it's non-drying, stainless, and odorless.

Cons:

My only issue was a very mild tingling at application for the first week or so. Other than that, nothing.

This works the fastest, and gives the least amount of side offects than anything i've tried in the past. Definitily recommended.

Pros:

Has cleared up clogged pores and reduced the life of cystic bumps. My skins hasn't peel or become red. Towels & bed sheets are bleached. I can use make up without issues (after the burning/itching stops).

Cons:

It itches and burns for 10-15 minutes everytime I apply. It's a bit expensive with my insurance - $50 a tube - which lasts about 3 months. Boyfriend can't kiss me anywhere on my face after I apply.

I love this product simply because it doesn't stain my towels or bed sheets. It has cleared up my acne and reduced clogged pores. I don't break out as often. When I do get a pimple/cystic bump, it leaves a much lighter mark on my face. I've been using for about 8 months. It still burns and itches, but worth the price for clearer skin.

Pros:

it works! No dry skin, as with many other acne treatments; can be used during pregnancy; saw first results in a week, although doctor told me that it should take 8 week. I had sever cystic acnes and azelex helped anyway!

Cons:

I don't see anything that outweights the major results that I have got. I didn't even have any burning and itching that doctor warned me about.

I love it! Life saver!

Pros:

Excellent cream that works very quickly even if used once a day. Used this cream before I got pregnant and my acne went by 90%. Stopped throughout pregnancy and now back on and its working its magic again. Still have minor small whiteheads.

Cons:

Itches & burns like crazy for upto 30 minutes after application. Use a desktop fan to cool your face whilst the itching is happening!

Great cream that does work in quite a quick time. My acne is moderate and its really helping. But I will say I can understand if people would not use it because the itching is awful, in fact I have to stand outside in cool air cos its agony! Luckily its not for long and the benefits of this cream outweigh a few minutes of itching.

Finding a Doctor

The right dermatologist can make a big difference to your patient experience and the success of your acne treatment plan. Here are the steps to find a dermatologist who is a good fit:

  1. Use the search feature on the American Academy of Dermatology website to look for board-certified dermatologists in your area, and filter the search results for doctors with a special interest in treating acne.
  2. Read online patient reviews of any dermatologists you are considering and ask people you know whether they have any experience with these dermatologists.
  3. Do your research and go to your first appointment with questions prepared.
  4. Listen to what your gut feeling tells you once you see a dermatologist in person. If you are not completely comfortable, try a different dermatologist.

Finding a Doctor

Only a select few plastic surgeons specialize in acne scar revision surgery. Be certain to find a provider who specializes in acne scar repair and who is passionate and experienced in this area.

Be sure to:

  • Look at before and after photos, the more the better, especially patients with similar scarring to your own.
  • Be realistic about results. Look for improvement, not a cure.

Questions to ask a potential scar revision specialist:

  • Are you board certified? Be certain that they are board certified.
  • How long have you been performing these procedures? Normally, the more experience the better, however, some younger surgeons may be more on top of the latest procedures.
  • Can I speak to some of your other patients? Ask for references for several patients who had similar scarring and speak to them about the process and their satisfaction with results.

Red flags:

  • Their story changes: As you discuss different treatment options, if they tend to change their mind easily, or agree with whatever you say, consider this a red flag. A confident, experienced surgeon will possess strong, unwavering opinions.
  • Your gut tells you "no": Trust your gut. If you just don't feel that the doctor is the right fit, trust that and move on. On the other hand, if you feel they are the perfect specialist for you, trust that feeling.
