Gets rid of swelling
When I first got acne and it wasn't as bad, I used this to wash my face with Witch Hazel every morning and night, and it seemed to do the trick. Of course it didn't get rid of my acne, but it definitely slowed things down. I don't use it now, because now my treatment works. (Coffee mask midday, and urine in the morning.) but all i know is that this stuff is GREAT for mosquito bites alongside with rubbing alcohol. Really gets rid of the itch.

Pros:

- Removes excess oil well
- Keeps pores tight

Cons:

- Smell really isn't an issue for me, but...
- Stings on open wounds, since it is an astringent

Witch Hazel is something that I'd suggest to people with light acne. For those like me, especially with severe African American acne, Witch Hazel is not the answer to all your problems. Right now, I use this in conjunction with Tazorac at night, and a Benzoyl Peroxide wash in the morning, then I apply Witch Hazel like a toner with a cotton ball. Tazorotene, which I use as a gel, makes my face very oily and filmy, as I know other products might. And so, I suggest for those with oily faces to put on witch hazel once in the morning, or maybe twice a day. It REALLY helps keep you shine free. However, as a stand alone treatment, unless you get a pimple or two every month or so, don't bet on it changing anything else.

Not for acne
This product is great at temporarily shrinking pores and adding a glow to skin. However based upon the reviews I tried using this to help with my black heads and it didn't really do anything. At first it seemed they were clearing up but it was just an illusion from the pore shrinking quality of the product. I used for 3-4 weeks and my blackheads continued to get worse with new white heads as well. I wouldn't recommend this product for acne but it's a good toner and will make your skin glow.

It might work for you
I have mixed feelings about witch hazel. At first I bought the thayers alcohol free aloe Vera toner and it cleared my mild acne up wonderfully. I kept using it and my skin got super oily (it's already oily enough...) and my breakouts came back worse. So I stopped using it and my skin got less oily and calmed down a bit. I decided to try the dickonsons distilled witch hazel to see if it would work better. It cleared my skin a lot and made my red marks pretty much disappear, but my forehead was still constantly broken out in little pimples. I kept using it for weeks and then I was washing my face in the shower and it felt so...rough... And bumpy. I think it might've been the alcohol. its been a few months since then and I decided to try it again. Same thing happened. I would suggest using this maybe only a few times a week and not religiously like i was. I love the smell of witch hazel and it has great healing properties so just give it a try if you feel like you've done everything. But I have purchased a new thayers product (alcohol free rose scented) and it's working a lot better.

So far so good
I am not 100% convinced as of yet. I am using Benzoyl Peroxcide in the shower and Witch Hazel when I dry my face off after getting out. My face feels amazingly smooth (acne sufferer for almost 8 years). I haven't been so confident in my face as I have the past few days. BUT !!!!! I feel two very uncomfortably sore ingrown pimples just under my nose. With both acne treatments I can't understand why this is happening. But an excellent product for softness so far. ALSO, It has helped me cure a bitch of a cold sore I had on my lip. Great.

Pros:

-tightens pores
-removes residual makeup
-calms down redness
-helps with inflamed acne
-made skin smoother, and less oily

Cons:

-caused blackheads on nose
-very drying because of the alcohol
-made my skin oilier because of the dryness
-smells like a hangover

I used Dickinson's Witch Hazel, but it was very drying since it has alcohol in it. In the summer, it helped remove excess oil and tightened my pores. I loved how refreshing it felt on my skin the first couple of times especially after a nice run, but in the winter, it really dried out my skin and made it oilier, and red. Also noticed blackheads appearing on my nose. Although it did help calm down my inflamed blemishes, it wasn't immediate or noticeable. I would recommend trying Thayer's Witch Hazel as a toner instead since it doesn't have alcohol in it yet still removes dead skin and leftover makeup. I've had more luck with Thayer's instead of drugstore Witch Hazel.

Pros:

Inexpensive
Non-drying
Low alcohol
Cleans skin
Tightens pores
Makes skin look and feel smoother
Helps some with acne

Cons:

Not very effective as an acne treatment
Doesn't help with blackheads
Bad smell
Can cause breakouts

As far as toners go I will probably only use witch hazel because it is natural and it isn't mostly alcohol like most toners are. The smell is bad like everyone says but after a while you can get immune to it. I don't think witch hazel does much to help my breakouts however it does tighten my pores and makes my skin look smoother. Will keep using.

Pros:

Not many for me.

Cons:

It has a horrible oder, didn't work well for me.

I was using the zapzyt acne pack for about 10 months, it really helped my acne go from severe to just the occasional pimples. I decided to add a toner into my regimen and saw that witch hazel was well liked so I tried it. I have only been using it for a week, and hadn't noticed anything until now, I have completely broken out on the right side of my face from my nose down :S They aren't huge nasty pimples but they are there! So I decided to go back to just using my zapzyt acne pack for now, maybe I will try apple cider vinegar next! It may work for others, but it didn't quite work for me, good luck! :)
