Tea tree oil is defined by international standard ISO 4730 (2004) (“Oil of Melaleuca, Terpinen-4-ol type”), which specifies levels of 15 components, which are needed to define the oil as “tea tree oil.”

Among over 98 compounds contained in the oil, terpinen-4-ol is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Pros:

its natural, not as drying as bp

Cons:

smell, messiness, bit expensive, it only works to a certain extent

it did not clear all of my acne, so my face was never fully clear, i personally think bp is better but bp is more drying than this, but i still think everyone should try it, cuz theres no harm in trying it might work better for you than it did for me

Works
I have tried both diluted and 100% tea tree oil on my skin. I have normal, non-sensitive skin. The 15% (I got it from The Body Shop) is not too drying, so I apply multiple times a day. For the 100% however, if I overuse, my skin starts to flake, so I use it for really bad flare-ups like twice a day. Tea Tree Oil personally improves the healing speed for me, but it doesn't work wonders overnight. I think it also depends on the pimple. Some pimples react really quickly; others don't really respond at all. Most of the time, TTO just helps the pimple to heal a bit faster. It works best on random zits, inflamed acne, and cystic acne, I think, but not on whiteheads. It is still a very handy spot treatment, and I personally am not bothered by the smell. I would recommend trying it out.

If your skin starts to flake, it's a sign that you have bacteria build up in your intestinal tract!! I would suggest taking probiotics and putting apple cider vinegar in your water!

Get the proper stuff
I would say the only negative thing about tea tree is how hard it is to get REAL tea tree oil, and how easy it is to use it incorrectly. For one thing, it is not a good idea to apple tea tree oil all over your face, whether it is diluted or not. It is simply too strong for that kind of application. Tea tree oil should be used as a spot treatment on pimples to disinfect them and reduce inflammation. Secondly, real tea tree oil is extracted from the Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and should be the 100% pure Australian oil, preferably organic. Yes, it will be more expensive than you would pay for a watered down version, but wouldn't you rather pay a little more and know you are getting the real thing? Secondly, you should really patch test every spot treatment that you use, and tea tree oil is no different! I recommend starting with a drop of tea tree oil in about a table spoon of water, seeing how your skin reacts over 24 hours, and then proceeding to up the dose one drop at a time if you are not satisfied with the results. Remember that harsh products, undiluted cause irritation, and although that may appear to kill a pimple or two, irritation is aways bad for acne.

Pros:

- antiseptic, antibacterial
- works well on oily skin
- clears up acne overnight
- natural & inexpensive

Cons:

- strong smell
- can sting at first (first time users)
- can be drying (dry/combo skin people beware)

Okay, i have had acne since i was 19, I'm 23 now and also i have reaaally oily skin. I've tried proactiv, neutrogena, oxy10, clearasil, avon, cetaphil, differin, duac, clindamycin, etc etc. After a lot of trial and error, I found a regimen that works for me; it consists of washing my face with a natural aloe vera soap and apply 1 drop of tea tree oil on wet hands and massage gently on entire face, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. It'll sting a little at first but fades fast. Afterwards NO moisturizer! and i know you're gonna think omg this girl is crazy but believe it or not, regardless of what beauty or skin care experts say, really oily skin produces its own moisture so you don't need to add more! This I discovered recently, it's been about a week and my skin fought back the first 3 days but after that, it's clearing up! So be patient :) Oh, at night i wash again with aloe vera soap, use a witch hazel toner with a cotton ball and then apply diluted tea tree oil on the acne spots with a cotton swab. Works wonders overnight! Try it and most importantly, give it time. My acne has gone from moderate to light, so it's definitely worth it :)

Pros:

-reduces redness.
-helps control acne spreading
- the way it rolls on stops bacteria growing
- good when used with Bp
- prefect size for in your makeup bag.
- good to put on throughout the day if you feel a spot coming on.

Cons:

- you have to put it on often
- I dont feel i could just use the tea tree.

The product i bought was a tea tree oil blemish stick. After having a large breakout my mum suggested it. I tried it to good sucess, it helps soothe the acne while reducing it. I found it usefull however i wouldnt just use it on its on.

Stay safe
Tee tree oil is a powerful thing. I use it mixed in with my other acne treatments. I have seen many things online where other people mix it in with masks, when it was not in the directions, and then get a bad reaction to it, claiming it was the mask. But, it was the oil. If you put on too much your face will most likely have a reaction and turn red. Use little at a time, and mix just a little with other treatments. It works to get rid of scars but make sure your skin gets used to it because it is a very powerful oil.

Pros:

quick acting
works even on cystic acne

Cons:

Drying but nothing a little good face lotion didn't fix.

I have suffered from cystic acne for over 15 years. At first my birth control (depo) kept is somewhat in check for a long time. I recently got an IUD and stopped depo and the acne came back with a vengeance. I've tried everything except accutane and I figured I was screwed till I had health insurance for it. Not true. I finally tried this and while I'm still getting small breakouts, it's not the huge boils I usually got.

Pros:

Dries up spots
Evens skin tone
Prevents new spots from popping up

Cons:

Overpowering smell

My skin has been left looking weathered and dry after being on Retin-A, Benzoyl Peroxide and Epiduo over the past 3 years. And I'm only 25! I didn't want to be making the decision between looking like a spotty teenager or older before my time so decided to use some leftover tea tree oil. I've been using Thursday Plantation pure tea tree oil on my face for the past 2 months and my skin has never been clearer. Before rediscovering tea tree oil, I'd have 10 active spots at any one time. I also used to put on make up whenever I have people around, no exceptions, but this week I've been able to go without anything bar moisturiser. It's quite likely my skin has gotten used to harsh treatments but for me, I use the tea tree oil neat all over my face after moisturising. I put 2 drops on my palm and pat one half of my face and repeat on the other side. According to my OH it stinks to high heaven but hey, who cares about a bit of smell if you have clear skin! I'm so pleased with this I've bought another bottle when my old one ran out last week. You can get it for £5 from Sainsbury's or Boots. Same stinky smell, same clear skin :)

Pros:

Feels great
No chemical side effects
Good for your skin
Works on cystic acne

Cons:

Strong smell

I'm 29 years and have chronic, moderate cystic acne along and under my jaw line. I've tried every product and prescription in the world, and nothing is like pure, 100% natural tea tree oil. I pour a small amount into my palms, rub my hands together and then along the affected areas. I can do this several times throughout the day and each time I instantly feel a relief. I began using tea tree oil in this way about 2 weeks ago, and all of the cysts have shrunk in size and most are no longer raised on my skin at all. There is still some redness, but every day it's improved a bit more. This is something NO OTHER MEDICATION has ever been able to do for me! I'm sold.

Pros:

helps clear skin
natural
not too drying
cheap

Cons:

takes a while to kick in & requires regular use
smell can be a bit much

been using this for a few months now and its fairly effective. however the key is CONSISTENCY. I only saw results once I'd been using it twice a day every day religiously for a couple of months. Stopped it for a week and boom, skin went horrible again with cysts etc. Back on it now though and its doing the job, clearing it up. I bought the 100% pure stuff from Boots and dilute it to about 5%, then apply to my face with cotton pads. I don't scrub too hard but you can see the dirt/oil coming off your face on the pad. leaves skin feeling a bit tight but at least you know its working. I had originally bought panoxyl 2.5% BP, I had started with very small amounts but to be honest didn't like the idea of putting something on my face that bleaches clothes! I read about the study that showed TTO had a comparable effect to BP but without the harsh side effects so decided to give it a go. so far i'm fairly pleased. It's not a miracle cure but the best thing I've found so far in terms of an every-day treatment. I would reccommend it, particularly if you're feeling apprehensive about using benzoyl peroxide
